Still Yorkshires best kept secret The Yorkshire Wolds are a range of low rolling hills which rise from the River Humber at Hessle and run in a crescent shape through stunning countryside to the dramatic cliffs at Flamborough Head and Bempton north of Bridlington. The gentle hills make it an ideal area for both walking and cycling. The area is unspoilt and rich in history and there are many historic houses and churches to visit. The chalk grassland of The Yorkshire Wolds is a rare habitat in Britain and is a haven for wildlife.

The Yorkshire Coast towns of Bridlington, Filey, & Scarborough are all less than 20 miles away, each offering a different experience for those of you who enjoy a day out at the Seaside. Do not miss a day out in the maritime town of Whitby, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula and now home to the annual Gothic Weekend.

The North York Moors railway based in the market town of Pickering just 15 miles away is the gateway to The North Yorkshire Moors. It offers 18 miles of steam railway running through spectacular moorland scenery. You can stop off in Goathland also known as Aidensfield in Yorkshire TV's Heartbeat and the bewitching Hogsmead in the first Harry Potter film.

The Historic City of York is just 25 miles from The Old Forge Holiday Cottage. Highlights include the majestic York Minster, The Jorvik Centre, York Castle Museum and The National Railway Museum. You can also explore many of York's hidden secrets which are often tucked away in the cobbled streets, snickets and snickleways.

Relaxing and beautiful stay
Had a lovely 4 day break at the old forge lodge. Very tastefully decorated and equipped with everything you need. The welcome basket with Yorkshire goodies was a lovely touch and Caroline made us feel very welcome . The village is very quiet but very picturesque and a good location for visiting plenty of places of interest. I would definitely recommend this holiday let and hope to return for another visit in the near future.

Perfect Location and Beautiful Home
We spent 2 weeks here with my parents. It's the perfect location to explore North Yorkshire. The setting is incredibly peaceful, surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet it's just a short distance to Yorkshire's attractions and fantastic coastal walks... lovely base to come back to after our day trips out. The house is beautifully comfortable and well-equipped and was absolutely spotless with quality linens and furnishings. There was a very generous welcome basket on our arrival full of locally sourced goodies. There is parking right outside and we loved the underfloor heating and log burning fire. For larger groups there are more rooms available, which meant we could have friends come and stay for the weekend. There's a pub just across the road, serving food and you can find other pubs just a few minutes drive away - some with restaurant quality dining. The hosts were lovely and we would strongly recommend The Forge if you want a nice pace to stay whilst exploring this area, Monthly Food market was brilliant!!

Excellent !
Facilities at Old Forge cottage are first class. We were only able to stay 3 nights but beds very comfortable and 'welcome pack' just what we needed. We enjoyed driving through Hockney Yorkshire countryside and made the most of good access to coast. A lovely stay in clean well-appointed accommodation.

About the host

I live here in the Yorkshire Wolds with my husband Nigel, our 2 teenage sons & our golden retriever Archie.

Why they chose this property

We bought the property in 2001 as our family home. The single storey outbuilding which was once the village Forge initially served as a workshop for my husbands construction business. After several years of making improvements to the main house we turned our attention to the outbuildings, which were in a very bad state of repair. We decided to demolish the building completely & rebuild it using reclaimed materials. The result was The Old Forge holiday cottage. We love living in the Yorkshire Wolds & enjoy welcoming guests & introducing them to this little known area, which many of them describe as a hidden gem. The artist David Hockney continues to paint the unique landscape of The Wolds and we have some prints of his paintings in the cottage.

What makes this property unique

The village is ideally located as a base for visiting the Yorkshire Coast, the market town of Malton, Pickering & The North York Moors & the City of York. There are literally hundreds of attractions to visit locally including many National Trust properties, Homes & Gardens such as Castle Howard, Scampston Estate, & Sledmere House, Museums including Eden Camp, The Yorvik Centre, & The National Railway Museum, & the North York Moors Railway. Children are well catered for, with Playdale Farm, Flamingoland, & the beaches at Scarborough & Bridlington. Malton is also becoming a centre for foodies with an annual Food Festival, several micro breweries & TV Chef James Martin at The Talbot Hotel. There are some very good eating places just a stones throw away from the cottage.
