About this property

Cornish Cottage 100m from dog friendly beach+pub enclosed garden off rd parking

This very well presented, original traditional dog friendly Cornish Cottage is just 100 meters flat strole from Porthallow's quiet beach and local pub (both dog friendly) and a short walk to Fat Apples café. Built in the 1920’s, Volnay has remained in local ownership. Named after the SS Volnay it retains many period features such ship wreck beams narrow doors and is an ideal base either to explore rural Lizard or stay in with your feet up with its unique living rock wall fire place. The cottage also adjoins a rural footpath yards from the front door which explores the local fields and woodlands (ideal for the first quick dog leg stretch in the morning). The very large and sunny organic seaward facing garden and orchard is boarded by gentle flowing streams interspersed with wild flowers, BBQ area and separate fire pit and bee hives. With plenty to explore in the local area for the whole family adventures and life time memories, life can be as busy as you make it. Porthallow has a quiet and sheltered pebble beach with rock pools to explore and magnificent views enjoyable all year round. The beach offers small boats and kayak/canoe launching facilities ideal for fishing and cove exploration. Pothallow is the official South West coastal path half way point and Volnay View is ideally situated for families to enjoy this living heritage. Volnay View has lots of enclosed off road parking (small trailers included) with easy access. There is also ample outside drying space for beach clothing, diving/fishing equipment. Other nearby attractions CADGWITH, COVERACK, and HELFORD
If the weather is good a fishing trip with the owner is must or even a ride in WW2 jeep and may be a historic trip along the coast in the boat to HELFORD or COVERACK for a crab sandwich. Pub drop off/picks can be arranged in the VW bay buttercup. The cottage is great but the adventure is everything.
See you Dreckly!

Lovely cottage ideally located

Porthallow is a lovely village and the cottage is ideally placed in a quiet spot close to the heart of the village. A well equipped kitchen, nice clean and tidy bathroom and comfortable bedrooms. Pete was extremely helpful, and always responded to any messages quickly when you needed any help with anything. The pub, Five Pilchards in the village is definitely worth a visit!!

a lovely location, great for outdoors activities, very friendly hosts

We had a lovey week. The location is fabulous, in Porthallow village 2 min walk from the beach and great for outdoors activities - great walking, kayaking, swimming, snorkelling - all on the doorstep. The cottage is rustic but has all the necessary fixtures and fittings. The village is very friendly and the village pub (Five Pilchards) has good beer and food. Pete and Nicky are incredibly friendly and helpful hosts and cannot do enough for you. We thoroughly recommend it!

Can’t wait for the next visit

What can we say? The cottage is absolutely lovely, small but in no way confining. In fact a bigger cottage would have lost the quaintness of our stay. Having said that, there is plenty of outside room attached to the property which the kids loved. Outside the garden gates is a picture postcard village which really appealed to us. The beach is literally 150 yards away and although it’s a pebble beach, the kids loved going out and exploring Porthallow is brilliantly located for all the attractions of southern Cornwall. On our stay we were able to travel to loads of places really easily, including Newquay, St Ives, Falmouth and Penzance. A visit to the Minack Theatre is a definite must and we were lucky enough to see Sister Act. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Paradise Park and Lands End are all easily accessible. Pete was very helpful and the bottle of wine to greet us was a lovely touch. Communication with Pete was easy and he even popped over from his home to make sure we were okay. We will definitely be returning to stay at the cottage again and have already recommended it to friends and colleagues.

Very enjoyable break

Ideal getaway on the Lizard peninsula. So much to see and do, and locals very friendly. The cottage was very well equipped and a joy using an induction hob. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, throughout. Thanks

The Cottage was lovely however unfortunately there were a few issues.

Pete was very helpful and friendly as were Annie and her husband. Unfortunately the hot water did not work after the first day except for the electric shower. It was sorted and working on our last day. The electric shower which was over a bath under an eave was very uncomfortable as you could not stand upright. We were only a couple however if you were 4 persons there was only one sofa in the lounge which only took 2 or 2.5 persons. There was a huge dining table with 4 huge chairs in the lounge. Another sofa sat in the side annex. Perhaps a reconfiguration might help. The laundry facilities were excellent. The kitchen was well equipped with a great cooker. The cottage is close to a lovely pebble beach. The 5 Pilchards was closed as new owners but apparently will be open in June. Meanwhile the local community have set up the 3 pilchards in the community hall. All very friendly and welcoming. Nice food and company. Nearest other places to eat are Fat Apple cafe up the hill or else a couple of pubs in St. Keverne or Roskillys for snacks and lunch.

The write up and photos clearly show it’s an old and small traditional cottage. Had we been asked we could have moved the second sofa from the next room into the main sitting.

A lovely traditional Cornish cottage.

We had a lovely week in Pete's cottage. It is very dog friendly which is what I was looking for. There is a large enclosed garden for dogs to run in, the beach and cliff top walks are close by. The local pub, The Five Pilchards has a great atmosphere and serves tasty meals. Up the hill The Fat Apples serves delicious salads, home made cakes and traditional breakfasts. Any issues were quickly ironed out by the owner and the caretaker who lives locally.

Heaven on Earth

An amazing little cottage in a beautiful village. Everything you need has been thought about by the owner (thanks Pete) There are loads of fantastic walks around the local area. The pub is friendly. Fat Apples Cafe, a short walk away, does the best full English breakfast and beautiful cakes. The beach is a short walk away (5 minute amble) It is stunning. We will be back very soon

Super cottage in very quiet location

We had a fantastic week in Porthallow. Ideal spot to explore the Lizard Peninsula. The cottage is small, quirky, but very cosy and homely. The bed was really comfy, home from home. The kitchen was well equipped, large dining table, two sofas, and it suited us perfectly (2 adults and 1 dog). The annexe on the side is ideal if you have a dog, straight in onto tiled floor, easy to keep clean. Beach a short stroll away, as is the pub, the Five Pilchards. Highly recommend the food, but to be sure of a table you need to book! Superb dog walking area within a short drive or direct from the cottage. Recommend reading the guide book in the cottage about the Lizard Peninsula, containing about 26 different walks. We did Helford River, The Loe at Helston 3 times, Goonhilly Downs (boggy in places even though we'd had no rain for days), Trelowarren Estate and woods. We would definitely recommend this cottage for people who have dogs, require a quiet retreat away from it all.

A charming little cottage in a peaceful hamlet next to the sea. Clean and well appointed

Volley View is a pretty pink cottage in the quiet hamlet of Porthallow. It was hard to find at first with no map provided or name on the cottage or gate but once found was easy to come and go. The local beach is shingle and mostly used for canoeing and dog walking but is peaceful and only a 3 minute walk from the cottage. A chilled bottle of wine was provided at the start and was certainly appreciated but a bottle of fresh milk and loaf of bread would have been a welcome extra especially since there is no shop in Porthallow. The cottage was clean and well equipped and the tiled entrance hall was a good place for the dogs to stay. The bed was very comfortable and the heating was effective on the chillier evenings. There was no mobile phone signal but the WiFi worked well and was reliable. The bathroom was clean and bright with a bath and shower. There are lovely walks from the cottage up into the woods and along the coast path too. A short distance out of Porthallow is Fat Apples restaurant which serves delicious home cooked meals and cakes. St.Keverne is the nearest town with a good shop and pubs and the local church. It is a 10 minute drive from Porthallow. The Five Pilchards pub is the local pub and is a 3 minute walk from Volnay View. It serves local beers and has a good choice of meals on offer. The cottage has ample parking and a large enclosed garden. The whole area is dog friendly including the pub.

Holiday with our dog

Wonderful property and a lovely introduction from the owner Pete, made us feel very at home and able to relax. Peaceful little village with great pub-definitely recommend the food. Beach is dog friendly and very clean and there are great coastal walks right on the doorstep. 2 woodburners and heaters in the property for those cooler days and the beds and sofas were really comfy. You also have an enclosed smaller garden and a fenced in larger areas so really safe for dogs and children. Everyone in the village was really friendly and welcoming. A great stay !

Charming clean and comfortable

The cottage suited us perfectly. Pete could not have been more accommodating. Great base to visit friends and family in and around the Lizard. The house was beautifully clean, thought and care had been put into the layout and accomodation. We had a really lovely peaceful break in Porthallow. N.B. The Five Pilchards was a real treat!

Homely, quiet, green and warm

The property was great- clean and warm. 2 wood burners and an amazing living jungle wall thing which we loved. Brilliant location in this enchanting Cornwall back water- literally 2 minutes walk to beach & great pub. The owner was very kind and generous, and we greatly appreciate how welcoming he was. Not a bad word to say. Porthallow is wonderful. And the birds, the birds...

A peach of a cottage in a peach of a village

Pete and Nikki and family couldn`t have done more for us to make our holiday the most stress free and enjoyable stay. There was 110% effort from them and their calming nature made it an exeptional time away from home. The cottage was immaculate and the welcome was very warm and friendly. The information Pete gave us came in very useful and there was nothing that was a problem. From John, Jen and Chief, we all thank you
