We aim to please! We always send guests a map with details of the exact location of the cottage ( ford free ) with a warning not to rely on a sat nav for the last few miles as some of these tend to show an alternative route through a ford.
Property is in a lovely location, lots of scenic walks and close to Whitby for a day at the coast. Cottage is well maintained with everything supplied to make it home from home !!
Lovely little cottage. Very clean and tidy. Excellent location. We will definitely be going back.

Excellent location, comfortable and well appointed property.
The owners Pauline and Peter were very helpful and friendly. The location is wonderful with the NYMR heritage line at the end of the front garden with the steam trains running past, fantastic! Close to Pickering and Whitby and also Goathland where the TV series 'Heartbeat' was filmed. We would definitely want to return in the future. Highly recommended location and property.

The location never fails to impress. Many visitors return, some each year, booking again before they leave to guarantee their favourite week.
We had a comfortable stay in this lovely cottage, despite a week of mainly eet weather.
We chose this cottage because it was central to all the places we wished to visit.
It is located a 15 minute walk outside Grosmont, alongside the railway track, and almost as long a journey by car.
We enjoyed the fairly remote location and would certainly consider staying again - preferably at a warmer, drier time of year.

Shame about the weather. The location comes alive when the sun shines. Gardens in bloom, summer evenings in the sun shed, wildlife and many scenic walks from the back door.
Glad you could still enjoy the cottage.
The property, in a row of ex miners cottages, and situation were beyond what we expected. Very easy to explore the York Moors, sites and towns. The hosts were extremely thoughtful and helpful. The steam trains were a joy to watch from the back door and bedroom. We returned home with great memories.

Thanks! I am glad we achieved our aim of providing our guests with a memorable holiday and sharing our special location. This is why we have so many regular visitors.
Definitely a quiet cottage at the bottom of a valley. I loved the drive down every time we did it.
Pre-comms and check in was good, a nice owner couple partly lives next door.
Place was cozy and seemed clean. It is a bit dated and could use a other few minor upgrades (a coffee press, decent knife or two).
All in we enjoyed our stay and the area.

We did warn the guests that there was a problem, with the internet, which we could not fix in time. The TV had been dropping the signal from time to time for short periods depending on the weather. The mast has been moved which interrupts the signal in the valley in inclement weather. The TV aerial specialist advised us to buy a different free sat box which would fix the issue. He installed the new box and tested the signal at the time, 28/9/22. We will call him again. We did leave some DVDs in the cottage in case the signal dropped for a while and we had an extensive collection n our house next door but the guests did not mention they had a problem. BT were notified about the internet and are trying to fix the problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience
Coments left in our guest book were positive.
We had a very comfortable week in Pauline’s cottage, which was cleaned to a very high Covid standard. Very relaxing time in this traditional cottage with all the essentials for a great holiday. Pauline and Peter were very friendly and welcoming, we had great walks, some from right outside the door.
The coast is easily accessible but we stayed local , there is a pub in Grosmont which serves food, only a 20 minute walk away and numerous others in Egton if you use the car.
Certainly on our list to visit again in the future.

We aim to please and provide a great holiday experience.
We had an absolutely magical time we arrived in darkness so was truly amazed in the morning to see the views around us.
We had a lovely cozy stay in a well prepared house, there wasn’t anything missing we wished we had. I was slightly worried being in a different kitchen and environment for Christmas I was a bit concerned about but we were fine and we loved every minute.
When the weather was nice the walks were great and we had the treat of seeing the last Christmas trains literally outside the front my children thought it was amazing.
We had a lovely, cozy and quiet place which felt home from home and we loved it so much we will be booking again.

Lovely place to stay for visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and great views of the Line.
Nice walks directly from the cottage using the information provided by the owners.
A lovely little house in a quiet and peaceful location
My wife and I spent a week in Mallard Cottage at the end of November 2021. What a charming place to be. The kitchen is spacious, with everything you could ever need in.
The living room is smaller, but still a lovely room to spend time in. The large window looks out onto the small front garden, fields, hedgerows, and the railway line. It's akin to a widescreen for birdwatchers, which my wife and I definitely are. I've never seen quite so many different species while having my breakfast.
There are two bedrooms, one with a four poster double bed, and one with bunk beds. Obviously we had no need to try these out, but we found the double to be really comfortable.
The decor and furniture in Mallard Cottage perfectly suit the style of the building and location. There is solid wood throughout, which leads to a homely feel and relaxing atmosphere.
The house is also a lot warmer than we thought it would be. This is probably as much to do with how thick the walls are and how well the modern windows fit. It's also part of a terrace, which also helps. Therefore the heaters don't have to be on that much to keep the house toasty warm. I should point out at this point that the beautifully tiled bathroom doesn't have heating, but the airing cupboard is in there. This generates the hottest water I've ever encountered. You could probably make tea with it....
Mallard Cottage is located in the Esk Valley, which also happens to be most of the address. It is remote and exceptionally peaceful there. Therefore it takes some getting to. There are steep valleys either side, then roughly a mile of single track road. I've been driving for 25 years, and drive many different vehicles as part of my job. I pretty much had to recalibrate my driving style while we were there.
Any bad points? None worthy of mention really , although the stairs are similar to the landscape, steep and twisty. We always found them somewhat of a challenge.
Pauline and Peter, who own the house, are probably the nicest people you're likely to meet. Pauline sent us concise and accurate directions and a map, although due to time constraints, we had to find it in the dark. It was more than worth it when we eventually did..
In summary Mallard Cottage is a beautiful house, owned by two lovely people, in an incredibly scenic location..
If you happen to live in a town that's never completely quiet, as we do, even during the night, then there's no better place to get away from it all.
Lovely cottage beautiful surroundings lovely walks nearby. Lots of wildlife don't need a TV. Very dark at night perfect for star gazing. Would definitely return.
This cottage was perfect for our needs. It had a fantastic surroundings and the cottage contains all we needed. The steam train going past was great fun to wave at. The owners were very welcoming even though we were a bit early in arriving. The access road is very steep and we were lucky not to have met a vehicle coming the other way. We would certainly return again.
Lovely, clean and cosy cottage in the most peaceful location we've ever stayed in - and we've stayed in some VERY quiet places. No through traffic, no shop, no pub, no amusements... it's perfect (if this is what you're after). Great walks around the area and Whitby is less than 10 miles away if you want sea and a few more amenities. Would definitely recommend.

About the host
Hosted by Pauline Robinson
Peter and Pauline Robinson. Very friendly people who take pride in our holiday cottage. We are there at weekends to make sure everything is up to standard. 60% of our bookings are people who return often.
Why they chose this property
We bought our other cottage, next door, in 1982 as we love the location. My husband is a steam train enthusiast and I love the large garden and open views of the countryside. It is an idyllic location peaceful and relaxing with no passing traffic. It is an ideal base for touring the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and close to the heritage coast.
What makes this property unique
Walks from the back door. Views of the steam trains powering up the line. A variety of birds feeding on the table in the garden. Very pleasant large garden surrounded by open 'heartbeat' countryside.
