Watauga River Cabins- Cedar Cabin
rustic lodge located on the Watauga River.
The featured property was completed October of 2015. The 3,000-square-foot upscale rustic lodge located at the headwaters of the trophy trout section of the beautiful Watauga River.
Built primarily with reclaimed wood from local tobacco barns, this one-of-a-kind lodge is filled with character and craftsmanship. From the handcrafted barn wood kitchen cabinets and tobacco wood flooring to the rustic siding, metal ceilings, and unique details such as a whiskey barrel repurposed as a sink base, every feature was thoughtfully chosen to give the lodge the charm and appearance of a home that has stood along the river for generations.
Although completed in 2015, the lodge feels as though it has been part of the landscape for a hundred years. Rustic character is beautifully combined with modern comfort, including updated appliances and a fully equipped kitchen. Handmade barn wood cabinetry and granite countertops create a warm and inviting space for preparing meals, gathering with family, and making memories together.
Relax on the Back Deck
One of our guests' favorite places is the large covered back deck overlooking the Watauga River. It is the perfect setting to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and watch the river flow by—you may even see someone land a trout!
The deck features a beautiful stone wood-burning fireplace, an outdoor kitchen area, comfortable teak furniture, and rocking chairs. Whether you are enjoying your morning coffee, gathering around the fireplace in the evening, or simply listening to the sounds of the river, this peaceful outdoor space is designed for relaxation.
This section of the Watauga River is truly a fisherman's paradise. From the covered porch, you can walk directly down to the wadable river for world-class trout fishing, kayaking, wildlife watching, or simply spending a quiet afternoon by the water.
Peaceful Setting, Convenient Location
The lodge is located along a quiet country road, giving you the feeling of being tucked away in the mountains while still being conveniently close to everything you may need. Just four miles down the road, you will find shopping, groceries, restaurants, and other conveniences.
The lodge is fully furnished and equipped with linens, kitchen necessities, and household essentials. All you need to bring are your personal belongings, food, and plans for a relaxing getaway.
We dreamed about and planned this lodge for many years, and it is very special to us. We hope you will enjoy its beauty, character, and peaceful riverfront setting as much as we do.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Watauga River!

This was a great place to get away from the city lights and have a nice country feel on the river! The property was clean and well accessorized. Easy to settle in and relax while have reasonable access to surrounding towns.
The view was amazing. The entire house and property were very thoughtfully put together. We enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to go back when it’s warm enough to get in the creek.

Beautiful cabin and had everything we needed! We didn’t realize the basement bedroom and kitchen had a separate entrance but it worked great for our family of adults!

About the host
Hosted by Patty Whidden
I owned a retirement mobile home park for 38 years. My wife is a retired Biology teacher. We were both born and raised in Frostproof, FL.
Why they chose this property
From Gary: The river property came into my mother’s family in the 1890’s. My great grandfather built the family homestead. In 1901 (pre-dam) a flood came and damaged the home. With mules and logs they moved the 3,000 square foot, 2 story home across the creek and placed it on higher ground. Before the dam was built in the mid 1940’s, the river would sometimes look like a creek, at other times it would rise and come out its 50 foot banks. In the winter, the river would freeze and my great grandparents would cut squares of ice from the river and bury it in their home for later use. Before the bridge, there was a natural shelf that allowed the horse and buggies to cross the river in front of the cabins.
The ground was farmed until I received it in 2003. My mother was raised on the property, until she married my father in 1947 and moved to Florida. We vacationed here every year, so I have always loved this place. I wanted a place of my own but hated the idea of having it sit empty most of the time. I am in the rental business in Florida so I decided to build something that could be rented when we are not able to be here. At that time, there were no buildings on the property so I was able to start from scratch. I really like the character of horse barns and thought, why not build one that could house people. So, in 2004, we built the cabins and it has been a great adventure! In October of 2015, we completed our retirement cabin. The cabin is 3,000 sq. ft and has three bedrooms, three baths, and a full apartment suite on the lower level.
We hope you choose us for your lodging in East Tennessee. We know you will enjoy it.
