About this property

Exquisite Accommodations Farmhouse with over 100 acres

This exquisite 1860 renovated farm house (private) situated on over 100 acres of ecologically diverse land (trails throughout) is ideal for "retreat" or family/friends time together. Please check the reviews - we do all that we can for guests to have an amazing experience!

It is close to attractions in nearby villages & cities (just over an hr East of Toronto, 3 hrs west of Ottawa). This is a magnificent space to rent for short or extended periods of time for individuals, families, colleagues or small groups seeking time in a private fully amenities house and/or in nature. Whether walking or snow shoeing on the trails or sitting by the fire this is a tranquil space enabling one to choose rest, play, the creative arts to stimulate imagination or a mix of all. As of Dec 2022 we also have pairs of new skin skis from Finland for guests' use. Theses are ergonomically easier to use than cross country skis through forests.

The 6 bedroom farm house includes a full amenities kitchen with a spectacular masonry (fast wood burning unit). The dining and living area has a wood stove and fully operational fire place. New baseboard heating has been put in the bedrooms to ensure people are warm on the very cold nights. There are six bedrooms; one with a queen bed, two with double beds, one with a single and double bed, and two bedrooms with two twin beds in each (9 beds in total in the farm house). There are two full amenities bathrooms. The outdoor patio has a table, chairs and BBQ. There is ample room to park vehicles. One can store bicycles in the workshop barn.

In the heart of Northumberland Hills this property, Fells Meadows, is a space focused on regeneration and well being. About 1/2 a km from the farm house is a 30 foot diameter yurt perfect for circles, yoga, tai chi and the arts. There is a separate charge for the yurt and you must enquire to book the yurt (if it is available).

There are two cabins, a bunkie and a safari wall tent open from spring - fall which can be added to the booking if desired (they are not in the regular booking.) The cabin, “Haven on the Hill-top” overlooks many miles of nature without a building in site! Also on this hill overlooking the valley is a stone labyrinth based on the one in Chartes, France. There are trails throughout over 100 acres of meadow, forest and protected water ways perfect for walking all seasons and during our winter wonderland, for snow shoeing or cross country skiing. Rates for cabins and yurt are additional. You are welcome to book these if they are available. If you wish to book the property exclusively you must be in touch with Fells Meadows to arrange this. Otherwise from later spring until the fall we do enable others to book the cabins if the booking for the farmhouse has not been noted as being exclusive.

"Haven on the Hill-top" has a double mattress in the loft and is a short walk up the first hill, appox 10 min walk from the farm house. It has a heat unit for chillier nights. The other cabin, Haven in the Meadow is located near the yurt. It has a queen mattress in the loft and a high quality double sofa bed on the main level. Haven in the Meadow has propane heat unit for cooler nights. All buildings are professionally cleaned. As noted, there is a supplemental fee if you wish to book the cabins.

For those wanting to be right on the water with a "cottage' then this is not the option. However there are incredible beaches about 20 mins from the location and many other areas of interest. We have lots of info to give to you about the beaches and other attractions. For the adventurous and ones who still wish to be “on the go” besides the property trails we are in the heart of Northumberland County and near the Kawartha Lakes. There is a plethora of opportunities such as theatre, festivals, cafés & restaurants in near by villages and cities. During your stay you may wish to take advantage of the magnificent near by sites or shopping ventures to quaint near by villages. Only 10 minutes to Colborne, 15 minutes from the arts village of Warkworth, 20 minutes from Cobourg (west) or Brighton (east). Extensive trails along the waterfront are just south or the oak ridges moraine trails are just minutes away. Some of Ontario’s most beautiful beaches are within a 20 minute car ride. Day-excursions by auto or cycle are Pres’quile Provincial Park at Brighton, ON and the Sandbanks Provincial Park in neighbouring Prince Edward County. Spa experiences can be found in Cobourg (Fieldstone Spa), Brighton and at St. Ann’s Spa in Grafton. For those who’d like to venture out for dining experiences there are numerous nearby reputable options. Batata Ski Hill is within 30 minutes for down hill skiing. For those wishing to spend time in nearby cities there is Toronto (75 mins), Kingston (90 mins) and Peterborough (50 mins). The via train in Cobourg has express routes west to Toronto or east to Kinston, Ottawa and Montreal.

Each spring we plant organic gardens and native vegetation which we offer for sale to guests. These also support soul-stirring personal retreats and also fortify wildlife such as the butterflies, bees and bluebirds. Creating an area of nature, a tree house and fairy gardens that involve children and kindles their imagination is envisioned. We are keen to meet people who also care about making a difference and envision living and leaving a legacy which supports future generations. We hope you’ll be able to take advantage of experiencing the magic of this property.

On the property there are additional opportunities of guided trail or labyrinth walks, mentoring sessions, facilitation in “the work” of Byron Katie ( with the host, Leslie. Details for spa services in nearby villages are available when requested. We are a smoke free property. If you have a pet you'd like to bring please inquire as we do make exceptions ( must be well trained, not on the furniture, friendly with people and other animals. There is a supplemental pet cleaning fee. This is a place where you may want to "celebrate'" a special occasion such as Birthday, anniversary, etc. It is not a place conducive to "partying". Typically there is a 2 night minimum but over holidays and long weekends we prefer a 3 night minimum booking (mandatory 3 night booking over winter holidays of Christmas, Hannukkuh & New Years). It may be that one or two of the cabins on the property are booked. If you prefer the property exclusively you must enquire. Please feel free to be in touch if you have questions or require additional information.

My best vacation rental experience ever
This was an incredible experience from beginning to end and I can’t recommend it enough. Our host, Leslie, was an absolute dream to deal with. She was quick to answer any and all questions and provided lots of information that helped us to plan our stay. She was easy to communicate with and very responsive when we needed to reach out while on the property. The farmhouse is extremely well maintained and super comfortable. It was so well-equipped it took us by surprise. The amount of cookware and serving dishes was incredible, especially for a large group like ours. Everything you could possibly need is there. At one point someone said “I wonder if there’s a garlic press?” And sure enough, we opened a drawer and found one! The rest of the house was much of the same, soaps, shampoos, towels, blankets, an enormous library of books... literally everything that made it feel like home. Apart from the cozy farmhouse, the grounds were the most impressive. The vegetable and herb garden was a beautiful view as we stepped out the door each day, and the kids enjoyed picking fresh herbs for our meals. We loved exploring the well-manicured, weaving paths that took us from the house to the fields (where our dog loved leaping through the tall grasses), through the woods, up to the meditation labyrinth (amazing view), and to the yurt. Every acre felt like a new spiritual experience, and every installation was charged with thought, care and reverence. We even felt so safely held in the yurt that we held a few impromptu yoga and stretching sessions. It was a perfect place to not only reconnect with our family members, but also to reconnect with ourselves. It’s clearly a very sacred piece of land and you can feel the magic. We all had an amazing, healing and energizing vacation. We have all agreed that we will be back as a family, and I will very likely book it to host a retreat in the near future.

A One of a Kind Property and a Friendly Host make for the Perfect Stay
My friends and I (7 people total) stayed at Leslie's farmhouse for a PEC getaway weekend and I don't know if I have ever had a better experience staying at a rental property. The grounds are extensive and beautiful, the house was plenty large and had everything we needed and everything was very clean and tidy, and there were unique amenities that we all loved on site, such as the garden, the yurt and the campfire. But it is the Host, Leslie, that brings a great experience up to the top-tier of hosting I've experienced. She was so accommodating to our group's requests, answered all of my many questions, and made the entire process run so smoothly. She is a perfect communicator which really made it feel like our stay was perfectly tailored to our group and that no small detail was left out. I was so impressed by both the physical accommodations and the personal engagement that I would absolutely recommend this listing to anyone looking to stay in the area, especially those in a group. Thank you Leslie for hosting us and I hope to return in the future!

Beautiful retreat for family over the holidays.
Owner was very friendly and helpful, property was perfect for a getaway during covid, separate rooms for 4 grandchildren and children and their spouses. Kitchen was very well stocked for all our baking and cooking over the holidays and the property has great trails for dogs and kids. Great for ages 8 - 70!!

Outstanding
Fells Meadows is a very special place. Our family spent a weekend there. It was a home away from home. Leslie is a wonderful host. If you are considering this space, book it. You will not be disappointed.

I grew up in Toronto but always loved being in nature. This drew me to purchasing land where I could create a sanctuary space supporting protection of the land and enabling others to also have a place to be in retreat. The property is close enough to the city for me to still travel back and forth. I now primarily live in a house next to this property.

Why they chose this property

I've always loved the rolling hills in Northumberland County just east of Toronto. I chose the property because it has 8 different ecosystems which is great for "permaculture". The area is known for "the arts". The previous owners ensured chemicals were not used which I appreciated as I'd like to have a small organic vegetable and fruit garden and gradually also grow herbs and flowers. It's close enough for me to still get back and forth to Toronto when I need to and is close to such a mix of activities. I love the wild life in the area. Being able to protect it and open it for others to enjoy is a gift.

What makes this property unique

The South East view from the first hill was what called me to this property. One can look out over hundreds of miles of all nature - not a building in site! There's such a variety of birds and wildlife on the property which I appreciate. The mix of forest, meadows and rolling hills is a joy to walk.
It only takes 20 mins to get to the smaller cities of Cobourg and Brighton, 10 mins to Colborne, just over an hour to Toronto and just a km to the little General store in the village of Castleton!
