When you choose to come and stay at Cilwendeg Lodge, you will buy into a piece of history going back to the early 1800’s. This beautiful Grade II listed gate house is part of the 350-acre estate of Cilwendeg, where the owners also live. The owners, whose family have been on the estate for over a 100 years, have so carefully renovated the gate house to turn it into wonderful holiday accommodation set in a large garden with a private hot tub. All on the ground floor, there is a large living room with wood burner, leading through to a lovely kitchen/dining room with a huge feature inglenook fireplace. There is a bathroom with a shower over bath, a bedroom with a kingsize bed and a further bedroom with twin beds on the first floor.
Going back to the late 18th century, an enormously wealthy lighthouse builder built the Cilwendeg estate which includes a huge mansion house, now privately owned, and he also restored the long neglected medieval chapel. His nephew inherited the estate and built the most remarkable garden building in Wales, The Shell House, in his uncle’s honour. You will be amazed by this extraordinary Gothic sight in a woodland retreat, the walls are a profusion of seashells and coloured glass fragments! The Shell House and chapel are open to visitors on a Thursday from April to September. There are footpaths through the estate, which still has a working farm, and at the end of a lovely walk they will bring you out at the nearby pub in Newchapel – perfect!
The name of the village of Boncath, where you will find the village shop, comes from the Welsh name for buzzard, and you will see plenty around, along with red kites and lots of other wildlife. But you also have so much more on your doorstep here, and you won’t be short of things to see and do if you can drag yourself away from beautiful Cilwendeg Lodge. The wonderful Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coastline is less than 10 miles away and once here you have a choice of epic beaches and shores to go and explore, along with hundreds of miles of the famous outstanding coastal path. 2018 is the Year of the Sea in Wales, so it is fitting to discover so many of the wonderful coastal towns and villages in the region. Visit nearby Cilgerran Castle and also Cardigan Castle and enjoy the many restaurants and cafés the town has including a pizza tipi in the summer! Outdoor pursuits such as golf, pony trekking and fly fishing are all available. Beach 10 miles. Shop ½ mile, pub serving food 1¼ miles.
