About this property

Woodstock Paradise with Gardens & Private Heated Pool

COME VISIT OUR COZY ART-FILLED HOME. LOVELY PRIVATE POOL IN 1-ACRE GARDEN (SUMMER).

Our charming, cozy and comfortable house is perfect for couples, singles, or couples plus 1. We are located inside the village of Woodstock, a 10-minute walk to the Village Green (or 2 min drive). In season, heated swimming pool surrounded by forest and gardens open for summer guests (heating optional). Our indoor space is a cottage-like private home with skylights, nestled among the tranquil forest and really close to the quaint but lively village of Woodstock-- and yet our forest location with private drive is super peaceful and quiet.

House and pool are surrounded by gorgeous perennial gardens creating a calm, enchanting environment. Quiet and peaceful, yet close to Woodstock town restaurants and boutiques, our location offers the best of both worlds.

Recommended for a couple sharing the kingsize bed, with additional possibilities of a separate sleep space for one extra person (fees apply).

Enticing decks with seating allows for barbecue or fire-pit gathering year round. Inside, a claw tub in the skylight and bay-windowed bathroom is perfect for de-stressing with bath salts (no standup shower but shower-head provided for water spray).

A front bay window full of plants faces the front deck.

For colder nights, we have a living room bluestone fireplace (now a smoke free inset with sealed glass door provides lovely wood heat). House has great winter lighting and ample shade in summer.

AC in summer is available (additional fee). Regular oil-furnace heat is also available for winter.

Beautiful screened windows as well as sliding door open out to private forest views.

Cook delicious meals in our simple but fully equipped kitchen with granite counters and Spanish tile floors, or use the barbecue outside. Enjoy nights of stargazing while eating at the outdoor table with chairs and lounges. Or use the fire pit in its garden location.

The 30-foot pool is surrounded by gorgeous gardens, sun umbrellas and chairs for lounging.

You can also take a 5 minute walk down the road to the Woodstock Millstream swim hole.

Consider taking a walk in the woods following the Town of Woodstock paths through the Comeau Property forests along the Millstream. It takes 5 min. to drive to the trailhead.

This is our real weekend home! We are writers and professors who love books, art, writing, and the quiet of our special house. Come enjoy our books, French antiques, and artwork. We love to share it with like-minded people when traveling. Come and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Excellent space for writers and artists seeking a retreat. (If you prefer new and modern things this house may not be for you.)

Musicians can play our lovely piano. Cooks can make magical meals to serve on our antique French table or, in better weather, out on the deck.

Or take a stroll into the heart of the Woodstock village very close by to shop or eat great food. Hear music in local venues for the cost of a drink in places like the Colony in town.

We provide a full House Manual for your stay, and local venue tips. The gardens also have art and mobile sculptures by our renown family artists. (All information in the Manual hardcopy.)

Don't miss this opportunity to relax by the pool, on the decks surrounded by flowers and greenery, with sumptuous views of the forest when our limited open calendar allows. We do think this is a PARADISE. It is especially welcoming to artists, writers, people who enjoy hiking, swimming, and other local sports in the Woodstock area. Or if you just want to hang around and read. Guests who seek a tasteful and artsy non-suburban setting that is amazingly calming and private will love our home. Our guests over the years tell us how peaceful and relaxing our place is.

The master bedroom contains a super-comfortable natural mattress in KING size. Additional twin bed can be provided, perfect for a child or adult friend.

Polished wood floors are laid with authentic Persian carpets (sometimes removed in summer months), Our calm living room opens up to skylights and a bay window. Relaxing chairs and rockers are located multiple parts of the house.

The bathroom is charming and simple, with a large claw-tub bath for long soaks and a shower head (hand-held), as well another bay window with hanging plant. We are on well-water regularly checked and filtered. Our equally simple kitchen has authentic Italian tile floors and granite counters, and is fully equipped for real cooking.

Enjoy our superb classical / jazz CD collection, as well as turntable for historic vinyls (organized in living room closet).

Our house is located on a private drive off a low-traffic road.

We are licensed by the town of Woodstock Permit #20H-172

We are animal lovers. One pet is allowed during your stay (ONE well-trained dog or cat). Please advise us in advance of your furry friend. ALL PETS MUST BE APPROVED IN ADVANCE.

Serene getaway

Our stay was lovely. The yard and pool were amazing and provided a beautiful setting for a relaxing weekend. The book collection alone is enough to keep you occupied and intrigued for days. Overall a great escape back to nature.

Outstanding pool experience

Outstanding pool experience in the middle of the woods and a property dotted with flower and landscape gardens. Great location - near town but secluded. Privacy amongst the tall trees ❤️

Perfect Relaxation Getaway

Laura & Bernard’s home in Woodstock was the perfect secluded getaway for us. The heated pool & fire pit were the perfect ways to start and end the relaxing rural days. Our dog ran all over and it was the perfect ambience! We saw deer every morning in the pasture next to the house and it felt very secluded while being such a short walk to the swimming hole and town. Perfect weekend getaway, would go back in an instant!

Warm, cozy and quiet

We came up for a pre-New Year's Eve stay, looking for something nice and quiet with a fireplace. It wound up being just about perfect. The fireplace kept us warm during the ice storms that just happened to hit while we were there, plus it just makes the whole place smell fantastic. It's just a quick walk or drive into town, where there are wonderful shops (we got some wood chimes!). I'd highly recommend the property, and the owners were very easy to communicate with. I bet it would be great in the summer too, so if you want a fun, relaxing getaway from the city or wherever you're from, this is an excellent choice.

Nice pool but house was not set up for guests

The pool was beautiful and the proximity to town was great! but the house needed some repairs that were not communicated to us in the listing or prior to our arrival. The owner says the needed repairs were mentioned in the house manual, but they weren’t and we only received the manual the day before we arrived. The bathroom window cranks and frames were broken and didn’t shut or lock. The bathroom was on the first floor and this felt unsafe. The kitchen screen door was broken as was the screen in the sliding door. Given that there was no AC in the main living area, it would have been nice to be able to keep these doors open. The kitchen was was not clean. There was no dining table inside. An antique long narrow table with dining chairs was there but the bottoms/springs of the chairs were falling out and not useable. While the house was obviously very loved by the owner, it was not set up to host guests. The host told us we’re we’re basically paying for the pool, “gardens” and proximity to town. We left a day early. If you’re looking for a place to crash after spending the day/evening at the pool/in town, this house is fine.

A beautiful place

What a great time I had at Laura and Bernard's house! The pool, the gardens, the house with comfy king-size bed. Wow! What a great experience. I hope to return soon. It was such a relaxing stay, just what I needed to de-stress for a couple of days.

About the host

Host profile image
We are professors of English and Philosophy. We love books -- as you will see from our rentals -- and animals. We are writers as well as college teachers, and big fans of all the arts as well as traveling. Our Woodstock house is our beloved and relaxing residence, which we like to share with like-minded people when we are away. We designed this homes many features and renovations, as well as the new pool and all the gardens ourselves. Sadly, Bernard passed away in 2021, and Laura lives here part time, renting some months.

Why they chose this property

This is our part-time residence. We love sharing it with guests when we travel. We've been renting since 2000, and have enjoyed sharing this special space with many others. We've received many wonderful reviews about people's stays on this and other websites over the years.

What makes this property unique

This is a special property, full of charm, art works, a cozy fireplace in winter -- in summer months extraordinary blooming sun and shade gardens that surround the house with lush green and offer many contemplative spots for sitting, conversing, or just relaxing in or out of the sun. In 2020 we built the heated swimming pool in the midst of our forest, and that pool area now provides yet another wonderful area for relaxation, exercise, and fun. We have plenty of outdoor chairs and sun-umbrellas for summer, although much of the house itself is well-shaded in summer. The sun in winter lights up the bay window filled with house plants that often bear winter blooms.

Our guests say that our house has an ambiance that has to be felt and experienced. Pictures do not do it justice. It is an incredibly relaxing retreat, or a place to write, read, paint, or just hang out. It is not a luxurious space but innovative. People who appreciate simplicity, quiet, and the beauty of nature along with close accessibility to the lovely Woodstock Village (walking distance for most) will enjoy our Woodstock house.
