The Island:
• Prudence Island is an island located in Narragansett Bay, Rhode island. The year round population hovers around 80 people.
• In colonial times the island was used for farming, until early 20th century when the US Navy established an ammunition depot on the southern end of the island, however since the early 1970s the US Navy turned over the base to the National Estuarina Research Reserve, part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
• The majority of the land on the island is a preserve, so there are few homes and only around 80 annual residents.
• There is no real commerce on the island, although the general store at the ferry terminal does have a small selection of basics if you are in a pinch.
• Car and people access to the island is obtained via ferry, although there is a private water taxi company you can use to get passengers off the island.
• Prudence Island is a gem. Few people know of it’s existence, but those that do tend to return year in and year out to enjoy disconnecting from the fast pace of life and enjoying the quiet refuge it provides.
