Bear Lodge

My family and I really enjoyed our stay. Overall rating was a 4 because the beds on the main floor were not comfortable, per the mother in laws that slept in them. I also think it would be good to put command hooks in the bathrooms for towels. The downstairs bed was amazing!!! The home is beautiful with lovely scenery. Loved the stay!!

Perfect family cabin

We will definitely be staying again. My family plans a trip to Cloudcroft about twice a year and this was by far the best place we have stayed. The house was just as listed. Clean, very well stocked, comfortable beds and so much room for kids. Having the cabin back up to the national forest was awesome. Not having a house behind us and all the wildlife was perfect. The location was perfect also just a short drive to the shops and restaurants.

Everyone loved it!

Whole family of 11 (6 adults and 5 children) met up here for 4 nights. What a great place to meet with the family! The three floors allowed everyone to spread out. The kitchen was better stocked than anywhere I've stayed before. Right up against the forest and just a beautiful house. Quality appliances and ample printed information (interaction via Vrbo chat was slow, but local contact was quick to respond). Foosball table was a nice surprise. The only word of warning would be that the notes about recommending 4WD due to the steep incline I assumed was for the driveway.. It's actually to even start to ascend into the neighborhood. If your vehicle couldn't do a 16% grade for 50-80m on a gravel road, you may not make it to the house! It was rainy and we did just fine in a FWD minivan, one of our Focus STs had some issues in dry weather, but made it up. Just something to be mindful of.
Beautiful craftsmenship.
Won't soon forget our stay!

Beautiful, Cozy Property

Wonderful stay over Christmas with family.(6 adults, 2 kids) Plenty of space for everyone. Very well maintained and clean. Enjoyed short hikes in the snow, the hot tub, fireplace,(plenty of wood provided ) toys for kiddos, snow tubing, skiing and shopping in town. But most of all just hanging out with the family in the lovely, cozy space and watching the deer visit daily in the back yard.

Wiseman Family Reunion

We first visited Bear Ridge Log Cabin in 2009 when my grandaughters were 7 and 4 and returned several years later. It was o lovely to be back and the granddaughters, now 22 and almost 19 absolutely loved it. The views from the balcony are lovely and having the Lincoln National Forest outside the back door was great. We saw a mule deer, and a mama skunk with 4 little ones. The contact for questions or problems was very responsive to our one call. The book the owners provided was fascinating with the story of how the cabin came to be and loads of local and park information. We will be back!!

Cloudcroft is a village.

The television downstairs didn’t work.. The toilet was repaired immediately after we called. We had two days of snow and we enjoyed snowshoeing out our back door. It might be good to remind future renters that Cloudcroft is a village, so bring groceries.

Cleaning

Beds were a lot of pet's hair. The blankets in the closet smell dirty. The grill was not working, the gas not up to grill. We have 4 years going in the same weekend on president's day and on this trip the beds unclean were the mayor issue.

Great location!

This cabin is close to everything we needed. Walking distance to town, restraunts, running and hiking trails. Our vehicles didn't move all weekend! The hot tub was a nice treat! The open area behind the house was fantastic. Our kids played for hours out there. A few things to be aware of... the house was not well stocked. We had to go get hand soap, laundry detergent, clorox wipes and trash bags... we didn't mind but we also didn't know to bring some of those things (we VRBO alot... most of that is provided). I don't know if it was a busy weekend or the norm but the Family Dollar (the only thing besides an Allsup's... there is NO grocery store!) was very picked over and had lots of empty shelves. Also for a house this size more towels should be available. Really a great house but just a few things to have a heads up about!

Beautiful cabin with beautiful woods in the back. The cabin appeared clean but dishes and pans seemed dusty so I had to rinse everything I used first. Bedding and towels were clean but didn't feel fresh. Went back to check the reviews because I thought I remembered seeing that the house was well stocked as essential items were missing. When I went back today to look (yes several reviews did say that), I noticed the price of the cabin dropped SIGNIFICANTLY per night for the next few months, which was really disappointing, and i am pretty salty about. There was no oil to cook with and the coffee smelled stale. For such a pricey cabin, I would have also appreciated better body soap (they provided miniature wrapped bars). There was no shampoo and conditioner, lotion, or tissues. The smoke detector started chirping the first night we were there but stopped the next day, so I didn't call. It started chirping again the second night lol. There were lots of games to play and the hot tub was nice. The town was cute and I met the mayor, but every restaurant we went to ran out of food, so eat as early as possible. We finally got in to Mad Jack's on Sunday and it was great. We were visited by elk, deer, a skunk, and even a small family of horses. The animals and hot tub were the highlight of the trip. Again, cabin was beautiful, but everything inside felt dusty. I expected better for the price we paid per night.

First off, avoid access to Geronimo via Apache Drive. It is steep, gravelly, and unless you have 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with power, you will get stuck. Yes, I did, but was able to back-up all the way down. The property itself is nice, scenic, and has the Osha trail in the back. It is close enough to walk that trail to Burro Street with no problem. It was windy and colder than heck, so unfortunately, we did not use the hot tub. The property has many stairs (no treads), so anyone with children or older individuals must practice caution, of course. The bathroom on the main floor (2nd floor), has a clawfoot slipper-type tub, but no mat. I opted to use the 1st floor shower for safety. The shower is standing room only, so if you're a little fluffy, it will be a bit crowded with body insulation. The area had many moths flying around like bats, but they soon met their untimely demise with fireplace use. Wildlife are in the area. Mule deer and a Steller Jay were the only animals we saw. The property is equipped with pots/pans, and silverware, washer/dryer and 2 TVs. One for video games, and the other for movies. The loft is for older elementary children and/or teens. We had a good time, and hope you do, too!

Our first visit to Cloudcroft was in 2004. We had recently moved to El Paso from Oregon and had heard that Cloudcroft, just a short drive away, had forests like we enjoyed in Oregon. We decided to take a camping trip with our one-year old boy and our dog. After a great campfire cookout, we called it a night. At about 2:00 am, we heard our dog barking and opened the tent to quiet her. Instead we found ourselves next to a large black bear. We managed to scare the bear away, but decided against another night sleeping with just tent fabric between a bear and myself. We went into town the next day to look for a rental cabin. While we were waiting for the cabin, we drove around Cloudcroft and completely fell in love with the village and the forest. We saw some property for sale that backed into the National Forest and bought it the same day. A year later we began construction on a log home and named it Bear Ridge Log Home. We had the bear paw carvings included in the design in memory of our bear.

Why they chose this property

A handcrafted log home is a home built with full round logs using many handheld tools such as axes, chisels and scribers. It captures the authenticity of log homes built many years ago. Log homes usually fall into two categories, milled (or manufactured) and Handcrafted. With a milled homes mechanized high-speed woodworking machinery are used to precut uniform logs. The logs are usually no more than 8 in. in diameter and 12 ft. long. With a handcrafted log home logs will vary in size and shape and are limited only by the trees. Bear Ridge log home is a Handcrafted log home built by three expert carvers at Pioneer Log Homes. It uses an average of 16 in diameter logs some over 35 ft long, and integrates many of the unique characteristics of the logs in the home. The artistic logs, benches, front arch, and bear paws were part of the creative woodworking skill of the carvers. There is no other home designed like it.
