About this property

Oysterhouse - A premium luxury experience right by the water.

Oysterhouse is close to the airport (15min), Hobart city (25min easy drive), a central shopping precinct (less than 10 minutes). We are well located to access the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur and the East Coast. We are also within a short, scenic drive of historic Richmond and the award winning wineries and restaurants in the Coal River Wine Region.

*Looking for a truly special treat? Oysterhouse has its own helicopter pad! If you would like Tasmanian Air Tours to pick you up from the property and take you on a bespoke tour, a picnic on a private beach, a visit to some of the above places or a trip to the city of Hobart please contact us for further details.

You will love our place because here you will feel nurtured by nature in total privacy on an absolute waterfront setting overlooking Pittwater, Borilla Bay and the many oyster farms dotted throughout the estuary.
At Oysterhouse there is an intimate relationship with the water and shoreline.
Staying in Oysterhouse is a premium luxury experience. You will have stunning unparalleled ever-changing views where at every turn floor to ceiling double glazed windows frame the estuary allowing you to observe nature from extreme comfort no matter what the weather. Huge bi-fold doors open on to expansive decking where you may chose to relax on one of the outdoor bean bags, fish off the deck or dine al fresco.
Nearby is a registered Ramsar international bird sanctuary providing habitat for migratory shorebirds and regionally significant flora and fauna.
Seals are often spotted and pods of dolphins are also sometimes seen.
To visit you will leave the main road and enter a private road at the end of which is a historic railway cutting; this is Oysterhouse's private driveway.
In the evenings and early mornings expect to see wallabies, possums and echidnas.
The house is extremely spacious and the lounge is very comfortable with a cosy slow combustion fire, 65inch Smart TV, DVDs (in the cabinet there is an extensive range of DVDs), stereo and radio.
There is a large selection of books and a range of board games.
Heating and cooling can also be achieved from the reverse cycle air conditioner.
There is a gourmet kitchen with fan forced oven, gas plates, microwave/convection oven and steam oven and enough appliances to allow you to cook up a storm.
The master bedroom suite has the essence of a luxury resort. There is a luxury king bed where you can relax and enjoy the uninterrupted views over the water. The other bedrooms are very comfortable, carpeted and have luxury linen.
In the European laundry there is a front-loading washer, washing powder, iron and ironing board.
Older children will love the property but it is not ideal for very little ones due to its proximity to the water however if you wish to bring young children this can be discussed.

Beautiful Oasis

Gorgeous spot just outside Hobart, with open views to the estuary, and wonderfully quiet (no neighbors). Artwork in the home by the owner done in ash are both striking and thought-provoking. Tough to say goodbye!

We will be back!

Of our 12 nights and 7 properties this was our favourite. Everything from the beauty of the location (very private and secluded yet 10 mins from town) to the gorgeous design and comfort of the home to the amazing artwork on the walls to the fireplace being ready to just through a match in was delightful. This was only 2 nights but we all wished it was more. Next time it'll be a base for a much longer stay. Thank you so much

This is the most beautiful home in the most beautiful setting imaginable. It is absolutely sublime. Secluded on a point of land extending into the bay with views of the sea and the mountains through its floor-to-ceiling windows that extend the length of the house, this home was designed and furnished by owners of exquisite taste. Nigel could not have been more gracious in his communications or more generous in introducing guests to the many secrets that make a stay here so special—from invitations to take large bean bag chairs onto the deck on sunny days to instructions about how to use the inviting wood burning stove to add warmth to the beautifully appointed living room on rainy days. And as if all of this weren’t enough, the home is itself an art gallery with extraordinary works that invite contemplation and extended conversations. We couldn’t have been luckier than to have had the opportunity to stay in the magnificent oyster house!

Fantastic location

We could not fault our 10 day stay at The Oyster House such a great location.. We took our kayaks and used them nearly every day mainly of a morning as the water was so calm ..A little private cove and private beach made it more special ..Watching the different weather roll in from the large windows was beautiful…Definitely will be returning

If we lived inTassie, we'd be repeat guests.

I don't believe we have stayed in a more relaxing property. It is spacious (the master bedroom & en-suite are probably the largest we have experienced, the king bed comfortable & most welcome), is well appointed with relaxing & clean furniture & has an extremely well-equipped kitchen for those wanting to prepare meals (along with a vast array of cookbooks, spices & condiments). The view overlooking Barilla Bay is definitely the icing. If we found one thing disappointing, it was that there is but one armchair in which to sit close to the panoramic windows & easily image you are sailing across the waters.Yes, it is 30 min to Hobart central for restaurants, but with Barilla Bay oysters, prawns & scallops close by, why would you dine out?Would we stay again? Most definitely.

Water front ambiance

The moment we drove through the old railway cut out between the rocks we felt relaxed. The view from the living area and main bedroom had us feeling like we were floating on the water. The home is warm, welcoming and with every convenience we could’ve asked for. Location ideal and proximity to Hobart makes it feel remote yet so close to amenities in need. A lovely home and stay.

About the host

Hosted by Nigel Hewitt

Host profile image
We share our time between Tasmania and WA , where most of our family live, and love both places. Nigel is a visual artist, it is mostly his work which you will see in Oysterhouse, and Denise is a retired Teaching and Leadership Advisor. We see ourselves as custodians of the land where Oysterhouse sits and we recognise and respect the significant First Nations history and we take responsibility to care for the fragile surrounding environment.

Why they chose this property

The property offers tranquility and absolute privacy right on the water. Yet, within ten minutes you can access all shopping requirements. The airport is 15 minutes away and Hobart city 25 minutes.
But when you arrive at Oysterhouse you are very likely to feel inclined just to stay and enjoy everything the property has to offer.

What makes this property unique

You have a magnificent, uninterrupted water views and your own private access to Pittwater estuary where the fishing is fabulous. Predominantly Flathead are caught but there are many other species dependent on conditions. There is a kayak for your use. The privacy at Oysterhouse is absolute. Caretakers live 250m up the driveway if you need any assistance. The kitchen is very well equipped with steam oven, convection oven and standard oven. The main bedroom has a luxurious king bed where you can relax and enjoy looking out over the water.
The property borders a Ramsar International wetlands site which supports a diversity of coastal, intertidal and marine habitats and communities, and is therefore a species-rich environment. It is considered important for conservation of coastal birdlife at the bioregional scale. Most of the wetland is fringed by saltmarsh vegetation and rocky shores. The Site supports a range of globally threatened species such as the critically endangered swift parrot , the endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle (keep your eye out because we have a frequent visitor) and the far eastern curlew. Extensive oyster farming operations occur in the estuary and you will witness the oyster boats passing by.
The property driveway is the historical Sorell - Bellerieve railway cutting which if interested you can read more about in the books provided.
