This property is like a little world of its own. Here you can get completely back to nature. The self contained cabin is newly renovated, comfy, secluded and a little quirky. It offers a private wood fired hot tub, garden hammock, creek views with private access to the creek, indoor & outdoor dining table, fireplace in the lounge room, upstairs bedroom with comfortable super king bed and fully equipped kitchen. We're off-grid, so your stay will be carbon neutral.
The cabin accommodates 2 adults in the upstairs bedroom & 2 children on the sofa bed on the ground level lounge room. If your group is 4 adults we can accommodate 2 in the cabin & 2 in our house truck located 50 metres away (see our other site "Alpacas Off Grid - House Truck (Spacious/Boutique). Children are charged $90 per night per child (2-17 yrs).
Step into another world: You will be on 32 acres of stunning native bush bordering the Kahurangi National Park. Star gazing is amongst some of the best on offer with zero light pollution. You will be sharing it with alpacas, chickens, ducks and a Tibetan Spaniel.
We have glow worms!!!!...On site you'll find lots of beautiful walking tracks, a couple of crystal clear creeks as well as diverse and plentiful wildlife....not to mention lots and lots of peace and quiet.
We hope to appeal to guests looking for a fun experience. We provide comfortable accommodation with an emphasis on what is essential. For us that means getting in touch with nature. Living simply.
We do not offer a TV, although there is a stereo. Internet access is available at our house daily 8am-midday but wifi is not in the cabin. We encourage people to unplug...play some board games...visit the alpacas. International guests should buy a 'Spark' SIM card for the best reception in this area.
We ask guests to take it slow on the steep gravel driveway and to close any gates they open as some animals are roaming.
We believe the Golden Bay area is still very much under rated so we advise guests to allow as much time as possible to explore the area properly. A vehicle is more or less essential unless you fly into Takaka in which case a car rental can be made. In winter you may arrange free airport transfers with us. It is certainly possible to spend a couple of nights here without a car for those who just want to relax.

Lovely laid back couple, enjoyed our chats & Alpaca walk. Would highly recommend to other hosts & would welcome these guests back anytime.
We had an absolutely wonderful time - the accomodation is comfortable and clean, the alpaca are adorable, and the hosts are lovely. Breakfast was a real highlight, as well as the views. We will definitely be coming back to stay again!

Such a pleasure to meet you folks. Hope to see you again :)
The stay was so delightful and memorable. The guest suite, the alpacas, the breakfast on the patio with a stunning view were all fabulous. It’s a farm stay with quirky edges but totally comfortable and I’d go back in a heartbeat. The area of Golden Bay is now our favourite part of New Zealand and we’re so glad we found it.

It was an absolute pleasure to help you discover Golden Bay folks. We get great enjoyment from making guest stays as memorable as possible and we sincerely hope you stay in touch.
Highlights: getting to know the alpacas, chickens and dog.....and the owners who are very kind but unobtrusive.
Relaxing and unplugging ...... off the grid
Yummy breakfasts with ingredients gathered on the property
Starlight hot tub with just the sounds of cicadas and the creek
Really remote with beautiful scenery yet so much to do in the area
We will definitely be back! Thanks 🙏
Nat and Grant have the friendliest chickens with the strongest personalities we have ever met. But also the alpacas, ducks and even the hosts themselves are wonderful to spend time with. ;)
The spacious property is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature. The lovingly homemade breakfast was always a highlight for a great start into the day.

We had a wonderful weekend at the Alpaca farm. The eco-cabin is really comfortable and easy to feel at home in. The jacuzzi is really nice. The garden, the scenery and the animals are incredible: you feel like you've stepped out of time.
The breakfast is very good, even if the time at which it is served is fixed (no change possible).
The hosts are very friendly and give very good advice on visiting the magnificent region.
The only thing to watch out for is accessibility: if you don't have a 4x4, it's really complicated to get to the farm. In this case, ask your host to come and collect you and your luggage, and do it in advance (there is no connection near the farm).

About the host
Hosted by Natalie & Grant Patterson
Your hosts at the Alpacas Off Grid are Grant, Natalie, Shanti the Tibetan Spaniel, 15 Alpacas, 7 chickens and 4 ducks.
Their property used to be part of a large farm owned by the Riordan family. It was later subdivided and Grant and Nat purchased one of those subdivided sections in May 2019. With the creek, the off-grid house, and plenty of grazing for the alpacas - it was just what they were looking for.
Both Nat and Grant have both travelled extensively, and most recently lived for 5 years on Waiheke Island before moving to Golden Bay. Nat is a yoga teacher, originally from Brisbane and spins and knits garments from her alpaca's fleece. Grant loves the outdoors and frequently runs up the Kill Devil track on the neighbouring property - for fun!
Nat and Grant are experienced hosts having run a guest house on Waiheke Island during their time there. They love sharing their beautiful part of New Zealand with others - and look forward to welcoming you to Alpacas Off Grid!
