Looking for a unique beach cottage for your beach vacation? We've got it! The Gulf Shack is an adorable 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath home that accommodates up to 8 guests. Located just a short five-minute walk from the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, this home is sure to please. And...it won't break the bank! The Gulf Shack is tucked away off Veterans Road which boasts not only easy beach access but beautiful natural surroundings. The main level offers a fully equipped kitchen, a nice sized living room area, a full bathroom, and 1 bedroom with a King sized bed. Take the steps up to the sleeping loft where you will find a large open space with a sitting area, 2 Queen sized beds, and a trundle. The interior steps to the loft are pretty steep and narrow so it may not be child friendly (for a small child). The upper loft does also have access to an upper open deck as well as an exterior exit. Enjoy the large sun porch on the main level that offers a great porch swing, a nice sitting area next to the open deck plus a fish cleaning station the best spot to clean your fresh catch of the day! This is a great home for a family or couple(s) on a budget looking to come to stay within walking distance of the beach. (This home has window units for air conditioning and heat).

Gulf Shack

The property was in good shape, and was clean. The privacy and vicinity to the beach are far and away the best parts of the house. The VRBO listing said that there was internet, but there wasn’t. Was not a big hang up for us, but if you’re going to be remote working from here, bring a mobile hotpot. There are games, dvds, and televisions in case bad weather rolls in, which was a lifesaver for us on a rainy day. I would suggest the host add a bit more toilet paper as this location is billed as a large group spot. Having to get an account with a real estate company on their website after booking through VRBO was a bit of an annoyance (a 21st century gripe, but valid when one considers the convenience one’s paying for). You have to drive to the Reed Real Estate office to get the key code instead of just being given it via the app or email. If you can’t make it to the office in time they’ll leave it in a Dropbox - at the office. Kind of a bummer, but again, first world problems. Kitchen has a ton of cookware and utensils which does come in handy when feeding 6 people; this was a wonderful feature as houses I’ve stayed in before have had the accoutrements of a cave. The walk to the beach is about a block. There are only three public spaces to park, so hoof it if you can. A very doable distance if you plan ahead.

Better not and never again

The rental is through Reed, a rental agency. Even if you book directly through VRBO, they require you to confirming your reservation, paying through their website, sending a scan of your passport, signing a rental agreement, picking up the key code in person (!) at their rental office between 3 and 5pm. We had to drive an extra 12 miles, just to get a piece of paper with the key code, which other VRBO hosts send by email. This additional booking process was very time consuming and involved additional phone calls and emails back and forth. In short, VRBO should make it clear that this agency requires you to do the entire booking again. However, we would not book the house again. Key features that were mentioned in the VRBO ad and were a deciding factor in our booking do not exist, such as WiFi or an ocean view. You probably cannot expect an ocean view for the price, but then you should not put it in the description. We have emailed Reed asking for a response, but the agency has not replied to date. Had we known this we would not have booked the house. In addition to these serious misrepresentations in the advertisement, the house is in a poor state of repair: It is quite run down and in poor general condition. It was cleaned ok but even the best cleaning team cannot clean rusty furniture or work their magic in the short time they have when a house needs a thorough cleaning and general refurbishment. We would not recommend staying there.

The gulf shack

Over all had a pleasant stay. When an issue came up, the property management team was very responsive. The walk to the beach was a tad further than expected but overall not bad. Would recommend and would stay again.

Nice little place for the money

We had a great time! The house wasn’t really what I was expecting, but it grew on me. The walk was a bit further than I thought, but it is doable. If you don’t want to walk the short distance you are able to drive and park at the dead end (3 cars are able to park).
