Great location, the ‘hut’ has been fitted out with everything you need. Beds are really comfortable, kitchen is so well supplied and everything was super clean and organised.
Great location, the huts are very clean, warm and comfortable well equipped with modern appliances and everything you need for a comfortable stay. The host was great, answered all our questions quickly and was very helpful. We would definitely like to stay again.
Amazing views, super clean cozy place with all the comforts and amenities. Our family really enjoyed the stay here. We’d love to go back when there is snow on the mountains!
The accommodation was very clean. It had everything we needed, a well-stocked kitchen, and having the coffee machine was an added bonus. The beds were comfortable and great configuration for our group. Both huts were very warm and dry. The host was quick to respond to questions, and everything was just very easy. We would definitely recommend this accommodation.
The Backcountry Hut was perfectly located for exploring this beautiful area. The house is very well appointed with everything you need. We could have stayed much longer than three days!
We had a wonderful stay. The house was modern, well designed, warm, clean and very well appointed. Super modern kitchen and bathrooms. The beds were very comfortable. There were lovely views of the Lake and mountains. Great outside deck. Communication with host was easy and pleasant. I highly recommend this bach.
Awesome new home. Really friendly and easy to communicate with Pieter the host. Suited our family well with separate 2 bedroom wing not connected to the main dwelling. Looking forward to visiting again.
Pieter was fantastic. We couldn’t get in due to weather so we stayed in contact and he was flexible and accommodating. Great house, great location.

About the host
Hosted by Pieter
Our family has been camping at Lake Middleton (the lake you can see from the bedrooms) every summer for around 60 years. Ivan and Betty Bulling (my grandparents) started the tradition and my extended family continues to meet here every year.
Ivan established a furniture business (Ivan Bulling Furniture, based in Invercargill). My father and uncle continue to run this business and most of the (somewhat mismatched) furniture has come from the Ivan Bulling factory. The kitchen was designed by my cousin and brought to life and installed by my father and uncle. The oak vanities are made from a tree cut down by Ivan in Athol many years ago. You will see a photo of him on the photo board in the house, standing beside the tree.
Piet’s Place contains a lot of my cycling memorabilia (please respect these items) and Charlie’s Hut is named after my red fox Labrador, Charlie.
