About this property

Artful Lodging Mountain-view Studio+1 Bedrm Apt in Historic Home, Montpelier VT

This sunny, beautifully decorated, fully furnished apartment is in the rear of an historic Civil War Infirmary building, part of the Sloan Hospital, and was rolled down the street from the Vermont College green in the 1870's, then fully updated with every modern convenience! The apartment is cozy during winter with loads of windows and sunshine, and cool in summer with A/C if you feel you need it. The apartment includes a fully outfitted kitchen and bathroom with anything you might need. There are 2 beds in the main room - 1 queen and 1 twin, which also serves as a couch. In the hallway at the rear of the room is the full bath (shower only) and a little bedroom with a extra full double mattress on the floor. There is a little balcony deck at the entrance and top of the stairs. Please let us know if you need baby furniture and toys for the apartment. We have loads of books and games, and I always put into the apartment toys suited to the ages of visiting children. Our backyard has a spectacular view of Camel's Hump and the valley with the capitol building and downtown. We welcome guests to sit and enjoy cocktails at sunset or have a barbecue. (Just ask so we can coordinate with our other guests.) The house is walking distance to downtown, very near the college green and VCFA campus, and many area attractions and resorts, including Stowe, Sugarbush, Trapp Family Lodge, and Bolton Valley (all 30-40 minutes drive). Morse Farm Mountain Bike and Nordic Center is just up the hill, right in Montpelier. Kellogg Hubbard Library in town holds many events for kids, a local rec center has tennis courts, several ball fields and a pool. There is a reservoir for cookouts and swimming in summer, and many rivers and streams to play and fish in right in town. We have kayaks, nordic skis, snowshoes, and other sporting equipment we are happy to share. Montpelier is a great central location for day trips, and we are happy to be your guide. Check out the Montpelier Alive schedule and the city website, as well as Lost Nation Theater. Burlington and Lake Champlain are a 35 minute drive, and hiking trails are 20-30 minutes away to Camel's Hump and White Rocks/Hunger Mountain trailheads. The city circ bus stops regularly in front of the house and will quickly bring you to pick up groceries. We have two movie theaters in town as well! This is truly your home away from home!
If our calendar is full, please contact me as we have two other apartments here: listings #454402 (2nd Floor 3 Bedroom Apt) and #614274 (1st Floor 2 Bedroom Apt), both of which are located at the front of the house.
Many families and groups book the entire property for small events or reunions. Please let me know if you are interested in this offering and I can provide more details and pricing information.
Thank you again for your interest in Artful Lodging & Retreats.

Perfect location
We loved the location of the property. It had beautiful vistas and was very conveniently located to downtown Montpelier as well as for exploration of that area of Vermont. Beth was very helpful with suggestions and very responsive to our questions.

About the host

Host profile image
I am an architect, artist, educator, and lover of this wonderful historic home. I have raised my 4 children here, and now that they are grown, I am able to share my home with you. When I am not working on the house, I am painting, gardening, or adventuring outdoors. I love sharing my unique and fun spots with guests who visit. I hope you'll come and stay here, and please check out the other two apartments at the front of the house, which can both be rented together for larger groups at VRBO #614274 and #454402.

Why they chose this property

Our home was part of the Sloan Hospital, a Civil War Infirmary. In the early 1870's it was rolled down the street to this location, and a series of additions were added on through the years, the last one I designed and helped build.
The house is located very close to Vermont College of Fine Arts and is a short walk to downtown. There is always a lot going on in Montpelier, so check the city website. Visit and enjoy restaurants, shops, live music, and festivals. Montpelier's central location makes it ideal for touring the area and seeing famous resorts and sites.

What makes this property unique

Our home is a wonderful blend of historic charm and fully updated modern comforts. The studio apartment is newly built, and has a great deal of privacy, tucked away in the back yard, with a truly spectacular view of downtown and Camel's Hump beyond. Once here, you might now want to leave :-) Our back yard is a fun place to relax in the summer months, when you are not out and about.
