About this property
Kookaburra Cottage on sub-tropical island near Dalpura Beach
Kick back and relax in this calm, stylish space called Kookaburra Cottage on the beautiful Macleay island within Moreton Bay marine park. This late 60’s house has been beautifully renovated with serene views of beautiful trees from the heritage block next door.
Visitors arriving on Macleay Island find it to be a beautiful and peaceful place in a gorgeous bay setting, where you can enjoy nature and the abundant bird life.
Kookaburra Cottage is situated towards the north end of 6 km long Macleay Island and only 200 metres from Dalpura Beach (the best little beach on Macleay Island). A 10 min walk in the other direction you can do excellent dining and sunset drinks at the Bowls Club, or visit the Macleay Island Arts Centre (with great exhibitions), or the Boat Club Sunday lunch on the deck.
ABOUT THIS SPACE
Kookaburra Cottage is a 60’s style house that has been lovingly renovated with light filled rooms. There are plenty of tall trees to gaze at through the windows. The kitchen/dining/living space is open planned with great views out to the heritage blocks next door and out the back where the large trees provide a lot of bird life, including Kookaburras.
A variety of sleeping options are available with three bedrooms and 4 beds - queen bed, double bed and two single beds. All bedrooms have fans and opening casement windows (with mosquito screens) to catch the lovely sea breezes.
You can whip up a snack or cook a feast in the fully functioning kitchen. There is a large fridge, oven, microwave, cooktop and dishwasher, as well as a washer/dryer. There are some spreads and supplies in the pantry.
A large back patio gives you different spaces to hang out. There are bar stools and a table (with over hanging banana trees) where you can sip your coffee or have a glass of wine watching the beautiful sunset skies. Or there is a coffee table and cane chairs to relax in. Beside the house and behind the house are two heritage blocks with large trees and that add to the peace.
At the front of the house there is a cute covered deck area which is nice to sit down in during hot days.
The bathroom has a walk in shower and a good sized bath. We use gas bottles for the hot water and always have a spare set up ready to easily change over the knobs incase you run out. The toilet is seperate.
The garden is newly created and is being set up as an edible garden.
TRANSPORT OPTIONS TO MACLEAY ISLAND
You have a couple of options, depending on whether you wish to bring a car over to the island (come by car barge ferry ), or catch a passenger ferry and then get the taxi bus to Kookaburra Cottage.
If you come by passenger ferry - you can bring what you need in a trolley/bag/suitcase with wheels, etc. You might like to bring a small bag of groceries for breakfasts & lunches (or shop at our local Spar & 5 Star supermarkets).
Eating out for dinners is a good option. There are free courtesy buses to a couple of clubs (Club Macleay and the Golf Club). You can phone to have them pick you up and return you and enjoy a nice meal at their venue.
There are also a couple of cafes/restaurants (such as Mamma Pizza) that do delivery.
Taxi fees range $10 - 15 and is the same cost whether 1 person or 5 people.
There is parking at Redland Bay Marina in the free Moore’s Rd Parking lot (which is a ten min walk from the Ferry Terminal). Please be sure to leave plenty of time to look for parking as it is extremely busy.
Car Barge Bookings - f you want to bring your car over you need to book a car barge which is around $70 each way. https://www.stradbrokeferries.com.au/ for booking car barge.

Put in from Redland bay to Macleay Island when searching. There are ferries every 30 -60 mins. You can buy a ticket on board using a card (note, they will not accept money) or you can use a Go Card, (purchase at a dispensing matching at the Redland Bay Marina).
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
We are situated towards the north end of the island and only 200 metres from Dalpura Beach (the best little beach on Macleay Island). We also have Pat’s Park (with a netted swimming enclosure) that is 1.5 kms north or a 20 min walk. In the other direction it is a 10 min walk to great dining and sunset drinks at the Bowls Club, or to the Macleay Island Arts Centre (with local artist exhibitions), or the Boat Club usually runs sunday Lunch on the Deck.
We are lucky to be located in a quiet neighbourhood, where the locals go to bed quite early and you can expect to hear Kookaburras in the wee early hours near sunrise. So we ask out guests to please be quiet outside after 8.30pm to be mindful of our neighbours.
We also have the bush Curlews, which our Bay Islands are famous for. The are tall lanky birds that like to act like statues if you are near them. You will definitely hear their loud calling sounds starting around sunset.
This is a smoke free home. If you wish to smoke please do so outside.
We are in a quiet neighbourhood, so definitely no parties or loud music.
No pets.
No smoking inside.
