🌿✨ Introducing Tōtaravárre ✨🌿
Tōtaravárre beautifully bridges the majestic Tōtara trees of Aotearoa, New Zealand, with the rugged Swedish mountains. “Várre,” meaning mountain in the language of the Sami people, indigenous to Scandinavia, connects our home to the ancient landscapes of Sweden, while “Tōtara” pays homage to the resilience and strength of these native New Zealand guardians.
In naming our home Tōtaravárre, we celebrate this fusion of worlds in our memories – the rugged, timeless majesty of the Scandinavian fjäll meets the lush, enduring vitality of the New Zealand bush. Mighty Tōtara trees stand high on the hill, watching over us, protecting from the wind during storms, and giving us shade.
Here, where Tui and Kereru birds sing amongst the branches, we find a link to both our heritages. Our home, flanked by Tōtara, looking out over the land, serves as a daily reminder of our commitment to this place and its history.
We are kaitiaki, guardians of this beautiful place. We are guided by those who walked these lands before us and the hope of those who will follow.
Join us in embracing the spirit of Tōtaravárre, a home that stands as a testament to the resilience of nature and the unity of cultures.
Welcome to Tōtaravárre. We look forward to sharing our sanctuary with you.

About the host
Hosted by Magdalena
We are a Swedish family who now also calls New Zealand home. A decade ago, we planned a short stay in New Zealand, but the allure of its pristine nature and welcoming community captivated us, leading us to extend our stay indefinitely. Three years ago, we embarked on a bold project to build an off-grid house, embracing a sustainable lifestyle that harmonizes with our love for the outdoors. Our passion for sustainability is matched by our joy in hosting. Having been expats and avid travelers, we now relish the opportunity to host others, sharing our experiences and the tranquility of our eco-retreat. We're hospitable by nature, and nothing pleases us more than sharing our journey and our home with guests from around the world.
Why they chose this property
Mount Tiger Hills, overlooking Whangarei, captured our hearts with its breathtaking views and serene environment. This area is a perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, surrounded by lush forests and vibrant wildlife, making it an ideal spot for anyone looking to connect with nature. What we enjoy most about this area is the seamless blend of solitude and community. It provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle, yet it is close enough to local attractions and amenities. The clear night skies, the fresh air, and the lush landscapes are daily reminders of why we chose to make this place our home.
What makes this property unique
Our property is a unique blend of innovation and tradition, designed with sustainability at its core. The cabin you will stay in was built by us, with care and attention to every detail. It served as our home during the construction of our main house and is infused with stories of our life and adventures. The off-grid design utilises solar power, rainwater collection, and other eco-friendly technologies, providing a comfortable yet sustainable living experience. Additionally, the surrounding natural beauty, from the panoramic hilltop views to the tranquil wood-fired bush bath, creates a unique, unforgettable experience. This is not just a place to stay; it is an invitation to live differently, even if just for a few days.
