About this property

STUNNING POST AND BEAM HOUSE OVERLOOKING SOMES SOUND, PRIVATE BEACH AND CABINS.

This secluded and quiet 3 acre property at the end of a private road sits on the shores of Somes Sound. Located in the village of Somesville on Mt Desert island, home of Acadia National Park, it is ideally situated between the towns on the eastern half of the island (Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor) and those on the quieter western half (Southwest Harbor, Tremont, Bass Harbor, Bernard). Guests can walk, bike, hike, kayak, and swim (if you like frigid water) right out of the front door. Built in 2012, the property includes the main post and beam house as well as two other cabins, which are rented separately (VRBO # 1013132 and VRBO 1013209) All buildings overlook the water and the private beach. The main house rental does not include the cabins unless you rent them separately. A discount may be offered if you rent all three. Again each of the buildings can be rented singly or together. PLEASE be aware that there may be rental times when all three of the properties are rented to different guests.
The main house is an expansive two levels with a large loft area, large kitchen, two wood burning fireplaces, a half bath and an extensive library. The main floor has two large bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath. The second floor has a separate bedroom with bath and the loft area has two built in beds as well as a futon. The back of the house is oriented towards the water and the views are stunning. The private beach has a large stone firepit - perfect for lobster bakes or hot dogs and s'mores. There is another round stone firepit on the lawn. The Monson slate patio is the perfect spot for relaxing and watching your guests canoe and kayak or even watching the sailing races that occur throughout the season. Two sea kayak are available for guests to use. The loons have been known to make their presence known - the best spot to hear them is the casita bedroom.

What a treat to stay in this house

The house was a place we would love to live with its beautiful architecture, design, furnishings, and setting. The hosts made it so user friendly with a well stocked kitchen with almost every spice available and we are quite adventurous cookers. The welcome goodies were wonderful and even included the fixings for s’mores so roasted marshmallows at the outside fire pit. We rented this big house and another on the property for our sizable group. We highly recommend this place. The location is great for Acadia Park!

Just like home with a better view!!!

Arax was great to work with and very attentive to questions and our needs. The house had everything you need and then some. We are so used to bringing or buying laundry detergent, spices, etc but this house came equipped with everything you need to make you stay perfect. The kitchen is a cooks dream and was perfect for our family dinners at home. Lastly, the view and location to everything was ideal. This house and view definitely made you feel like you were in Maine. Thanks for a great stay and family vacation.

Unique and Magical Week at Somes Sound Post and Beam House

We are a family of 3 generations - spending a traditional week of summer together. The Post and Beam house is extraordinary with the site positioned perfectly on a spacious lot with a panoramic view of the Sound. Two kayaks were part of the property with an easy walk down to the water. My family used them every day. The kitchen is a fabulous "cooks" dream - luckily two of us love to cook. The space in the house is very generous - allowing 6 people to mix when needed for meals or games and to seek privacy when needed. The host maintains beautiful container plantings and oversees a carefully landscaped property. Quiet and peaceful - complete with loons and bald headed eagles. Conveniently located to Acadia and the small towns in the area for restaurants.

Location is perfect

Beautiful house right on Somes Sound. Must do the fire pit every night, it’s very peaceful. The Home owner (Arax) couldn’t be more accommodating. She was wonderful to work with. Be respectful of the house because it’s a privilege to stay at such a great home. Can’t say enough. Thanks Arax

Beautiful Home on the Somes Sound

We went with our 2 children and their families to celebrate my 60th birthday. The home is beautiful inside with a kitchen unlike any we have had in our vrbo experiences. It also has stunning views of the somes sound that change with the weather and the tides. Our bedroom had sunrise views we couldn't beat anywhere. It was a perfect location for all of the hiking and biking we wanted to do, and we brought paddle boards from home that we used daily on the sound. Our grandchildren spent as much time as they could down by the rocks discovering what the tides left behind. Arax is a wonderful host who gave us a beautiful gift basket with wine and cheese and local favorites and answered any questions we had immediately. We did have to put a few things up out of reach of the grandchildren but we had an amazing experience and would go back to this home without question.

Paradise

The perfect home in a perfect location. We enjoyed our stay so much! The house is even better than pictured which I didn't think was possible. There were so many special areas arranged for either great big family gatherings or multiple spaces for the teens to watch movies while the grandparents read books or had a quiet cup of coffee in the library. We enjoyed incredible sunrises and fires down by the water at night. The hostess was so thoughtful even provided us a lovely basket of local wine and cheese assortments for our arrival as well as coffee and pastries for our first morning. I wished for nothing, except maybe another week!

Amazing Property

We had a large group including my parents, siblings, and many children in varying ages! We had an amazing time and plenty of space for all of us!! Cooking in the kitchen was perfect! Arax left a very thoughtful welcome basket and provided all kinds of information about the island. Her home was absolutely beautiful! The only thing I can say besides perfection is it is not necessarily infant/toddler friendly due to the beautiful decor. I did have a large kids playpen that was a life saver for that aspect; and there was plenty of space to set it up!! Also on the baby note it has all stand up showers! Even knowing the baby side of it I wouldn't have chosen another place because everything else was so perfect!!! Thanks again Arax for everything and sharing your home with us!!

We loved our stay here. Arax was most accommodating and always attentive to questions, etc. The place is beautiful and it has everything and anything you need. She had a wonderful gift basket of goodies that my family enjoyed. It was expensive, but couldn't have enjoyed it anymore.

Wonderful stay

The house and location were fantastic, as was our host. The kitchen was well stocked, and the structure itself was beautifully designed and landscaped. We had a blast and would happily return. Can’t say enough about our host - she thought of everything and helped make the vacation even better. Highly recommend!

Very clean home

Walking into Casa Mitchell feels like you are in a movie. The house is layered with beautiful, warm, interesting and heartfelt furnishings that make it feel like a dream. We were there for six days and we never failed to keep discovering the many details the owner Arax has built into this wonderful house. From the ceiling to floor windows that look out to the bay and the fire pit by the water to the stunning library (with any book you would ever want to read) and welcome basket of local goodies. Arax is THE consummate hostess who has thought of everything (and I do mean everything). For those who like to cook the kitchen is professional and a joy to make a lobster feast (of which we made many). It will inspire you to cook. The property is quite and peaceful but an easy drive to everything on the island. Over the years we have stayed at many rentals but this one stands out for its unique warmth and beauty. This is not a house but a home. It made our Maine trip that much more special. Thank you Arax!

This is a great property on the water. We were able to go swimming and canoeing right from the shore. On the cool Maine evenings we used both the indoor and ourdoor fireplaces. You could not ask for a better place.

Amazing House in an Amazing Place

We absolutely loved our stay in Casa Mitchell. This house and the whole compound worked really well for our family as everyone was able to have their own space as needed but we could share mealtimes and fun times together as well. Highlights were as follows: THE WELCOME: Arax left a basket of treats for us, including s'mores fixings, which we enjoyed twice at the fire pits on the property. She also had mini chocolate bars around the house and a stocked pantry in case we needed anything on the fly. Her flowers and plantings are beautiful, and she even brought some inside in vases for us to enjoy. What a great welcome! THE KITCHEN: What an amazing kitchen to work in! Cooking dinner each night for our family and making wild blueberry and huckleberry treats for desserts and breakfasts -- all of it was a delightful experience thanks to the great industrial stove, roomy fridge and freezer, and the gorgeous view of the sound through the windows. It was also great to have Beech Hill Farm right down the way for fabulous fresh veggies and salad stuff. THE PROPERTY: The location of the property was perfect for us. We wanted to be on the "Quiet Side," so that was great, but being so close to Somesville allowed us to get to all the main sites in Acadia very quickly and easily. But some of our favorite hikes and swimming spots were just a few minutes from the house, including Somes Pond and the surrounding nature reserve, Flying Mountain, Ship Harbor, and Echo Lake. And we LOVED using the kayaks (and a canoe we rented for our stay) to explore the sound right out our back door. Our family is seriously ready to move to Mt. Desert Island and specifically Casa Mitchell. We were all sad to go home, even after 17 days of being there! There was still more to do, and we hope to come back again soon. Thanks for everything, Arax!

What a wonderful place!

Our family stayed in Mount Desert at this wonderful home. The house was just perfect with spectacular views. It was comfortable and certainly accommodated the 8 of us with ease. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed to make our meals.. Arax, the owner, was exceptional and so attentive to detail. We enjoyed biking, hiking, and swimming in the sound. Overall a wonderful place. All of our activities were only a short drive from the house. This was our first time in Maine. We all agreed we would definitely return and would stay here again!

This is a gorgeous home on beautiful waterfront property and about as close as you can get to Acadia

Beautiful home. Fabulous kitchen with well stocked pantry. The owner truly made us feel at home. Everyone loved this home from the 2 year old through the grandparents. The view out the windows of this secluded home was stunning. Grandkids loved checking on the tide throughout the day. It was close to Acadia which was very important when trying to get to the various parking lots before they filled. We absolutely loved our week in this house!

Family Vacation at Mt. Desert

This home exceeded our expectations in all ways. The location provides a beautiful setting on the quiet side of the island away from the crowds of Bar Harbor. Yet it was close enough to Acadia and other points of interest for side trips. The home itself is absolutely gorgeous with many amenities supplied by the owner. We could not have asked for a better venue for our fiftieth anniversary trip with our family.

Just amazing!

The home was spectacular. A very special home on beautiful, well landscaped property. We were a large group and rented the house and cabins. Everyone had plenty of space and thoroughly enjoyed using this as a base to explore Acadia and Bar Harbor. The home owner, Arax, was extremely helpful and left us a wonderful gift basket as a warm welcome. The bedrooms are laid out so that the house can easily accommodate a large group so that everyone has their own space. There is a large loft upstairs that was perfect for our adult kids. The kitchen came with every cooking utensil you could possibly need including a well stocked pantry with the basics. I can't say enough positive things about this very special home. Anyone who stays here will be very lucky It is a unique home in a beautiful setting.

We have been coming to Mt Desert island for over 45 years. Much of our lives have been spent elsewhere but this was the one constant amidst the change.

Why they chose this property

This house was built to entertain friends and family alike be they from far or near. The land was chosen by the owner's father for its proximity to the water and its stunning views of Somes Sound and Sargent Mountain.

What makes this property unique

This area of Maine is truly unique. The presence of Acadia National Park has allowed the area to remain relatively unchanged and that has allowed a quiet that other tourist areas do not share.
