About this property
Secluded ocean-front on Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park.
Private with flexible cancellation policy. Wake up to sound of seals and ocean life on Mount Desert Island. Cantilevered house sited at the high tide mark on Somes Sound. A peaceful unique home with easy viewing of resident eagles, seals and other wildlife. If you are looking for a comfortable oceanfront house with swimmable water, look no further. The beach below has lots of great rocks to dive off or maybe you want to rest and read on a comfortable lounge chair on the deck, that hangs out and over the ocean below. We encourage a 2-week minimum during July & August months. Please reach out if interested in a month or longer for the 2023 season. House is very close (walking distance) to hiking and carriage roads. Carriage roads are very suitable for all ages and athletic abilities. Northeast Harbor is a 5-minute drive, Bar Harbor just about 12 minutes and about the same drive to Southwest--where you will find lots of dining options. Or you might decide to pick up some fresh fish or lobsters and enjoy dinner at the house. Maximum number of guests: 6 guests. Downstairs is a private queen-bedded room with a large picture window (with curtains), a closet and plenty of built-in drawers as well as a mirror that slides up/down in case you would like to wake up to an ocean view. Medium sized bathroom with sunken cast iron tub, great shower head and tiled throughout. Upstairs are bunk beds that thick and comfortable with plenty of windows and side porches; keeps ocean air circulating. There are closets and all bunks have drawers underneath and both sides have bureaus. Big eye-level ocean and mountain views. Separate bathroom upstairs as well. A 48-inch smart TV was added in 2022 (upstairs) as well as a Sonos port to more easily access your own music--connected to 2 house speakers.

About the host
Hosted by Angela
My sisters and I have been enjoying magnificent Mount Desert all our lives. We love the variety of things to do--both on and off the island. You are only limited by your own imagination. Mount Desert Island offers easy access to day hikes, carriage road walks, swimming, sailing or boating in ponds, lakes or the ocean, ferry rides to neighboring islands. Once you get a taste of Acadia National Park, you will get hooked! I provide insider tips and recommendations on specific sights, walking and hiking trails, dining spots etc--to get you started with your own explorations and adventures on Mount Desert Island.
Why they chose this property
This property is unique in that it is extremely close to the water's edge. You can relax on the deck and hear the sounds of the ocean just below. There are very few places quite like our location on Somes Sound, that give such expansive water and ocean views from everywhere in the house. The house is low maintenance and perfect to return to after a full day of activity or to lay low, while reading and/or watching sailing races and other boat activity. Over the years, I have made small adjustments to maintain what so many have grown to appreciate about this wonderful piece of heaven. If you like hearing the ocean lapping the shoreline or waking up to the sounds of seals cavorting, you will love our little "nub house" on Somes Sound.
What makes this property unique
Proximity and surrounding views. Many people love the hot outdoor shower with a views of the Sound and evening sunsets--it doesn't get much better than that! This house feels like a treehouse and is perfect for those looking for tranquility but within easy proximity to everything on Mount Desert Island; hiking, biking, all harbor towns, golf, tennis, canoeing, kayaking (right outside), swimming and so on. The house is built of mostly wood and a lot of glass--offering you and your group mountain and ocean views. We often hear people remark about our site, being one of the best vantage points on Somes Sound facing southwest. The deck hangs out over the water---you will not want to leave especially at sunset. But island adventures are too extensive to list-there are hundreds of things to see and experience on Mount Desert and its neighboring islands. We leave suggestions at the house as well as updated brochures for whale watching, fishing, bird watching, paddle boarding --and so on. In short, if you are a small group and want to be away from the summer crowds but close enough to all grocery stores, shops and restaurants, you will be hard pressed to find a better spot on Somes Sound.
