About this property
Riverside Cottage With Garden And Woodburner
This 200 year old cosy cottage is only a minute away from Braunton village centre but a world away from everyday life. With the river Caen babbling by your doorstep and a sunny open garden to relax in (when sunny) or light the woodburner to get cosy in winter. This is the perfect getaway for a couple, friends or a family (with or without a well behaved dog!).
Tucked away on a riverside path the cottage opens to reveal curvy cobb walls and a newly refurbished contemporary yet cosy interior, refurbished in May 2019.
Perfectly located for surfers, cyclists, walkers and nature lovers alike the cottage is 5 minutes drive from Saunton Sands beach/ Saunton Sands golf club, 50 metres from the Tarka Trail cycle path, 2 minutes walk from Brauntons museums, shops, bars and restaurants, 10 minutes drive from Croyde/ Crow Point beach/ Braunton Burrows or a little bit further is Putsborough, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, Barnstaple and Appledore.
The cottage has been refurbished for 2019 in a cosy, contemporary and calming style that is perfect to relax in.
Downstairs is a well equipped galley kitchen with electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, larder and all utensils, crockery and cutlery you will need. Also downstairs is a fully tiled bathroom with bath and electric shower over.
The living room has a fully beamed ceiling with a lovely new sofa for relaxing by the woodburner, catching a film or a boardgame at the end of the day- there is an extensive selection of dvds, games and books. A country style table and chairs make for a perfect spot for mealtimes. In September 2019 we had a woodburner fitted so that it's even cosier when the nights are longer- we don't supply wood but there is plenty available in the village.
Open cottage stairs lead up to 2 bedrooms- a kingsize and a double. The kingsize room is airy and chic with copper lighting, original panelling and a garden view. With a new super comfy bed, feather bedding and blackout blinds in addition to the lighter curtains- this is a recipe for a perfect nights sleep. There is plenty of storage in this room in addition to the TV and hairdryer.
The double bedroom has a garden view, a beautiful open wood wall and a wardrobe built into a charming nook created (by blocking a doorway) when the original cottage was split years ago. In addition to this are drawers and lights at the bedsides, a new super comfortable bed, feather bedding and blackout blinds for a perfect nights sleep.
From the living room is a door through a porch to get to the lovely enclosed back garden. There is a terrace directly by the house with new wooden table and chairs to eat alfresco (or for a morning cuppa/ evening glass of wine), a parasol for when it gets too sunny and charming lighting for when it gets too dark- or grab a blanket from inside, light a candle in the storm lantern and enjoy the last light in this southwest facing garden.
Some irregular steps climb the original herringbone slate wall (a speciality of this area) up to the lawn where you can sunbathe/ play with the kids or let the dog potter about.
Also in the garden are two stone outbuildings- a utility space with washing machine, tumbledryer and sink in addition to brollies, beach things and bodyboards which you are welcome to borrow during your stay. The second outbuilding provides secure storage for any surfboards/ bikes etc you may have with you.
Children are very welcome at the cottage and we can provide cutlery/ crockery, toy box, games, puzzles, high chair, travel cot with mattress and bottom sheets, baby bath, toddler loo step/ seat, booster seat. The stairs are quite steep so we would recommend using our pressure fitted stairgates at the foot of the stairs for any little ones you would be concerned about- just email us and this can be arranged for your visit. Both bedrooms have blackout blinds and we have a video monitor available and a gro-egg room thermometer/ night light to help with a good bedtime. The cottage is right next to the River Caen which is a stream for most of the year. The path is well protected by a wall on our side but the far side is accessible if you want to have a paddle or try and spot a trout or even an otter! This cottage is perfect for getting the kids outdoors and making some memories.
Dogs are very welcome at the cottage and will even get their own welcome box (blanket, treats, bowl and a drying towel for beach walks) to make their stay special too. They'll love playing in the garden, sunbathing or going on walks by the stream in front of the house or on many of the beautiful beaches where they can run free.
Surfers/ cyclists/ golfers/ other fabulous sportspeople....
In addition to a secure garden we have a secure dry brick outbuilding, both accessed through the house which you are welcome to store your equipment in. Please let us know if you wish to use this. Maximum length surfboards 8'. There is the Otter Cycle hire 50m from the cottage next to the Tarka Trail itself.
Parking; the cottage has no parking as it is not on a road. However it is only 20 metres from where you can park while dropping your things off and only 90m from the central Braunton carpark. This costs £5.00 for 24 hours Monday- Saturday. You can also walk 180m up the Mill Stile lane path to Field Lane where there is free on street parking.
Braunton itself is reputedly the largest village in the UK and is home to a thriving and very friendly community with a great selection of shops, bars, restaurants and makes a great base to explore the amazing surroundings. Braunton is home to the Braunton burrows- one of the largest sand dune complexes in in the UK which make up part of the North Devon Area of outstanding Naural Beauty and a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve. It is significant in terms of ecology and also historically through the second world war. The South West Coastal path also winds its way around this awesomely beautiful area making for some of the most striking scenery you'll find anywhere. Combine that with endless things to do and adventures to have this is a fantastic place to visit and fall in love with.
*Covid-19 update- We have always thoroughly cleaned the cottage between guests. However we are also now using anti-virals to clean all hard surfaces and will wash both mattress and pillow protectors between guests- please ask if you have any questions regarding this or anything else.
Should the government implement a ban (on staying away from home overnight) for your dates a full refund will be given. In any other circumstances standard rules apply regarding refunds, deposits etc. You can find these in the rules section.

About the host
Hosted by Richard Combes
Along with our 3 children and dog we've found this to be an endlessly wonderful place where we return to often. Our main home is in Wiltshire where we both work with gardens and enjoy exploring the outdoors.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this area through our love of surfing, walking, cycling and eating in cosy country pubs and fabulous tearooms. We bought the cottage this year and wholeheartedly hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
What makes this property unique
This cottage is both close to the centre of the village and secluded. We fell in love with the quiet you only get when there's no road outside and the contrast between the open sunny garden and the cosy comforting walls of this 200 year old building. Walking through the front door is like breathing out and taking a moment to just enjoy some time and space in a beautiful part of the world.
