Character Cottage in Dartmoor National Park, Devon.
Smallridge Cottage, is a renovated, 3 / 4 bedroom, 300 + year old cottage in the glorious south Devon countryside, situated within Dartmoor National Park, just a short drive from Ivybridge for all the major facilities, the beaches of the south coast are not far off as are Kingsbridge, Dartmouth, Totnes, etc. A little further are the delights & services of Torbay, Exeter & Plymouth.
Converted with the best of both worlds, the character of a Devon cottage with the convenience of modern appliances & furnishings. Very well insulated & heated for winter use, with full central heating and a wood burning stove. There is a private parking area for 2 cars & 2 outside seating areas supplied with a large patio table & 6 chairs. The cottage is situated in a very peaceful location, ideal for walking or cycling, with local amenities 2 minutes walk away, including a very good “country” pub (great food), a small village shop & tea room, a post office (open 3 days per week).
Entry is from the allocated parking area into the kitchen & on into the dining area or by the front door into the dining area. The kitchen has an extensive range of equipment (electric hot plate, oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, etc), in the dining room is a dining table to seat 6 + & in the lounge is a comfortable 3 piece leather suite set around a coffee table & a wood burning stove, large flat screen tv (with dvd player & sound bar, etc). The area forms a very comfortable & “cosy” environment particularly with the original beamed ceiling. The property is not suitable for wheelchairs.
The master bedroom is on the ground floor and has a double bed, large wardrobe, dressing table, etc with an en-suite toilet, shower & basin. A further 2 bedrooms are located on the first floor, off the internal staircase, the second bedroom has a 4ft double bed & hanging space, the third bedroom has twin beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers & an en-suite toilet & basin. The other room is set up as a “work station” and occasional bedroom / cot room. All are serviced by a family bathroom, bath with shower, hand basin & toilet.
Outside to the side of the property / parking area is a grassed area with steps down to the kitchen door, off the lounge is an enclosed courtyard seating area / sun trap.
The location is a wonderful quiet village in the Devon countryside & within the Dartmoor National Park, but still within easy reach of the local attractions & amenities.
A great holiday location, wonderful, particularly for walkers & cyclists, however we regret because of stairs & the location we are unable to accept pets / dogs or children under 5 (non-mobile babies will be considered).

A well outfitted country cottage. The owner was very responsive to all of our inquiries. Cornwood is a perfect place to unwind. Would highly recommend.
Lovely cottage in a lovely area but the cottage was very tired and lacked a lot of basic care.
There were areas of ?damp with paint coming away from the wall.
The’on suite’ was rather basic and did encourage a damp odour. However the bathroom upstairs was more than adequate.
However the cottage was warm and adequate for our purpose.
Also to add Holly was a great asset and was available if needed.
The cottage was very nice and clean throughout with a very accurate description online.
The cottage is in a small village setting and remote which was fine for us but you need a car to get round. There is nothing in the village except one pub (open 4 days a week) but regrettably we didn't like it at all - very unwelcoming and "couldn't care less" attitude by landlady staff who run it for the village who own it.
I'd recommend to the cottage owners to recommend some other places Dartmoor all within 15 minute drive:
The White Thorn
The Rock (Yelverton)
The Royal Oak
Thanks GAry
Cottage in great country setting and good for looking around.
House lacking advertised hairdryer and only 1 towel per person to last the 5 days. Tv difficult to manage. Downstairs bathroom not easy to navigate and no privacy for toilet. Heating was not adequate for the weather so we made use of the one fan heater that worked well. The fan heater in the downstairs bedroom did not work at all. House needs repairs .

Ok, good quiet locations, parking.
Living room TV very big area, sofa aren't comfortable. All rooms are good size, the bed linen are old. Does not feel fresh and clean,Good bath room towels. Toilet down stairs smell in the bedroom. Kitchen is good size, some furniture doesn't match with the property. The property does smell when we arrive. Not fresh. Good bath room size. Toilet in the bedroom twin bed upstairs smell. Over all the 3 stars rating. The cottage need good deep clean, and too many furniture.
My family and I had a really nice stay at the cottage. Overall the cottage it’s self was very nice, spacious, comfortable and cozy. The location was peaceful and quiet, yet not far away from shops ect. If not familiar with the area I highly recommend a pre planned drive on dartmoor.
Lovely cottage ideal for a family. Cornwood is a very friendly village with a super community feel. The area is quiet and the owners are so helpful. Would definitely recommend.
Overall we were very pleased with Smallridge Cottage. Good accommodation although bathroom facilities a little tight for 6 adults.
Good pub in the village and easy access to Dartmoor, Plymouth and surrounds.
Lovely large cottage with all amenities in a lovely village where you can buy locally made fresh bread and eggs. Good for visit a to Dartmoor or the coast. Unfortunately there were a few issues with cleanliness and mold in the downstairs bedroom. These have been communicated to the owner who is working to resolve them. However we would stay at this property again

Our stay
I was surprised there was no welcome pack for us - good job we took most things with us. NO dishwasher tablets for machine, no washing machine powder or tablets. Just a few would’ve been helpful. Hardly any toilet paper. All but 2 downstairs windows were locked & the window keys didn’t fit them! Front door lock was sellotaped up, so we only had the back door for exit. This would NOT have met Fire safety Regulations! Downstairs smelt quite “musty” & there were clear signs of mould on the walls, especially in the bedroom downstairs. There was no evidence of the house having been cleaned, especially with COVID issues! I had to clean out 2 kitchen cupboards myself before we could put our food in them as there were lots of crumbs. We also took the trouble to take the last rentee’s rubbish to the local bins because they didn’t bother! There were at least 5 EMPTY containers of bathroom cleaner stuff & bleach in the bathroom cupboard - all left there by whoever cleans the house between visitors. A lovely cottage in a lovely setting but we won’t be renting it again I’m afraid.

We have received your review & we are always grateful for feedback as we are not local & are obviously very disappointed to read your comments & do apologise that the cottage was not up to the standard of cleaning we expect. We will be passing this on to our cleaner for her comments, we do instruct our cleaner to leave a couple of dishwasher tablets & new toilet rolls per wash room should have been provided. The set of keys available allow for the unlocking of all the windows with the same key?? there is a front door key & if it was sellotaped up this was not done by us, could have been removed (one assumes that someone did this against the wind which comes off the moor through the keyhole?)
As the cottage is over 300 years old the damp issue is difficult to rectify as the property has no damp proof course but we will be looking into options but it has been quite wet which does not help. We have tried various things but as improvements are made (new windows & doors) there is not the airflow to alleviate this totally. Unfortunately with the current situation we are unable to travel to the UK, Geoff has a lung condition & is over 70, so from a distance it is difficult to ascertain exactly what needs to be & can be done & to arrange for work to be carried out, to this end we will not be offering the cottage for rent for the time being until we can improve the issue.
We would have liked to have been informed of your concerns when you were there so we could have answered & resolved some of the issues at the time.
