About this property

Shepherd hut, wood stove, fire pit, BBQ in small woods. 1066 Country/High Weald.

Browns Shepherd Hut offers a compact, rustic stay within a small, secluded woods; a respite from hustle-bustle and chattering tech (Wi-Fi is spotty). There is a double bed, wood stove, en-suite shower and compost/waterless toilet, kitchenette and mini fridge. You can cook meals indoors, BBQ al fresco, or enjoy the fire pit opposite the hut. A small amount of fuel for stove, BBQ and fire pit is provided. For details, please read full description and see images, incl. location within the property.

The space
Our fenced in, small wooded area was probably historically a marl pit. As such, it is a dipped wooded area, and access is via a ramped walkway. This wooded area is shared with guests at Browns Shack glamping cabin, though each has separate area with own fire bowl and dining space. Non-staying guests are not permitted on the property, and we request that guests be mindful and respectful of others, including our animal friends and wildlife who share the space.

Browns Shepherd Hut features a double bed and an en-suite shower with heated towel rail and compost/waterless toilet. A wall mounted boiler provides hot water for a proper shower and all taps. Water is mains supply, so is safe to drink. Kitchenette facilities include sink, double hob, kettle, cafetiere, cutlery, crockery and utensils, also an under counter fridge.

A BBQ unit, BBQ utensils and charcoal are provided for cooking outdoors. Opposite the hut is a fire pit for exclusive use by hut guests only to allow for striking up a cosy fire on cold nights when relaxing outdoors. Incessant burning or bonfires however is prohibited.

A compact but efficient Hobbitt multi-fuel burning stove provides warming flame and heat inside the hut. A small amount of fuel for the stove, charcoal for BBQ, and wood logs, kindling and firelighters for the fire pit is provided.

Our property is surrounded by fields for grazing sheep and cattle, though you won’t have to look far to see ‘wild life’ as we also share our home with our dogs and a herd of rescue horses. You can enjoy views of the fields to the back of the property from our ‘tree house’ viewing platform, which is a shared facility with guests at Browns Shack. For the location of the shepherd hut in relation to the shack cabin, please see images provided on property layout.

We are conveniently located just 10-15 minutes’ walk to Robertsbridge village, which offers shops, a café and bakery, pubs, restaurant, pharmacy, post office, vet and overground train station. We recommend driving if you wish to enjoy the various attractions of 1066 Country High Weald AONB. E.g. Battle Abbey, Bodiam Castle, Pashley Manor Gardens, Darwell Wood, Scotney Castle and Carr Taylor Vineyard are within 15 minutes’ drive or less. While Rye, Hastings, Camber Sands beach, Chapel Down Vinery and Herstmonceux Castle are approximately 30 minutes’ drive away.

Please note we do not offer farm stay or equestrian experience. We offer, by appointment only, horse guided family and systemic constellation therapy sessions. If you’re interested, please search online for ‘horse constellations shivaun’ or contact us for more information.

Other things to note:
Leave Little Trace
Please note that Browns Shepherd Hut has electricity and mains water but is not connected to the septic tank. Eco-friendly, biodegradable body wash, shampoo, hand soap and washing up liquid are provided. If you would like to use your own, please bring only eco-friendly, biodegradable products.

Wi-Fi Connection
Wi-Fi is available on the property through external/outdoor access points. However, please note that signal is weak or spotty in the woods.

Shared Space, Mutual Consideration
We live on the property and share it with our animal friends. Please be considerate and mind appropriate noise levels and be respectful of resident wildlife as well as other guests. Non-guests are not allowed on the property. Outdoor entertainment (e.g. cinema/loud music) is not permitted. Please do not feed the horses or enter the stable yard or paddocks. Please be aware that horses can nip or bite.

Mindful Use of Fire Pit
Please be mindful of safety and considerate of others upwind when making fires. Please use the fire pit in a reasonable and moderate manner. Avoid excessive burning, e.g.
* Making a large bonfire
* Filling the fire bowl to the top or overflowing
* Constant or prolonged burning throughout the day or night

Blissful woodland hideaway
The shack and cabin were super clean and had everything we needed for an easy stay. We felt peaceful the minute we arrived, and Fran and Shivaun were friendly and helpful while also giving us the solitary space we wanted. It was lovely to be in our own little bit of woodland and I didn't want to leave the treehouse platform!

We made our 'escape to the country' adventure in 2018 when we moved from London to East Sussex. We adopted several rescue horses and our herd collaborate with us as co-facilitators in our horse-guided family and systemic constellation therapy sessions and workshops. Rural life has meant that we don't travel as much as we used to, but we still enjoy our breaks now and then to visit family and friends.

Why they chose this property

Our property offers easy access to surrounding historical towns like Hastings and Battle. This has allowed us to avail of rural life but not feel too isolated, as our village, Robertsbridge, is just round the corner and has everything we need, from a post office, hair salon, florist, phramacy, cafe to surgery. There is even a farm shop literally next door and at our doorstep. Our slice of woods, some say, most likely was a marl pit and is a reminder of the potential hidden histories beneath our feet. Our location has allowed us to have the best of many worlds -- paddocks for the horses, woods to enjoy a sense of nature's wild, unbridled ways, a comfy home for us and our animal friends, as well as being only 1 hour and 30 mins' drive or so from London.
