Region: From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain’s best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Town: Aberdour is a mediaeval seaside community located across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh, with its main street just inland and narrow alleyways connecting it to the village's coastal section. Originally built up around the harbour where the Dour Burn meets the River Forth, the village was actually two: Wester Aberdour and Easter Aberdour, but the railway brought the two together at the end of the nineteenth century. Aberdour Castle, which dates from the 12th century, is one of Scotland's oldest remaining stone castles. The site is now administered by Historic Scotland, and visitors can explore the walled garden and terraces, as well as the unusual beehive-shaped dovecot, which the Douglases added to throughout the ages.
