About this property

A large artistic, quiet flat within a converted Scottish chapel

The apartment ranges over two floors. The ceilings are high with two tall church windows letting in plenty of light to the high ceiling living room. The chapel has two dedicated bedrooms offering comfortable king-size beds. But you can choose to sleep on a king bed sitting on a mezzanine floor overlooking the lounge.

The property has its own private entry and outside parking just outside. The quirky layout of the building and its double height ceiling is enhanced by its theatrical interior designed by your host Jeanette, a textile artist, hat and theatre costume designer.

The chapel offers you the space you need to relax and get away from it all. It sits in the quiet town Newburgh with its view over the Tay and its many beautiful walks - perhaps ambling beside the River Tay or taking a more vigorous walk into the surrounding hills.

30 minutes drive away is the town of Falkland, well known for Falkland Palace. Build in the early 1500, this royal dwelling was once the country residence of the Stewart kings and queens as they hunted in the nearby forests. A short distance to the west is another beautiful old town St Andrews, the home of golf and one of the oldest universities in Scotland. South from the town is East Neuk, the Fife Kingdom's coastal region with its old fishing villages and stunning views of the Firth of Forth.

About the host

Host profile image
My name is Jeanette. I was born in East Berlin and trained in costume design and Millinery, later on moving into textile art. I worked all over the world and eventually settled. in Newburgh, Scotland some 18 years ago. Together with a partner I set up a successful international textile design school here in the Chapel. Although the school no longer runs I continue to design hats and textiles. I set up a small hat museum in the middle of the Chapel. I'm happy to show you around!

Why they chose this property

I have lived in Scotland for some 30 years. I'm been lucky to do art and design projects across this beautiful country - from a bustling Edinburgh to the sound of crashing seas in Shetland island. I came to Newburgh as Artist-in-Residence for a nearby art centre. I fell in love with the town and, well, here I am today...

What makes this property unique

The property is quirky. It still presents itself as a chapel - though it ceased being used a place of worship well over a 100 years ago - and you are reminded of its past when staying in the apartment with its tall church windows and a sense of calm and quietness that pervades the space.

The Gallery experience has been created using textile art and designs I've created over the years. It creates a space that some have described as unique and a place for calm reflection - a gentle space that lets you get away from the hustle and bustle of life.
