Experience the charm and character of Penmellyn House, a unique Grade II listed home designed by the famous Arts and Crafts architect William White. Dating back to 1860, the property maintains many of its period features both inside and out. Meanwhile, beautiful antique furniture and tasteful art create an uplifting yet cosy space. Sitting amongst delightful grounds, revel in your very own organic vegetable garden, baby orchard and wildflower meadow - there is so much to be enjoyed.
The Space:
This exceptional house for 14 has it all. A unique history is found in every corner, from the tiled staircase to the arched doorways, original windows and window etchings from the 1890s. Find ample space for all to spread out and relax, comfortable furnishings, modern finishes and a stunning garden to soak up the gentle rhythm of nature. It’s perfect for family gatherings, group celebrations or simply for peaceful weekends beside the sea.
On the ground floor, you’ll find three large reception rooms, a contemporary kitchen and breakfast room, plus a utility room with a WC. There’s everything you need to rustle up delicious homecooked feasts or, for celebrations, why not bring in a private chef to do it for you? Once you’re full, retreat to your two living rooms - both as cosy as each other. Get the fire roaring as you settle into the deep sofas with a drink in one hand and a board game on the go.
When it’s time to rest, follow the staircase upstairs to find seven bedrooms spread over two floors. All with high-quality linens and sumptuous beds. The master bedroom boasts a four-poster antique bed, pretty views out over the garden and an en-suite bathroom with a shower and bath. Further along the hallway, there are two additional double bedrooms and a bunk bedroom (suitable only for children). A stylish family bathroom is shared, with a luxurious waterfall shower, plus there is a separate cloakroom to boot. The second floor, once the servants’ quarters, is now three double bedrooms. There is an additional family bathroom and a separate shower room to ensure maximum comfort for all.
One of the real highlights of Penmellyn House is the grounds, with its large lawn that’s ideal for games as well as a patio table and chairs for alfresco dining. It’s hard to pull yourself away from this beautiful home, but there’s so much to offer in this wonderful pocket of Cornwall. The sparkling north coast is a short drive away with its popular surfing beaches, picturesque harbour towns and excellent foodie ties. Meanwhile, walkers will be in heaven with long country stomps possible right from the door.
Dogs are welcome with fee of £20 per dog. If you are planning to bring more than 2 dogs, please enquire with us first.
Guest Access:
Guests have access to the whole house and gardens.
The Neighborhood:
Penmellyn House is surrounded by the beautiful Cornish countryside, so all you’ll hear is the gentle hum of nature all around. You can enjoy long walks straight from the door or head to the coastline to pick up the famous South West Coastline. The town of St Columb Major is a great base to explore the north and south coasts of Cornwall. In the local area, you’ll find the Classic Air Force Museum, as well as the Lappa Valley Steam Railway.
Mawgan Porth and Porthcothan, two of our favourite beaches, are just 10 minutes away and provide the perfect spot for a sunny beach day. The surfing meccas of Newquay and Watergate Bay are also reachable in 14 minutes, offering superb beaches and rolling waves. The vibrant Newquay also has a popular family zoo, an aquarium and plenty of shops and restaurants to whet your appetite. Equally, nearby Padstow is known for its picturesque offering with boutique shops, restaurants and galleries. Plus, you can book a boat trip and fish for local mackerel - you may even spot a local dolphin or two if you’re lucky.
This pocket of Cornwall is brilliant for cyclists too, with the renowned Camel Trail running from Padstow all the way to Wadebridge and Bodmin. Along the way, you can stop off at the wonderful Camel Valley vineyard which is home to some of the UK’s best wine. Discover more local tips and tricks in our Guest Guide, which is available upon booking.
Getting Around:
Due to the remote nature of Cornwall, we would recommend bringing a car. There is free parking for 4 - 5 vehicles on the driveway.
Other Things to Note:
The property dates back to the 1800s so the top floor bedrooms do have restricted height and narrow hallways.
Dogs are welcome with a maximum of two (please enquire for special requests). It is on the condition they are not allowed on the soft furnishings or in the bedrooms, not left in the property unattended and any dog poo cleaned up in the garden.
The BBQ is available for use from April to October.

The property itself was beautiful, with lots of space. However, The furniture was outdated and the cleanliness was not upto the mark. Unfortunately we had an incident with the electricity tripping and although we put all the dishes in the dishwasher before leaving, we could not turn the dishwasher on. The owners were very easy to reach. There are positives but overall, some improvements needed.
