About this property
The 1853 Billiard Room Suite at Lansdowne 10 minutes from downtown!
Brick dependency built circa 1853 on the grounds of Lansdowne, a former country estate which became a cotton plantation in the 1870s until 1960, three miles from downtown Natchez. The main house retains its original furnishings as well as furnishings from other antebellum Natchez homes such as Longwood, the Towers and the Shields Town House.
The guest rooms were originally a billiard room and office and a governess’s room and school room. The Billiard room is now a spacious bedroom with comfortable seating area, furnished with a queen sized four poster bed, a large single day bed and an armoire with mirror, plus remote-controlled heating, cooling and celling fans, and Wi-Fi plus TV with Netflix, Amazon, Starz and more. Adjoining the bedroom is a full kitchen and dining area fully stocked with pots, pans, glasses, tableware and serving dishes. The updated bath has a large tiled walk in shower and plenty of closet space. Your view from the covered brick gallery encompasses a beautiful green lawn with stately oaks, pines and magnolias, and azaleas, camellias and roses.
Guest access
Guests have access to the much of the 120-acre property. You can stroll through gardens in the 10-acre yard, relax in a hammock, fish in the pond, or walk through the woods and fields where you’ll see herons, owls, wood ducks, pileated woodpeckers and occasionally foxes and wild turkey.
Interaction with guests
One of the current owners, a descendant of the original builders of Lansdowne, lives in the main house and will welcome you into the great hall for a tour of the house.

About the host
Hosted by Margaret Marshall Colson (Marsha)

The owners of Lansdowne are fifth generation descendants of George Matthews Marshall and Charlotte Hunt Marshall who built the house in 1853 on land presented to them as a wedding gift by Charlotte’s father David Hunt. Charlotte’s great grandfather Robert Dunbar bought the property and lived there in the 1780s and Lansdowne is built on the foundations of his house.
Margaret Marshall Colson (Marsha) will be your primary contact and your hostess. Marsha and her sister and first cousins grew up at Lansdowne with their parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents in the 1950s when Lansdowne was still a working cotton plantation. As children, we played all day in the woods and bayous (the local term for creeks or ravines.) Our family have always loved nature and enjoy walking in the woods and fields, picking muscadines, blackberries and dewberries, and spotting pileated woodpeckers, wood ducks, red-tailed hawks, great horned owls and cuckoos.
Our children and grandchildren grew up spending holidays and summer vacations here and are as committed as we are to preserving Lansdowne for our family, friends and visitors to enjoy. Lansdowne has been open to the public for tours since 1931 when the Natchez Pilgrimage tour of historic homes began.

Why they chose this property
Lansdowne is one of the few antebellum homes in the Natchez area that has its original furnishings and is still owned and occupied by direct descendants of the original builders. The home is filled with portraits, photographs, family mementos and the memories of all our family who have lived here - their love and laughter, holidays and parties, lazy summer afternoons and cozy winter evenings. Come visit us at Lansdowne and make some new memories of your own!
