About this property

Wow sea-view! walks, cliffs, wildlife - spacious contemporary home

Relax, Recharge and Reconnect.

Set on the edge of the Isle of Skye’s stunning Trotternish Peninsula, Ceol Na Mara (pronounced ‘kyol’ and meaning Music of the Sea) is a welcoming retreat where you can relax, cook with a view and reconnect with nature in eco-house comfort and style.
From the house, you’ll have uninterrupted views across The Minch, with changing light, coastal weather and dramatic skies creating a constantly shifting backdrop. Inside, we’ve designed the space to be calm and inviting, a place where you’ll know you’re on Skye every minute of the day. We have a thoughtfully designed and well-equipped kitchen - you’ll be cooking on an island on an island! Everything is set up to help you feel at home.

Step outside and you’re surrounded by Skye’s raw beauty. Wander along cliff paths, follow ancient trails, and let the pace of the island slow you down. The Skye Trail passes just beyond the house - ideal for intrepid walkers. The night sky is awesome, and if the conditions are right, you can catch the Northern Lights dancing across the Minch right ahead of you.

You’re in the heart of a landscape shaped by legend and time. Visit the iconic Old Man of Storr, hike through the surreal terrain of the Quiraing, or spot dinosaur footprints at Staffin Beach. Rubha Hunish is a 75 minute walk away, offering breathtaking views to the Outer Hebrides.

We’re regular visitors to the island for more than 12 years and we’re delighted to provide our guests with plenty of thoughtful recommendations and favorite places to eat. Whether you're exploring or simply exhaling, we invite you to make Ceol na Mara your own retreat and enjoy the quiet joy of simply being here.

Ceol na Mara is our own personal retreat, we’ve poured a lot of love into it. We hope you feel that during your stay.

First ones in, and we already want to come back! Chris and Luisa have been brilliant hosts. Very communicative and helpful with suggestions for first time guests of the Highlands. There are guides and maps and helpful binoculars to watch birds. The sheep grazing in sight were lovely. The place was immaculate and fully stocked. Be prepared to bring food supplies en route. The kitchen was easy to navigate and accommodated all of our food stuffs. Our stay was fantastic and we enjoyed every step of the experience. Our gratitude to the wonderful hosts!!

About the host

Hosted by Chris & Luisa Pullin

Host profile image
We are Chris & Luisa and we've been regular visitors to Skye since 2014. We first came to Balmaqueen in 2021 and fell in love with its serenity, the only sounds were the waves and the birds. Our home here is our peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of life down south. Photographer Graham Niven has helped to show our home at its best.

Why they chose this property

Wherever we’ve been in the world, living on an island is always special, the Isle of Skye especially so. The ‘North End’ – as the Trotternish peninsular is known – has much to offer, with walks from the door, tall basalt cliffs, sea-stacks, bird-life. The Skye Trail passes along the shoreline just below the house.

Away from busy Portree, the only traffic on the road will be the crofter and the postman. Being away from the stores and bars (nearest 6 miles) requires you to plan ahead, so your time here is more about slowing down and appreciating what’s on the doorstep.

What makes this property unique

We designed Ceol na Mara to make the best of its position just above the sea. The weather plays an important part of staying here – one day, the waves crashing on the rocks and the next, sun sparkling off the water. Cooking with that view is such a pleasure! Looking inland, the Trotternish Ridge is right there in front of you, disappearing into the clouds, ever changing.

You have all of this, while cossetted in a lovely warm and quiet space, free to enjoy the peace and the beauty of the island.
