Escape to the edge of the Solway Firth and discover Redgauntlet, a luxurious coastal retreat for couples and families seeking space, serenity and spectacular sea views. Sleeping up to four guests in two inviting double bedrooms, this newly refurbished ground-floor dwelling forms part of a magnificent 260-year-old longhouse in the peaceful hamlet of Skinburness, just two miles from the Victorian seaside town of Silloth. Set right beside the sea, Redgauntlet offers a truly immersive coastal experience. At high tide, watch waves crash dramatically against the rocky sea wall; on calmer days, enjoy sweeping views across the Solway Firth towards the Scottish Criffel Hills. Nature lovers will be captivated by the abundance of wildlife on your doorstep. Herons, Curlews and Oystercatchers frequent the shoreline, while rare Sea Eagles, porpoises and even sea otters have been spotted in the surrounding waters. With minimal light pollution, Skinburness is also a magical place for stargazing, and when conditions are just right, the Aurora Borealis can often be seen dancing across the night sky. The sunsets here, famously admired by J.M.W. Turner, are simply unforgettable. Steeped in history, the longhouse was originally built so fishermen could beach their boats and salt their catch. It later became The Greyhound Inn, a notorious 18th-century smuggling haunt and the inspiration behind Sir Walter Scott’s novel Redgauntlet. Today, this historic building has been thoughtfully converted into private dwellings, with Redgauntlet offering a stylish blend of character and modern comfort. Inside, the light-filled living and dining area boasts dual-aspect windows framing breathtaking sea views, a 50” wall-mounted Smart TV and breakfast bar seating for four, perfect for relaxed mornings together. The well-equipped kitchen includes an electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, air fryer and slow cooker, making family meals effortless. The master bedroom features a king-size bed, sea views and its own Smart TV, while the second bedroom offers a cosy small double. The family bathroom includes a bath with shower over and heated towel rail. Fast fibre Wi-Fi, gas central heating, bed linen and towels are all included for a comfortable stay. Step outside to your private garden and raised decking area, complete with Adirondack chairs overlooking the Firth. Please note there are two internal steps leading to the private garden and four steps with a handrail to the decking area. As evening falls, gather around the fire pit on log seats with a hot drink and listen for bats overhead. With direct beach access just two minutes’ walk away and miles of coastal paths to explore, Redgauntlet is a haven for walkers, cyclists and families alike. Peaceful, atmospheric and rich in heritage, Redgauntlet promises a truly memorable coastal escape.
