Are you searching for a mountain getaway location with things to do, such as Golf, lakes, pontoon rentals, canoes, paddle boards, a lake beach, tennis, hiking trails, and playgrounds? Bring the entire family and your pup!
Big Canoe is 1.5 hours from Atlanta, so you can experience a day excursion in the city. PLEASE NOTE: Big Canoe operates like an al la carte country club. Please be aware, the amenities at Big Canoe charge a fee and they are not "free." Big Canoe is a resort and has a "Country Club" feel and has to charge fees to provide the services. Of course, hiking, the scenery, and the parks are free!
You can have morning coffee while sitting on our expansive deck, watching deer graze in the woods and squirrels jump from tree to tree. If you feel particularly adventurous, you can take a morning hike on one of the trails just behind the house.
After your morning hike, enjoy a day at the resort pool while participating in lake activities such as paddle boating, canoeing, or sliding down the rock slide! Lake Sconti has a beach and large inflatable toys for the kids.
If hiking is not your thing, but you like to play tennis, you can choose clay, hard, indoor, or outdoor courts! Lake Petit is stocked with fish for a great fishing adventure. Be sure to stop by the clubhouse to get your fishing license.
Would you like to play golf instead? Big Canoe offers 27 holes of golf at reasonable rates in a stunning setting.

A few more casual restaurants nearby offer Mexican, Italian, and American food menus.
Suppose you want to drive for a few minutes. In that case, you can go to downtown Dahlonega to enjoy dinner, a charming shopping and indoor bar music scene, or drive a few minutes in the other direction to enjoy outlet mall shopping, Walmart, Home Depot, and many chain restaurants as well as independently owned and operated dining establishments. Blue Ridge is 45 minutes away.
Visit Amicalola Falls, a beautiful hiking trail and natural site along the Appalachian Trail just a few minutes away. After Amicalola Falls, check out Gibbs Gardens, a lovely and colorful botanical garden just minutes from the house.
If you are interested in going to Atlanta for sporting events or shopping, the city is about 1.5 hours away. Still, the northern suburbs, such as Alpharetta and Marietta, can be reached in about an hour by car.
The view from our home is mainly wooded with a large, flat, tree-filled backyard. In the fall, you can see the peaks of the mountains through the trees. The driveway leading up to the house is long and mostly flat. The home sits off the road, so there is no worry about traffic. There is enough parking for four vehicles in the driveway. The parking area is directly in front of the house. A guest house is completely hidden in the back but shares a walkway on the deck with the home.
We offer the main and guest houses as separate accommodations. However, if you would like to stay in both, we can offer a discounted rate if they are both available. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
Our home has five bedrooms, and four of the bedrooms have queen beds; one has a full-size bunk bed on the bottom and a twin bunk bed on top. Two full bathrooms, located on the first and second floors of the home, are split between two bedrooms. The third bath is private and is in the master bedroom. Three full baths give ample opportunities for showering after a long day at the rock slide, a fall hiking day, or a day on the golf range. The guest house has one bedroom, one full bathroom, a kitchen, a dining area, and a great room. This is an excellent opportunity to separate the teens from the crew or offer a quiet place for the grandparents to sleep away from the rest of the activities.
We have multiple seating areas to enjoy your meals—one formal dining area, a breakfast nook that seats four, and a bar area. Our home will comfortably seat all house guests to enjoy meals together. The guest house also has a dining room with a dining table and a bar with three bar stools.
The kitchen has granite countertops with white-painted wood cabinets. The appliances are modern, primarily stainless steel, and the kitchen is well equipped with all the supplies you need to cook and enjoy time together as friends or family. If your idea of entertaining includes grilling outside, we have a gas grill on the deck ready for that family gathering!
Each bedroom has quality bed linens, a high-definition TV, and bath towels supplied.
Parking space is provided for up to four cars.
Big Canoe Resort Community offers many activities within the resort, including golf, tennis, lakes, a lake beach, canoe and boat rentals, a rock slide for the kids, a blow-up water slide for the kids, and an indoor pool with a fitness facility as well as two outdoor pools. Please note that several outdoor activities incur a charge from the resort and are not included in the home rental price. We really enjoyed our stay. With hiking trails, waterfalls and nearby boat rental, we enjoyed spending time our kids. The owners were quick to respond when we had questions.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this house and the Big Canoe resort area. There is a lot to do within the resort and many fun towns and mountains to explore near by. From waterfalls, German inspired towns, the Appalachian Trail, quaint city squares, the resort pools, and the amazing views, our family had a terrific vacation. The house was clean and comfortable and the communication with the owner was great, she was very responsive and helpful.

Great weekend get away for our annual family trip. The house was beautiful just like the pictures showed and had everything we needed! Beautiful views and even got to see some pretty deers while on our hike. The owner was very gracious and responsive to all of our questions. Adding this area to our trip list!

Thank you Kim! We appreciate your comments and are glad you had a nice visit.
Kimberly, our host, responded to our questions promptly and clearly. The property was exactly as advertised and accommodated our group of ten, ages 4 to 75, comfortably with plenty of room for privacy. The area was quiet and private with easy access to the lakes and hiking trails. Thank you, Kim!

Mice; Cleanliness issues
The house provides good sleeping space for a larger group, especially with the additional guest house. While there isn’t a view necessarily, the surrounding yard is perfect for exploring or a game of Capture the Flag. Unfortunately for our group, though, the house had a few cleanliness issues. First, there were mice. The first night, we discovered mouse droppings in the pillow cases on one of the beds. On subsequent nights, what appeared to be dog food kept appearing in the beds. We figured out it was dog food, which evidently mice hoard. Because the food kept appearing, that means the mice were putting it in the beds throughout our stay. Some of us came home with flea bites, likely acquired from the mice living in the beds. The coffee maker was filled with mold, which we thoroughly cleaned with boiling water and multiple washes. The first night we also discovered one of the beds did not have sheets. The owners were very responsive and drove sheets up to us and they did give a small refund for the issues.

Allison, I informed you of the newly discovered mice. See the cut and paste of my email communication below:
Hi Allison, I hope you got through the gate and to the house. The cleaner notified me that she found evidence of a mouse in the house. Considering the house is in the woods, it happens. I'm letting you know because we placed some mouse traps yesterday. Please let me know if you have any problems. I apologize! Hopefully, our unwelcome visitor already left.
I would have gladly canceled your stay and refunded your money if you had requested it. The house is in the woods where lots of mice live. Immediately after you left we scheduled a company to come out and do an exclusion to completely exclude all potential entry points to the house. Mice can find their way into a home looking for food and water if there is a penetration anywhere. I did ask the cleaner about the lack of sheets and she claimed that she put the sheets on the bed herself (she has a helper), but even though she claimed she had put the sheets on the bed, my husband made a trip to Walmart at 10:00 at night, purchased new sheets, and drove three hours round trip to provide you with fresh new sheets. I gave you an unrequested refund and I tried to contact you a couple of times to before asking my husband to drive up, and this was your response:
I’m so sorry I didn’t see all your messages yesterday. We were having a blast down at the Beach Club and I didn’t check email to see you had messaged me. Thank you for sending your husband with sheets and for the refund! That was a long drive and very sweet of him! We are having so much fun! Having the guest house to put the girls at night and the boys upstairs is perfect for our needs. We gather in the living room at night to play games, which is what we were doing when your husband arrived. We are making great memories!
I"m not sure what else we could have done to remedy your issue. Mice finding their way into the house in the woods searching for food and shelter does not mean the house was not cleaned before you arrived, and I informed you, but there was no time between the cleaners finishing and your arrival to do the exclusion. Again, I would have been happy to refund your stay had you asked. We could not have done more than we did except to cancel your stay, but it did not seem appropriate to not give you the option.
I really don't know what else we could have done to rectify the problem without canceling your stay.
We used this for a business retreat for our non-profit board. It got the job done. The kitchen was pretty small, but everything worked. There were some quirks (like the back slider not opening). But furniture was comfortable, location was relaxing (once we found the place). And Kim (the owner) was especially responsive when we had trouble getting in the gate and with some power issues when we first arrived. She immediately answered our calls and got everything squared away.
Because we were working, it would have been good to have the wi-fi code posted somewhere, but we figured it out and all was good. There is also a bird at one of the 1st floor bedroom windows that is either nesting or after something there -- because he (or she) pecks the window sill early in the morning.
Overall, it was a roomy space with plenty of places for everyone to sleep in a beautiful, relaxed setting.
First time to Big Canoe and won't be our last! The owner was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely rate her 5/5! The house was exactly as described. Clean, comfortable and relaxing. For those who haven't been to Big Canoe before, read the descriptions of other properties, the roads are very narrow, steep and winding. The driveway of this house is easy to use which is a huge plus! Due to the road conditions we opted to dine in each night and not try and brave the narrow roads in the dark, that being said the only thing I might offer to the owner is to update the kitchen items, pots and pans are old and not in the best shape, same with the knives etc, (we almost ruined Christmas dinner as we couldn't carve the roast beef!!!) Some new bath towels may be helpful as well, as the ones we had seemed at the end of their service life. All in all a great Christmas vacation and this won't be our last time visiting this area! We loved it!
The house was ver nice. Loved the neighborhood. We saw deer in the yard every day. It was very quiet and peaceful. The owner was great to work with. Amenities are expensive but we were prepared for that. It was a great vacation
The house is beautiful as is the view. It was pretty well stocked but we did have to buy toilet paper and paper towels. I slept in the mater bedroom and the bed was comfortable. Wifi was adequate (password is on the Router in the master bedroom). Communication with the owner was very quick although most thing were not fixable for our stay.
The listing when I booked, had a picture of an outside pool with no caption, which we assumed was at the house. The next picture showed an indoor pool with the caption letting you know it was at the swim club. My boys saw the pictures of the inflatables at the lake and couldn’t wait to get there. Big disappointment as the lake, inflatables, and rock slide were closed for renovation or maintenance the entire stay. The outside pool is also at the swim club and you have to pay $6/per person per day to use it. The PS3 did not work (another disappointment for the boys. The grill did not work and the grate was covered with mold (don’t know if that’s a normal thing that happens in Georgia). Nothing to do at the house so we spent quite a bit of money doing things away from the house.
Amicolola Falls was beautiful, we rented a pontoon boat one day ($425ish for 4 hours), and went to Helen Water Park one day. All-in-all, we had a great vacation but if you put all your vacation money into the house thinking you have all you need there and won’t have to try to find things to do everyday, it could be disappointing.

Sherry, yes, unknown to us, the lake with the inflatables was drained due to a leak in the dam. Unfortunately, I was in CA during this time and did not know until after your stay. The place was very busy during the summer. Someone before you did mess up the playstation, and again we only discovered it after your complaint and your stay. The outdoor pool was never advertised as our personal pool. There are no private pools in the entire resort. Normally, we do supply several roles of toilet paper for each bathroom and one role of paper towels, but maybe not enough for a week stay for a lot of use. I am sorry your boys were disappointed in the lake inflatables. I would have mentioned it to you if I knew of the problem. Big Canoe is a great place to get away and enjoy nature , play golf or tennis and to relax while using the amenities. There is a charge for use of the amenities on a per use basis. I can understand why the young boys were bored. Without the inflatables and rockslide I agree, its not an action-packed vacation with something different to do every day for young children. I regret your boys did not have as much fun as they might have had in a more active location. I hope you find a more suitable locale for them the next trip.
We loved the house! It was clean and in a beautiful location. We frequently saw deer in the back yard and could watch from the large deck. Had everything we needed and worked out perfectly for our family. There was a man that lived on premises that was extremely helpful with ideas of things to do in the area, very nice. The property manager quickly responded to any questions we had. We really enjoyed the area and the home and would consider returning for another vacation.

The only downside to our trip was that the gate didn't have the names of our parties and wouldn't let them in. But that was solved immediately with a phone call to the owners.

Thank you for your stay and my apologies about the gate. I must not have hit “save” on the app. I will be more careful to double check next time!
Enjoyed our stay for a much needed family getaway. Enjoyed the open concept for main living area. Met all of the requirements we were looking for in a house. Great location to marina, lake, pool & golf.

This was a great spot for a quiet get-away for the long weekend. Everyone had plenty of space. Excellent communication with the property manager as well!
Had a great stay here with 9 people over Thanksgiving HOliday. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out. We saw about 12 deer just walking through and around the yard. There is a separate house on the property but the tenants keep the cars off to the side so there’s plenty of parking and they were not intrusive at all.

About the host
Hosted by Kimberly Schindler
We are Ron and Kim, and we live nearby in Alpharetta, GA. We have four adult children and we enjoy traveling and spending time with our family and friends. We have owned the home in Big Canoe for 17 years. We have spent much time up at Big Canoe making frequent trips to Home Depot and Lowes picking out renovation material and working on projects. We manage to enjoy taking nice walks in the woods and enjoying the outdoor activities.
Why they chose this property
When the children were younger, we really enjoyed taking them to "The Big Canoe House" to get away for the weekends and some holidays. They loved going down the rock slide and having sleepovers with friends. As time went on, we no longer used the house since the kids felt hanging out with friends where the "action is" was more fun than a weekend at Big Canoe. We ended up renting the house full-time for several years. Eventually, we decided to transform the home into a resort rental. We spent several months rehabbing, including installing granite kitchen and bath counters, stainless steel appliances, refinishing the hardwood, installing new carpet in the upstairs bedrooms and hallway, and luxury vinyl flooring three of the bedrooms on the main floor. This home is great for larger family gatherings, as well as a weekend getaway for several couples. The guest house is a special feature as it allows more space, but private space for extended families and friends. The great room provides a central space in the middle of the house and is perfect for when everybody is joining together at the end of the day to enjoy a meal together.
What makes this property unique
Our house is located five minutes from the center of Big Canoe, where all of the fun amenities are located. The house sits off the road and provides parking for about four, maybe five cars. The house has an adjoining but unattached guest house that looks like a little Ginger Bread House and shares the same expansive deck as the main house.
Our home is located very near several walking trails within a five-minute walk. There is a creek that runs behind the house, and the creek runs into Lake Petit, which is also within walking distance of the house. Lake Petit has a marina with boat rental available and availability for fishing with a permit purchased from the POA. Visit our home and enjoy a few days' breaks from the grind of the city!
Our home is older construction but has wood beams in the ceiling, vaulted ceilings in nearly every room, and nice custom touches such as built-in bookcases and a stone fireplace. If you are looking for a super Luxury home to rent for almost $1,000.00 per night, in Big Canoe, well, our home is probably not it. But, if you are looking for a very nice, clean, well-decorated home in Big Canoe that will sleep many guests at an affordable rate with a touch of luxury, you have found great value.
