Historic pet friendly cabin with shooting range, and ATV trails on 80 acres.
** Please note Disclaimers at bottom**
The Catlett Gap Homestead is a hand hewn log cabin sitting on 82 acres nestled in a valley approximately half way between Winchester VA, and Berkley Springs WVA. Pet friendly, with room to roam, camp fires, and ATV trails; The cabin pre-dates the civil war and was a homestead originally deeded to the Catlett family; some of whom still live in the area. At one point the cabin is mentioned in records of confederate troop movements, and apparently Stonewall Jackson himself spent a night inside the cabin during a snow storm. That being said, there are certain creature comforts such as a smart TV, Wi-Fi, HVAC, fireplace, BBQ pit, fire pit, satellite radio, bathroom, computer station, and fully stocked modern kitchen. Outside burning is only permitted in the camp fire, or the BBQ area and only when risk of forest fire is low. It has 2 bedrooms and a couch and love seat, and can sleep up to 7 with 2 guests on an air mattress. Other in-door amenities include a wood stove, a small library of the local wildlife, and other classic novels. There is also a covered front porch with rocking chairs and a dart board. Because of the local area, there are lots of fun activities to do year round. For example, in the summer, fishing is great and there are many places near by. In the winter, Whitetail ski resort is only 50 minutes away, and staying at the cabin and driving there is cheaper than staying at the resort. Cacapon State Park is only 5 miles away and has hiking trails as well as horse back riding, fishing and swimming. Berkley Springs has spas and antique malls as well as good restaurants. Winchester has a zoo that specializes in exotic animals. There is a Food Lion as well as a gourmet butcher shop in Berkley Springs, and there is a new super Walmart in Winchester, depending on if you go north or south. Please note, renters must be at least 21 years of age to book this property. Also please note that the staircase is steep and narrow and not handicap accessible, however the bathroom is.
Animal Disclaimer: Given that this is a pre-civil war log cabin you are bound to encounter pests such as bees, fruit flies, ants, and house flies in the summer and stink bugs year round. These are virtually impossible to control. Fly swatter is on the fridge. There is ant/wasp spray in the bottom left cupboard. Bring bug spray in the summer for mosquitoes. You may see the occasional mouse or black snake. But you also may see the occasional box turtle or toad. Toads like to hang out on the patio at night in the summer. Think of it as glamping. If you don't like bugs or animals, you've been warned :-)
Liability Disclaimer: Use of a fire arm while on the property is solely the responsibility of the guest/tenant. In addition, the use of any ATV or other vehicle while on the property is solely the responsibility of the guest/tenant. The owner shall not be held liable for any casualty or loss of any kind. Any harm that befalls the tenants, their guests, or the neighboring property owners and their associates is solely the responsibility of the tenant.

The cabin was amazing, very rustic, it had everything that we could need to be comfortable, the shooting range was a great extra feature, we will definitely return.
Great cabin, well-maintained, great options and very secure. Pet-friendly, the options were great and I even recommended this rental to my friends and family.I do plan on renting this cabin again in the future.

For having a supposed 82 acres the cabin and shooting range are about 100ft from a highway with constant noise, someone drove by in a truck on the property about 20 yards beyond the target range luckily we where not shooting, its a decent spot for a more rugged group someone looking for a newer more modern place will be disappointed
It was a lovely cabin with a cozy atmosphere. The shooting range was fun and theres a gas station right down the road if you need something. The host was nice and communicates well. 10/10 would stay again.
Very peaceful and relaxing getaway for my family! Beautiful property and home... Just as described in the listing. Highly recommend! I would like to note I gave 4/5 on cleanliness because the property could definitely use a deep clean/maintenance
Nice cabin with great property. Endless things to do if your into the outdoors. Relatively close to all stores for being a pretty remote cabin. Would definitely recommend. Will be returning in the future.
We had the absolute best time at the cabin. My son (9) had a blast riding his atv on the trails with us. The kids also loved feeding the fish and playing darts, and we all had fun with the shooting range. The water does have a strange smell, but it’s a short drive to Berkeley Springs where we filled up a bunch of jugs. The cabin was convenient to the almost heaven swing at Cacapon, and we made it on the last day the summit road was open before they shut it down for the winter. Berkley Springs brewery was a great spot too. They allow dogs inside and have pup plates. We all had a blast and can’t wait to visit again!
This was a great get away spot with some friends. Enjoyed the rustic charm of the cabin, literally had a blast using the shooting range, enjoyed the fish at the pond and a fun place to unwind. The little things were what we noticed: WiFi, fully stocked coffee bar, cold water bottles in fridge, fluffy clean towels, shampoo, soap, etc. Keep in mind, this is a cabin, and a great one, but is rustic. That was clear in the listing and exactly what we wanted. Great charm and fun to enjoy. Listing clearly states it is older, but we found it very well maintained and seemed to have some newer touches in the bathroom. It is a great place to bbq, relax, shoot and explore the area. We also went up to the nearby Cacapon State park and did some hiking and exploring as well. Lots of great outdoor activities in the area and enjoyed coming back to relax at the cabin. It isn’t too far off the road, so you do hear some traffic related noise, but it really was not an issue for us. We were making plenty of noise on the shooting range, which was nice lit laid out and super convenient. But I thought I’d mention it, as that may be important for people looking to be farther off the beaten path. Overall, loved everything about it and already thinking about making this a repeat trip! Thanks for a great stay.

Pictures didn’t show that a highway was right in front of it. Heard Semi Trucks all night long. The water had a smell. Beds hard as rocks.
Found this property to be exactly as described. We loved the rustic cabin. The property itself was fantastic. Enjoyed using the shooting range and walked along the ATV trail.
A really awesome property where you can totally relax, hike, fish, shoot...or spend some time doing a deep dive reading the incredible hunting journal. Anthony is a great responsive and welcoming host. We brought a foster dog here and it was like medicine to her soul.

LOL!!! I'm glad someone actually reads that thing. Thank you Paul!!!
Cute little cabin with lots of trails behind the cabin to walk on. Three ponds with fish. The dog enjoyed watching the fish eat. Plenty of room for a big family to hang out. A liitle noisy on the front porch due to being so close to the road, but its pretty secluded. Saw a groundhog, squirrels, blue heron, bald eagle, a toad and a box turtle all on the property. Would recommend!!

Cabin stay
We had a great time, the cabin is small but extremely comfy and cozy. The cleaning was ok, there was some dust. The 82 acres of land to hike is completely amazing!!! The owners had stock of things for cooking and home needs which was amazing. Anthony(the owner) completely amazing answering all our answers. Bathroom completely new :) too many good qualities in this cabin to mention all but I deeply recommend it!!!

Thank you Angela for the kind remarks. The new bathroom addition was just finished the end of November and we are still dealing with the clean up. The old bathroom used to be in the kitchen so there was a lot of demolition, and drywall repair. But being a 200+ year old cabin, its always a little dusty. As you can tell the bathroom addition itself is completely finished, so further dust will be eliminated.
This trip couldn't have come at a better time. We've been stuck in our house for 3 months and needed a change of scenery. The cabin was amazing - you can feel all the history as soon as you walk in. The owner thought of everything from paper products to toiletries. Our favorite part had to be the ponds. Our 13 year old enjoyed fishing and our 4 year old lab/collie mix loved to watch the fish jump out of the water when we fed them.

About the host
Hosted by Anthony Ray
Born and raised in Fairfax County, after having gone to James Madison HS four years, my friends and I had countless opportunities to visit the farm. I basically grew up there on the weekends, shooting, hunting, and fishing. Although most of my friends consider me a 'city boy' this property has a special place in my heart- and I'll never part with it. It will eventually end up being my son's when I move on.
Why they chose this property
My dad bought this place from Mr. Bob Kerns, who in turn had purchased the property from the Catlett family many decades prior-who were the original homesteaders of the valley. The Catlett family built the house by hand. Some of the tools we still have. Some of the children were even born in the house. Mr. Kerns has one son who he deeded five acres of the 90 acre parcel to and is our nearest neighbor. He still lives there and is a close friend of the family. People describe the cabin as a 'man cave' or the 'ultimate hunting lodge' or a 'rustic farm cabin'. It's small but has all the creature comforts you would care about. All of my dad's friends, my friends, and myself have trophy bucks hanging on the wall there. When we shoot a big one, it is a group decision whether we keep the head-using Boone & Crockett measurements. If the deer is worthy for mounting, it stays at the cabin. If not, but still special we do a European mount and the owner decides whether they want to take it home or not.
What makes this property unique
- Dog friendly - Gun Friendly (Shooting range) - ATV trails - Fishing in the summer - Horse trails nearby - Few neighbors
