Affordable Getaway in the Best of the Catskills - 5 minutes to Windham Mountain
This is a comfy 3-bedroom cottage perfect for unwinding with friends and family. It is small, cozy, and has a wonderful hang-out kitchen, and can fit a good-sized group with a fold-out couch in the living room. The house is located directly across the street from my mother's family home, a big historic farmhouse with hundreds of acres of property, including our fantastic private swimming hole in the Batavia creek. If you're looking for a luxury ski villa, you won't find that here - this is for those who aren't necessarily looking to spend a lot of time indoors, but rather, to have a comfy home base from which to explore and enjoy all that the beautiful, awesome northern Catskills has to offer (and for cooking up a mean breakfast or barbecue!). The house is very well stocked with all the small details you might need, and is ideal for full-season rentals.

It was a very cute cabin in a great location but we had to spend an hour or so cleaning because it was dirty. It also had a horrid smell in the basement.

Our main problem was with the dampness and musty odor. We opened all the windows to get in some fresh air, but that only helped minimally. The cellar is very damp, the dehumidifier is not hooked up and there is no door way from the kitchen to stop this dampness and odor from coming upstairs. We all developed some sort of allergy/ stuffiness from dealing with this.
The front deck was very dirty - from the chairs to the floor it made it impossible to sit out there. At night, when one had to walk from the back of the house to the front in order to open the lock box, the walkway was in total darkness. Adds to this, wetness of the sidewalk and no hand rail by the steps leading to the porch.
The inside was basically clean, but the upstairs had all kind of candy wrappers stuck into the corners and, all in all, needed a thorough cleaning. All windows are desperately in need of washing. When you’re in that lovely of a setting, you should be able to enjoy the view.
The kitchen was well stocked, and we thank you for that. But — the cottage is in dire need of upkeep and some updating. I am well familiar with house rental, but this rental does not meet standards,

Nicole - we're sorry that our place did not meet your expectations. We've had dozens of guests stay at our place and have received positive reviews, and this is the first we have ever heard any feedback regarding dampness/mustiness issues. We also did not receive any communications from you during your stay regarding any of these issues. We have a motion-sensor outdoor light that is supposed to come on automatically when a car pulls up the driveway. Had you brought this to our attention that the outdoor lights were not working, we could have tried to get our property manager over there to fix the problem - we are always very quick to respond. Finally, as regards updating of our cottage, we like (and have received compliments on) the "old fashioned" look of our place and don't wish to match the more modern look of newer houses - we feel that's part of what makes it unique.

About the host
Hosted by Daniella and Eli
We're a couple living in Brooklyn and come up to Windham often to visit my mother - her house is almost 200 years old and we both love going there to work on house projects, spend time outdoors, gardening, mushroom hunting, swimming in the creek in the summer, and just generally keeping ourselves busy and active.
Why they chose this property
We bought this house because it's right across the street from my mother's house - we took one look and loved it. My grandfather actually owned this property long ago, sold it in the 1960's after he retired, and when the opportunity came up we jumped right in.
What makes this property unique
The most unique benefit of our cute little place is of course the private creek access. But in addition to that, the Windham/Northern Catskills area itself is a really special place - the town itself is very walkable and has great shops, galleries, and cafes; there is a fantastic variety of restaurants and even a wine bar; there are tons of outdoor activities within a 30 minute drive; the school, right in the center of town, has a great playground for kids plus publicly accessible tennis courts; and not to mention beautiful geographic features like waterfalls and amazing views.
