About this property
Waterfront Cottage, The Captains Cabin is a romantic, remote spot in the PNW.
A quiet romantic waterfront home is the perfectly positioned on Pickering Passage of the Puget Sound. Famed Walkers' Landing looks across the water at Harstene Island, the view is a constant changing drama unfolding on this body of water, named after a naturalist on a Wilkes expedition. Pickering Passage flows past the mouths of Hammersley Inlet, Totten Inlet, and Eld Inlet. It is a nutrient rich area, producing oysters that grow rapidly. Come enjoy the view from the bank of Abbondanza, a property designed by artist Ray Turner, graduate of Stadium HS in Tacoma. Attending college in Washington. Oregon and California, undergraduate for four years. The next four years at Art Center College of design where he taught after graduation for many years. Enjoy the view from 34 windows and doors in the Captain's Cabin a cedar sided exterior, wrapped in pine from floor to ceiling inside. The 1950's table and chairs in the breakfast nook, boast a great view, with a fully equipped Kitchen, with retro style appliances, to compliment the beautiful barn lights, antique fixtures, and chandeliers. All the lights are on dimmers setting a romantic interior when the sun goes down. The outdoor lighting sets a mood as well as guides you to the fire pit or railing to sit under the stars and look at the sound. The bedding is all cotton, with a goose down comforter and cotton quilts. The pillows are high quality goose down. There are decks off the kitchen and master bedroom, to enjoy the sunrise, sunset and all the wonders the passage has to offer. The natural stone staircase and gravel paths will take you to the wooden railed staircase access to the beach, where you can kayak, windsurf, paddle board, fish, whatever you like to do on the water. After your water sports, or walk along the gravel beach, go up take a hot outdoor shower, soak in the claw foot tub, take a sauna, or do all three. Abbondanza is difficult to describe, it has bountiful sea life, always common to see any number of birds, including bald eagles. It is quiet, peaceful, and has an effect on you that will make you wish you could stay longer, wanting more. The sauna is a favorite building where you can enjoy a warm eucalyptus infused relaxing space. Then take a hot outdoor shower overlooking the Sound. Rock away an hour on the master deck in teak rocking chairs with your favorite evening drink. Welcome!

About the host
Hosted by Ray Turner

I'm an artist, living in Los Angeles County, Pasadena. I graduated from Stadium H.S. in Tacoma where I first fell in love the the Pacific Northwest. I moved to Pasadena after my first four years of college, to attend Art Center College of Design for the next four. After graduating from Art Center, I taught there for several years until I took a leave of absence to paint full time. I've been painting full time now for twenty some years. I love the Pacific North West, and always wanted a place on the Puget Sound since I was a boy. I purchased these properties as an art project of sorts. The location and attributes were awe inspiring for me, so I decided to build a small compound where one could sit and watch a fire, the water, the trees blowing in the wind whatever came into view. It is a peaceful, quiet place, that has the magic of the Pickering Passage, changing constantly. I can't over bill it, it is a remarkable place. The charm of the little cottages or cabins, are a comfortable addition to the natural beauty of the trees, plants, view of the water, and Harstene Island. The work we did on the interiors and exteriors are uniquely comforting. The bedding and the furnishings are high quality natural fabrics that I personally love. You won't want to get out of the beds, they are as comfortable as can be. It is my good pleasure to share Abbondanza with you. Please come be our guests when you can.
Why they chose this property
I bought and developed this because of the location and it's inherent beauty. It doesn't have a shopping center near by, nor a place to walk to a restaurant. Those accommodations are an easy drive, but what this place is, is quiet, peaceful, and remote. There are a small group of homes at the end of a road, with one way in and out. The trees are tall and old, I've also added many ornamental ones, and too many flowers and plants to count. Jasmine, clematis, and hydrangea, is climbing on all the structures, with hundreds of different flowers, that will be blooming from spring through the fall. The stars are brilliant on a clear night. I have said many times that it is magical, there have been many guests describe it the same way as well. If you're looking for peace and quiet, surrounded by trees on the puget sound with all of its wonder, this will become one of your favorite memories and places to stay.
What makes this property unique
There is a cabin with a full bathroom that can be rented with the Captain's Cabin. The Church has a lovely view of the water as well. Also wrapped in pine, wide plank floors and a six foot clawfoot tub and shower. Inquire about The Church which sleeps two adults. The outdoor shower was a surprise in that I wanted to have one for convenience when coming up from the beach. I like it so much that I use it in the rain, and snow, as well. The Sauna is also a pleasant, very healthful, during and afterward, you are without a doubt, relaxed and ready for a long nap. A couple drops of eucalyptus oil in the water bucket, a spoon on the hot rocks will send up a warm, wonderful scented steam that will set your olfactory into deja vu, never to be forgotten.
