Cozy and Bohemian space, we saw all kinds of beautiful wildlife birds, bunnies, dolphins and had lovely day trips to wildlife, refuge and cape henlopen- lovely visit all around
Sunrise from the porch is a great way to start the day, followed by a few walks in one of the many refuges and parks near-by, and ending the day with sunset in the marsh across the street.
Pretty, comfortable, and the main level of the house is accessible.
Loved this place! Very unique and fun. Great pictures on the walls, interesting books. Beach is not groomed but loved the closeness to nature! The place had a great vibe and lots of fireworks nearby on the 4th!

The Dune
Beautiful view front and back of property, nothing else!
Quiet, cozy house right on the beach. We were hoping to see some horseshoe crabs and were not disappointed. No exaggeration that we saw more crabs than people.
The views from the upper deck of the house were spectacular.
What a cute little nook at the beach. Our family truly enjoyed the private beach and quietness. It was great there was a bedroom on the first floor also.Loved it. Views of both the bay and ocean. Just perfect.
Overall, a nice, quiet place. Somewhat crowded neighborhood, but quiet nevertheless. Tranquil sea-side setting. No real beach at the house, but we went to the public beach in the state park and Reheboth. IMHO, less beds would make the place much nicer. Pleasant interaction with the owner.
It was a colder fall weekend and we wanted a change of pace. We spent all of our time at the fire pit watching shooting stars and grilling. We brought electric blankets with us. It was absolutely perfect. The house is nice and in great location to star gaze and bird watch. The owners were super responsive. I’ll definitely stay here again next fall

Outdated photos
I feel we were deceived by the images as they must be many years old. I’d suggest you look on google prior to booking. Prime hook is a great place to visit. Thorough cleaning and repairs needed to the outside for safety concerns.

It worked, but not exactly what we expected
Not exactly what we were expecting. It’s a bit older, cluttered, outdated and in need of a facelift. The owner could be more up front about linen usage and expectations. But overall, it worked for our needs.
We were torn between spending time in/near the house and the nearby wildlife refuge. The house is filled with light and art and has a ramp to the beach. The refuge is a spectacular location for bird watching.
Both the house and the refuge are quite accessible. The main floor of the house can be reached by ramp and has a bedroom, kitchen, social space, and convenient bathroom. The rest of the bedrooms are up a spiral stair, so I stayed on the mail level. Several of the trails in the refuge are accessible and quite beautiful!
To summarize: a beautiful house on top of a dune overlooking the bay, accessible and dog friendly, near an accessible and dog friendly refuge. We'll be back!
We stayed from Monday to Friday, it was extremely hot(90’s plus) every day. There were window ac units, and all of them were saying to clean the filter. Being by the ocean, I expected flies. The back decks, upper and lower, were in mild disrepair. It really just needs some love! I arrived looking for the picture of the horseshoe crab, but it was Very faded. That said, I would still go back.

Timing is important
Our first impression was fly traps everywhere. A fly trap on the coffee table covered in flies. We tried to move past that though. Then there were the stained yellow pillows. We still tried to move past that. It is a bad time (late May/early June) to be in this area due to the horseshoe crabs and flies. We loved learning about the crabs and getting to see them. But the beach was covered in their eggs and dead bodies. We continued to have a good time regardless. But it was pretty stressful having to swat flies inside the home the entire time. The final disappointment was that in the photos there appears to be a jacuzzi tub. It was not in working order as far as we could tell.
Disappointed!! This house is not set up for more than 2 or 3 people and forget about cooking or eating a big meal together. The kitchen has a total of 7 forks of various sizes, and 8 spoons, 2 were the long kind for ice cream sundaes, one was a baby spoon, and several others were various shapes and sizes. The 3 pots and 2 cooking pans we managed to dig out from the back of a dirty cabinet look like they came from Goodwill. And the entire house (except for the 2 bathrooms), including the kitchen, is entirely lit by rickety lamps that are either missing light bulbs or had bulbs that didn't work (there was only one spare bulb in the closet), and were connected by tangled up extension cords that looked like they were manufactured in the 1980s. There is no overhead lighting, which made the house very dark at night. One of the rooms had a bunch of literal junk under the bed -- exterior paint cans, bits of cardboard, electrical cords of some sort, lots of mouse droppings, etc., and looked like it hadn't been vacuumed for quite some time. I had to email the host on the morning of our trip to get the key code to the house, and later, to get the wifi password. Very unprofessional and disorganized. For the price of this rental, I expected a cleaner, well-lit space that was better appointed. (Don't even get me started on the nasty, torn pillows and filthy blankets). We didn't expect a five-star hotel, of course, but would have settled for a 3-star for the price.
Charming and cozy house. So easy to feel at home here. Perfect location right on the beach. We loved it even on a rainy weekend. We will be back!

About the host

I am a retired urban producer that has found my place as an artist and nature lover at Prime Hook! Thank you for visiting, I'd like to share my home with you.
Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge is truly a sanctuary, about as unique a place as I've ever found to simply relax. The moment my dog Stella and I exited that mad dash off the Coastal Highway for the first time we knew we were in heaven! As you slowly wind your way through farmland and 11,000 acres of un-kept marshland and you end up sitting on top of a dune. Plus your nearest bar is the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton and the nearest big ocean surf can be found at near-by, dog-friendly, Cape Henlopen State Park!
