Our large extended family of 24 spent a week there in this historical log house. PLENTY of room for all of us to eat and play games. The yard was private with a fire pit and the grandkids had fun running around. An artic blast hit but the heaters and living room fireplace kept us plenty warm! And it even snowed for us Floridians!! John was always available for any questions or concerns. And the ski resorts are very close by! Great memories to be cherished!
Wonderful view. House is beautiful. Comfortable. We wonderful fireplace.

We enjoyed time with our extended family over the Labor Day holiday. The lodge was large enough to accomadate all of us, numbering 20, comfortably. The fire pit was great for us and the neighborhood was quiet, the woods around the house secluded. The host, John, was very helpful and available. We would rent there again if the family decides to return to the area.
Great place for family and big groups. Plenty of beds and a very nice meeting room.
Very nice, very clean and plenty of room. Plenty of full bathrooms so no one was waiting to get a shower. Would highly recommend this home to all

Thanks for your kind words. It was a pleasure to be of service to your family. We'll hope to have the opportunity to do so again in the future.
Our stay at the Great Escape Lodge was fantastic! The house is a magnificent historical structure. All rooms were ready and perfect for our arrival (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, etc...all perfect). We grilled and shared stories and good laughs on the back deck. The living room was perfect for all of us to catch up after a day of activities and share our adventures. Key for us was how easy the owners made everything for our stay. They even went the extra mile to be sure we had directions to navigating the mountain and knowing where to get groceries, dinner, hiking, etc. Hospitality and flexibility were greatly appreciated. We good not have enjoyed our stay more!
This majestic Home has so many unique architectural qualities and is a great place for a big family!

About the host
Hosted by John Warthman
The Warthman Family-Kay, John, Jonathan, Josh and his wife, Natalie-own the Lodge. Kay is a long-ago retired nurse, who devoted her time to parenting and now focuses on church related activities. John is a retired real estate property management exec., who oversaw management of 17,000+ apartments, 3,800+ condominiums, 1 million+ square feet of office space and a number of home owner associations in a 30+ year career.
Why they chose this property
We bought this home when we lived in Charlotte and our oldest son was just born. We had visited the mountains during the summer and fell in love with Beech Mountain. A subsequent ski trip further cemented that feeling. During John's summers of his first school years, he lived with his grandparents in 5-bedroom converted stone barn. The Lodge reminded him of those wonderful childhood memories. With the help of his contractor brother Bob, he bought, refurbished, and expanded it as well as added a stone facade to the majority of the house during weekends for 8 months to bring his vision to fruition.
Because we've lived in GA for many years now, we've been unable to enjoy the Lodge and its peaceful setting as much as we'd like. However, over the years we've owned and operated the Lodge, we've been privileged to serve many families and groups. Many of them have returned again and again causing us to think of them as extended family. So, we derive pleasure from the enjoyment they experience as well as the relationships we've formed over those years.
What makes this property unique
The setting of the Lodge combined with materials contained within it just give us the feeling of living in another, less hurried time. However, it's just 2.1 road miles from the busy Beech Mountain Resort ski slopes. During the non-ski season, there's a large array of nearby activities and attractions available. We think it's the perfect combination of yesteryear atmosphere combined with those many nearby attractions and modern conveniences.
