About this property

Enjoy a secluded shoreline home mid-way between the 2 parts of Acadia Natl Park!

Come visit and enjoy the open layout and expansive design of our rental home! This home provides you with a unique experience of nature and her cycles of tides and wildlife in a secluded garden setting, yet you are conveniently close to attractions in the area as well as a wide variety of stores and restaurants. The floor to ceiling windows facing the bay bay allow viewing of the yard, ocean bay and the wildlife from almost every room. This allow for you to enjoy the ever changing vistas the bay because of the changing tides. You might catch the eagles, ospreys and seals feeding as the incoming tides brings in their food. At low tide when the bay empties out, the herons, and gulls feed in the exposed mudflats. The house is secluded from the road with a nearly quarter mile-long driveway, and you will have difficulty seeing any other shoreline houses from your rental home. Watch the sunrise and sunsets while relaxing on the back deck or you can get closer to the wildlife by strolling down to the nearby shoreline using the well-maintained paths and steps down to the water’s edge. There is a professional quality, full-sized billiard table located in our formal expansive recreation room that can be used with for a fee during your stay. A ping pong top can be placed on this table if you choose to play ping pong instead of pool. Please contact us about the fees at the time of your booking of this rental if you are interested in these options.

All rooms of the house have central air conditioning/heating units, and most rooms have ceiling fans. There is a bedroom with a queen bed on the first floor. On the second floor there is one bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with two twin beds. The 3 bedrooms offered do not have “en-suite” attached bathrooms. The full bathrooms on each floor are located down the hallway from the bedrooms. There is a second floor TV room and an open loft area for stretching and exercising. The kitchen is well supplied with cooking utensils and equipment. The formal dining room is spacious and inviting. There is a breakfast nook table in the kitchen area. Please be aware that this spacious rental home has rooms and furnishings that are not included in your rental. These areas include the rooms off the recreation/pool room, the basement, the garage, utility rooms attached to the garage, and the garden shed. We do not allow the use of our electric piano and the gas fireplace inserts by renters.

Off the back deck, there is a roomy screened-in gazebo with a large dining table and seating for six guests with views of the bay. It is equipped with overhead lighting and an electric power outlet. There is a propane gas grill in the gazebo you can use which allows you to grill and eat in a screened-in area shielded from the insects. On the large back deck and patio area are fully reclining lounge chairs as well as swivel deck chairs and patio tables. Explore the pristine tidal inlets and the larger bay by kayaks you can bring with you or have rented. You can only kayak when the tide is coming in or during high tide, as the bay's mud flats are exposed during low tide. There is a kayak rental company a mile down from our driveway with free delivery. Please inform us if you are thinking about kayaking off our shoreline, as we have important info about the tides and water safety. The rental is located on the shoreline of Taunton Bay which is a tidal bay, and thus the ocean water comes and goes twice daily with the tides.

The clearly marked areas of the house that are not included in your rental are locked. These rooms serve our maintenance staff’s needs, as well as storage areas for rental equipment and supplies. Base rental rates are for up to four guests only. There is a daily charge for each additional guest after 4. There are driveway cameras for security and safety purposes only.

Mount Desert Island is where the town of Bar Harbor and Acadia National park are located. The island is driven onto using a causeway which is about a 20-minute drive away from your rental. Acadia National Park's Hull's Cove Visitor center is 21 miles from the house, about a 30 min drive depending on traffic. The scenic Park Loop Road for cars and the famous carriage trails for bicycles and walking begin there. The area-wide free shuttle bus system called Island Hopper, which stops at the Visitor Center. The town of Bar Harbor with all of its restaurants, whale watching tours and craft stores is only a couple of miles further from Hulls Cove. Bangor Intl Airport is 39 miles from your rental; about a 50 min drive away, depending on traffic, which can be heavy and slow during the busy summer/fall seasons.
Acadia National Park also includes a recently enlarged sister park on Schoodic Peninsula, 23 miles away from your rental house and in the opposite direction from Acadia National Park’s Mt. Desert Island location. The Schoodic section of Acadia National Park is a less crowded than on Mt. Desert Island features 7.5 miles of hiking trails and 8.3 miles of biking/carriage roads. There is a 6 mile one-way paved loop road that goes around the entire park along the ocean shoreline with spectacular ocean views, just like the loop road on Mount Desert Island. Your rental at our place is thus conveniently located half way in between these two National Park destinations!

The house is well situated away from the traffic and pedestrian congestion and noisy distractions and 6 am Lobster boat engine noise that can come with renting on Mount Desert Island. BUT IF your family and kids want to be near the center of Bar Harbor town's bustling activity, its ice cream and restaurant offerings, craft stores and touring outfits, our rental home is not the ideal for your needs because the rental is about 24 miles (35 min drive) from the town of Bar Harbor. Our rental is conveniently close to the Ellsworth/Hancock town areas (5-7 miles) and these towns offer you a great variety of restaurants, such as Mexican, Asian, Italian, and many other restaurants and fast-food places. There are nearby larger grocery stores, pharmacies, and merchandise stores in Ellsworth only a few miles drive from your rental. There are local lobster pounds and fresh farm produce farm stands are within 3-5 miles and many more lobster restaurants are located on the drive onto Mount Desert Island.

In addition to Schoodic part of Acadia National Park, there are nearby terrific day hikes just a few miles from our rental home, such as Tunk Mountain and Schoodic Mountain that offer nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and inland, as well as other state parks further north to the Canadian Border. The Roosevelt's historical family retreat, Campobello, is located just over the Canadian border from the town of Lubec, ME. As the entry way into the Bay of Fundy, the town of Lubec is an artistic and historical place to visit and is 78 miles away or about an hour and a half drive, an easy one-day excursion from the rental. So you see, there are a lot of things to see and do near your rental, as well as a 2 hr drive away!

Wonderful Stay

We had a wonderful stay! We enjoyed many evenings outside on the beautiful patio looking at the gorgeous views of the bay! The kitchen is very well stocked, and we cooked all of our breakfasts and dinners at the house. Very conveniently located between the 2 sections of Acadia National Park. We would highly recommend and would definitely stay again if in the area!

Egypt Bay’s best

The setting, the property, the landscaping, the view and the well-equipped house exceeded our expectations! From the thick towels and spa robes, we enjoyed a resort experience. We did cook dinner one night, and breakfasts; the kitchen is very well-equipped. We particularly enjoyed the coffee and tea choices at breakfast. We loved the landscaping and watched an eagle soar overhead, humming birds and butterflies. The white admiral and viceroy butterflies danced across the hydrangeas each morning and afternoon. A true treat! And the waterbirds at low tide were wonderful to watch in the tidal pools. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us! Our stay was great.

Beautiful property

Such a wonderful place! The house was immaculate, and the property was obviously well cared for, with beautiful gardens. It is a nice, quiet spot, and we enjoyed seeing hummingbirds, butterflies, a bald eagle, and even a porcupine crossing the road leading up to the house! The owners were great about giving us information about renting kayaks and info about tides. We had a wonderful time at this property, and we highly recommend it!

Lovely secluded exclusive home

This home was lovely located in woods on the shore of a bay with an ever-changing view for your coffee each morning. Definitely someone's home who takes great care of it and provides for all the details. Perfectly located between Bar Harbor and Schoodiac Point. Everything in this house is top of the line. We enjoyed the eagle in the back yard in the pine tree and catch/release crabs. Definitely would recommend this home.

Beautiful and relaxing

We had four adults that stayed here and it was just perfect. Great proximity to Acadia, beautiful views for morning coffee and relaxing in the evening and all the little extras were provided from toiletries to dishes, spices, outdoor furniture. Super quiet and private setting. Property owners had great suggestions for restaurants. I highly recommend this property!

Great place

House was extremely clean. Backyard is very secluded and has amazing landscaping. The location is bit of a drive (45 mins) to get to all the Acadia sights. The bay behind the house was almost always mud due to the tides emptying the bay. High tide was around noon and midnight when we were asleep or out sightseeing while we were there. Nice labeling of drawers and light switches throughout the house. Well equipped modern kitchen. Tap water (from on property well) was as pleasant tasting as bottled water. The WiFi was reliable and fast enough for watching a streaming show. It’s a bit annoying that the primary suite is not setup with private bathroom but the listing is accurate. Overall it was a great place and we were thankful we stayed there.

Our first trip to Maine

This property is a vacation all by itself! We are so glad we came in spring when the flowers were in bloom because this yard is absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed sitting on the deck every day, watching the water levels rise and fall with the tide. Shaun, from Acadia 1, delivered kayaks and we were able to get them in and out of the water pretty easily between our water adventures. This multi-leveled yard has a great area for holding the kayaks between uses so they won’t float away. We used the firewood provided to have cozy campfires in the huge, beautiful fire pit. This house is stocked with everything we needed and so much more! Henry and Suzanne provided everything we could possibly need in the kitchen and bathrooms (thank you so much!) but also extras like little coolers, sunscreen, and bug spray for hiking. My son and husband thoroughly enjoyed the pool table and blue tooth speakers each evening while my daughter and I planned for the following days’ excursions in the Acadia area. We were able to see her “dream spot” called The Ravens Nest, in addition to whale watching from Bar Harbor, exploring the Schoodic peninsula, the Acadia National Park, the Granite Garden Gallery, Tidal Falls, and more thanks to the perfect location of this property right in the middle of it all. Communication with the property owners was exceptional, and we felt very welcome the whole time we were in Maine. We would LOVE to return to this property someday to enjoy this area again!

Fabulous property

My husband and our 3 adult children and their significant others stayed here for a family hiking trip in Acadia National Park and the property is scenic and serene. We only saw 1 bald eagle off in the distance so bring your own binoculars, but it was a great long weekend making incredible family memories.

A wonderful retreat.

This place was so much better than the photos promised. The beauty and the seclusion it provided was necessary for us. Watching the osprey and the other wildlife added to the serenity. The house offered all we needed and more (ping pong was played many times). Even the one rainy day we had was an enjoyable experience as it helped us slow down and relax in such a comfortable space. We would easily go back again.

Spacious Home and Charming Property

This house and the surrounding property are just gorgeous. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, with small treasures around every bend. Small garden decorations surprised us as we walked around the yard, and various lawn chairs offered a place to sit and read or just gaze at the bay. The large windows throughout most of the house allow for a great view almost everywhere you look. The location is very private with a long driveway and no other house in view. We loved everything about the house and its proximity to Acadia. We also enjoyed looking through the the books in the several bookshelves with books about the region as well as a great collection of classics! Great place to return to after a day of hiking or other activities.

Host profile image
We have lived in Maine for over 20 years, and we enjoy the nature and beauty here.
We enjoy hosting our guests and are happy have a chance to share our home with you. We want you to enjoy your stay, and upon request, we can provide information about the local area highlights, restaurants, stores, and services. We have maps of the National Park and we are happy to provide information about what the town Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park has to offer.

Why they chose this property

For us, this rental home location is so convenient to stores and dining opportunities in the city of Ellsworth and the historic town of Hancock. The area surrounding the house is safe and quiet. Hannaford and Shaws grocery stores, a Walmart Super Store, ethnic and take-out restaurants are only a 10 minute drive away in Ellsworth. The town of Hancock and Franklin are picturesque and have an interesting history, and have great dining opportunities and local attractions. Acadia National Park offers carriage roads for walking & biking, wooded hiking trails, and ocean views along the Park Loop road. The entrance onto Mount Desert Island is a 20 minute drive, and the town of Bar Harbor is 35 minute drive from your rental. Bike & kayak rentals are available in Bar Harbor as well as restaurants, brewery’s, craft shops and whale watching tours. If you have time, visit Schoodic, the sister part of Acadia National Park, located on the mainland across the bay from Mt. Desert Island. This Park also has carriage trails, a loop road along a magnificent shoreline and a visitor center. If you like fishing, one of the best lakes in Maine is Tunk Lake which is just down the road from the rental. In its deep waters reside fish such as trout, land-locked salmon, and togue. For a possible day trip, drive 80 miles to Campobello Island in Canada, the summer home of the Roosevelts. Lamoine State Park is a short distance away on Frenchman's Bay and offers tent sites and a boat launch.

Kayak rentals are also available a very short drive down the road from the house. During the 4 hour or more period of high tide, the water is deep enough and, weather permitting, you can kayak around Taunton Bay from the shore. A great nearby walking or biking option is the Sunrise Trail located in the town of Franklin that has parking access. It's a wide dirt trail that allows ATV's and bicycles and is a beautiful way to enjoy the Maine Down East coast from Ellsworth to the Canadian Border.
