Great Ocean Views! 7 Bedrooms, 5 Masters, Right on the Beach Access with Pool!
Friday Check-In/Out for Summer to avoid weekend traffic! "The Whistling Clam" (search the web for it more reviews & listings) The Whistling Clam is a 7 bedroom, 6.5 bath (5 master bedrooms) beach house directly in front of the beach access for Ocean Sands H, a private community. Located at the end of a private cul-de-sac (no through traffic or busy streets to cross with children like many other OBX locations), it has a large private pool, hot tub, rec room with pool table, and tons of deck space to enjoy the outdoors with a hammock, bench swing, and many adirondack chairs. Note that the pool is not heated, so reservations between October and Mid-March will only have access to the hot tub (and beach obviously). We also received a few complaints about cleaning in 2021 and would just like to make it clear that we have hired a new cleaning company as of January 2022 that came highly recommended and have had no complaints since. The kitchen and master bathroom were just renovated in 2021, as well as putting new floors throughout the living rooms and bedrooms. The mid-level king master bathroom was also renovated in 2022 with all new furniture for the main living room purchased as well! A rec room in the basement contains a pool table, fridge, ice maker for filling up your cooler, and TV. There are adjoining bedrooms in the basement for parents with younger kids to keep close by with custom-built bunk beds in one room and a king bedroom in the other. A large sliding barn door can either open the two rooms together or slide closed for privacy. On the second level, you'll find 4 bedrooms, a King master (bathroom remodeled in 2022), a Queen master, a master bedroom room having 2 sets of bunk beds (bathroom remodeled 2023) and another master having 2 twin beds with trundles under them (bathroom remodeled 2023). This level also has a mini-fridge and living area with a smaller sectional couch. The top level has the main living area, kitchen, dining area, and another King master bedroom. Off of this top level level is a screened-in porch with access upstairs to the crows nest. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Feel free to look for more info by searching "The Whistling Clam" and clicking the second link for our number, email, reviews, questions to the owners, and updates! Also, if you would like to have beach chairs, tents, coolers, etc. set up, please message us after booking. We can get you a discount with Corolla Beach Services! Per VRBO Surveillance Policy - we are also disclosing that there are security cameras in the carport of the property for your protection and owners' protection. No cameras are in the house or pool/hot tub area.

Awesome direct access to the beach...accommodated several families, kids, and adults...great location and amenities nearby...the top floor was spacious and comfortable, great for a lot of people...I would highly recommend this property! Owners included a special touch for us, too.
We stayed at this great property to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday! Great location. House was as described, and communication with the owners great. We had a wonderful time!
Our weekend stay was perfect!
Friday was our check in date and Alex, owner and host, was nice enough to offer early check in. We spent Friday at the beach and site seeing… weather was not great, so having the early check in was clutch!
Saturday was a beautiful day and we didn’t leave the house except to go to the beach.
The house had everything we needed. Lots of pool toys and stuff to do. -games, books, Pool, hot tub and billiards.
It was a great time -would love to go back and stay longer.
Stayed with 11 adults. Everyone had plenty of space and didn’t have to share bathrooms. A few bathrooms and the kitchen are updated which is very nice. Layout is great. We honestly didn’t even have time to use the pool table as we were enjoying the roof deck, pool and beach access. Owner is very responsive.
Stayed here 8/16-8/24. Check in process was easy! Location of the house is perfect. We rented bikes and took them to the shopping areas as a family every day. House is across the parking lot from the beach. Walk to the beach is tough because of the dune height but it’s like that everywhere. Pool area was clean and perfect for us. Only suggestion would be to install a bit taller fence so it’s a little more private. Other than that this house was absolutely perfect and we would return again.
Our family of 19 from New York had a wonderful time at the Whistling Clam. It was our first time to the Outer Banks. Between the ocean, the pool and the hot tub, we were not lacking for ways to cool off. The kids made an obstacle course in and around the pool and had a blast. There was plenty of space on the top floor together for meals and play games. The two refrigerators and the two dishwashers were wonderful features. The host was very accommodating, it was a relaxing and enjoyable week and a great way to spend time with your. Family.
We had 9 adults plus an infant in this house and it is nice and spacious. Master Bedrooms are large and roomy, there are 7 bathrooms with nice rain head showers. My only drawback is there are no real ocean views unless you’re outside the house above the 3rd floor in the birds nest. It’s still really nice but in need of some updating. The air is hard to control on all levels. One level is too hot while another is too cold. Overall we enjoyed our time!

Hi Tracie, we're sorry that you had trouble with the air - there is actually separate systems for different levels. So I'm assuming you were using only the top level one. We would've been happy to help you if you had reached out! As for the updating needs, we have been doing quite a bit to the house, but it is still a work in progress. Since 2021, we have fully renovated the top level kitchen/dining, master bedroom and bathroom, redone the floors throughout, and renovated 4 more master bedrooms.

Whispering Clam
The location was fabulous, quiet and very close to the beach. However, for the price, we were disappointed with several items - the large grill did not work very well; the clean air return appeared to have not been cleaned in several years; the deadbolt lock on the main door never worked (we notified the owner on Sunday, and he said he would have it fixed, but no one ever came by to fix); the pool was unusable by Wed. as algae had taken over; only the top level had been updated, with many of the bathrooms looking like they were straight out of the '80's.; several of the sliding glass doors were either very hard to lock, or never would lock.

Michael, we are sorry that you were disappointed with the house. The previous reviews we had received thus far in 2022 (including the one from the week before you) were all 5 stars. We were not aware of any issue with the deadbolt/doors until you brought it up. And the handyman has fixed it since.
Regarding the pool, the pool cleaners clean on the day of check-in and leave a flyer on the door with contact info for you to call them with any issues. I didn't hear of any issues from you, nor did the pool company. But had we known, they would've come out to clean again.
Regarding the bathrooms, we have updated one each year since we've had it (in addition to renovating the entire top level kitchen/living/dining area) as well as floors throughout the house, painting the exterior, and installing a new metal roof. We have reinvested every dollar we've made back into the house to continue improving it for guests each year, and on top of that have put over $100K of our own money into renovations. Yes, some are still the original bathrooms (not from the 80's as house was built in the late 90s) but we can only afford to do so much each year.
For future guests looking at this home - we have already signed a contract to renovate/add two more bathrooms in January 2023. So 2023 bookings will have 5 masters (with 4 of the bathrooms being updated in the last 2 years) and the remaining two full baths not yet renovated, but the half bathroom and four masters will be brand new!
Everything was really great with one exception. Had no sheets on top floor master bed, and none in the home. Was told by the property manager to contact cleaning service which we did. Cleaning service said property manager had been told no sheets in the house for that bedroom and expected some to be dropped off. I guess the drop off didn't happen. Property manager gave us a $100 credit to get sheets at Harris Teeter, a 1/4 mile away, but Harris Teeter doesn't sell sheets, so we didn't have them for that bed.

Family vacation for 8 adults & 6 kids
The overall accommodations were satisfactory. It was obvious the owners were not experienced in general maintenance & management of their property. Upon arrival, at the designated time, VRBO failed to provide access to the house. A phone call to the owners was required to obtain the code/keys to gain entry. The pool was clean but the concrete deck surrounding the pool was filled with weeds and grass, it was not a clean area. The outdoor shower had scalding hot water. The washer & dryer were convenient but washer had only hot water hooked up. No cold water washing!! The double refrigerators in the kitchen were great but ice makers did not function well. The hardwood floors had not been cleaned/mopped before our arrival. The owners/manager was not attentive when plumbing issues needed addressed. General exterior maintenance was fair, yard needed mowed and the driveway drainage needed attention. Great location but I doubt we would rent this property again.

To clarify for future renters, the "plumbing issues" which she is referring to was her family clogging two of the toilets. We understand this happens (although we have never had somebody call to ask us to unclog a toilet for them in the 5+ yrs of owning) and therefore leave plungers in the house. Cheri did not want to unclog her own stool and wanted us to call plumbers to handle it. We directed her to the plungers and said that if she wanted a plumber, she would be responsible for the cost as this was (admittedly by her) not an issue with the house, but an issue caused by her family's stool. After being notified that she would be responsible for the bill, she decided she could unclog them herself. I believe to call these the house's "plumbing issues" is deceptive.
Unfortunately, we have no control over VRBO sending the code on time, but Cheri were the first guest to ever not receive a code. Nobody had mentioned the pool until you, so we did have a handyman spray the couple weeds that had grown through the cracks. The outdoor shower has hot and cold water. As with any shower, if you don't want want the water to be very hot, you have to mix in some cold.. As for the floors, I can assure you they were cleaned as our cleaners send us before, during, and after photos and they have their information on the fridge to call for any issues. My understanding is that you didn't call with any issues or they would've come back. Fridge is also working and was never mentioned to us..

Not safe / Poor Experience...Great access to beach
We were very excited due to the house space and location until the first few days of the experience were ruined by the following. No matter what, owners OWN the experience not matter what causes it.
Day 1-2: No wifi or cable
Day 3: Fire Hazard, Bad wiring to electrical box. We identified a fire occurring as the cable company investigated poor wi-fi. The morning of, one of the parents smelled smoke. If we did not identify and help in resolving the issue, there would have been a major house fire. Fire company came and we lost most of a day with our kids and family having to be outside and had to take everyone out for the evening until electrical was fixed and house was safe to return.
We also had to play onsite property manager brokering conversations between the fire department, electrical company, and cable company.
Without knowing it, we were at risk on Days 1 & 2 (with kids in the house)
Most of the week - Hot tub was not safe to enter - for part of the time there was a felt electrical current. Then it did not work and someone had to come to fix.
Day 4: AC unit began to leak and drip water down on lower level floor --- we had to stay to ensure the AC guy was able to put a temporary fix. This was the day after the fire dept had to come. Cable was finally fixed on Day 4.
I expected some sort of comp for the experience the first few days but property manager and owners would not negotiate. They gave a CHARCUTERIE BOARD instead.
Don't risk it, many other options

When the cable company came out on Day 3 (one day after we were informed of the issue) they explained that there was an electric current running through their cable line due to an issue with the outside utilities serving multiple homes in the area, specifically, the electric wires not having a functional neutral. This was explained by the utility company whose issue this was to contend with. The utility issue impacted the cable wire and led to the smoldering of the cable wire. We immediately contacted the utility company, on Sunday which happened to be Father’s Day. We also, in an abundance of caution contacted the fire department to ensure everyone’s safety and expedite the utility company’s response because getting immediate service, especially on a Sunday can be challenging. It is inappropriate to mischaracterize the facts as having dealt with a “fire” – that is simply factually inaccurate and damaging to the reputation of this wonderful house which has been overwhelmingly positively reviewed in the years it has been rented. To be clear, there was no fire and, as the manager of the property, we made the executive decision to contact the fire department following your representation that everything was fine. We called the fire department to ensure everything was safe until the utility company arrived to identify and resolve the issue. As they are required to do, the utility company arrived and fixed THEIR issue within a few hours, same day, again on a Sunday. As we discussed, this was an issue with the electric utility provider which was completely and entirely beyond the owner’s/house/property manager’s control and could have happened to any house on the grid.
As for the minor AC unit leak, that too was immediately remedied and resulted in no loss of air conditioning to the home or impact to your stay. Purely as a courtesy to address this inconvenience, we sent a bottle of wine and charcuterie board. None of this resulted in any damage to the house or your belongings. The same cannot be said for your lack of consideration of the items in the house as we understand a lamp was broken along with some other issues following your stay reported by our cleaning crew.
By the third day of your stay, you demanded a full refund for the week, yet insisted on staying in the house for the remainder of the rental period. Again, as a courtesy because there is nothing obligating us to do so, we offered you a replacement house down the block, which you promptly declined and confirmed that the house was good after the utility company fixed its problem.
You completed your stay without incident or complaint. It is not uncommon for minor, and unfortunately sometimes more substantial issues to occur (which was not the case here). This is why there are contracts you sign upon agreeing to the terms of your stay. Simply put, there are protections in place for renters such as yourself and owners/management companies, to equitably address resolution based upon the nature and extent of the issues and how they were addressed. Resultingly, we understand that VRBO agreed that your request is unreasonable and similarly does not think a refund is warranted given the actual facts which underly your complaints. Following VRBO’s refusal to meet your unsubstantiated demands, you contacted us to threaten a bad review if we did not refund you the full week despite the fact that you enjoyed the rest of your stay and checked out. We declined due to the fact that the issues were beyond our control, caused by the utility and fixed same-day. You also declined to pursue the alternatives provided despite the fact we were under no obligation to do so. As set forth above, we have had hundreds of trips to this house, and of the people who have chosen to review their trips, we have a 9.2 out of 10 rating. We pride ourselves on the amenities of the house, including newly renovated bathrooms, open space, ocean views, crow’s nest, outdoor showers, the list goes on and history speaks for itself. Owners rely on honest good faith reviews because their income typically depends on it. We take our responsibilities very seriously and are extremely disappointed that you chose to write a nasty review seemingly in retaliation for nor receiving a full refund despite your weeklong stay. We responded immediately, successfully, and provided options. When you turned those options down we sent you wine and a charcuterie board, to go above and beyond. Clearly your experience is an unfortunate outlier, but we cannot control what happens with an electric utility over which we exercise zero control.

Property location is good but experience was below average
We booked property for 17 people , website said sleeps 18, which was wrong. Only 16 people were able to sleep out of which 2 bunk bed were for kids. We had not so good experience staying as we stayed for 2 nights and had trouble sleeping for few of us due to lack of beds....before the start of vacation we had emailed owner about sleeping bed requirement but owner mentioned us about shortage. Also couple of bath room drainage need some cleaning as water was not draining out while taking shower.
We felt property location was good, but experience was average. Thank you

The property sleeps 18 including the two trundles under the twin beds. You did not mention any issues during your stay, or I would've remedied them/told you to pull out the twin trundle beds and had the handyman snake any drains that didn't work. The bathrooms that you mentioned after check out were actually just fully remodeled after your stay in December 2022 and seem to be draining fine now.
We loved the double refrigerators and dishwashers which were helpful in preparing the Thanksgiving meal. The dining room table accommodated all 16 of us. The living room was spacious and the sitting areas were comfortable and laid out in two groupings. It was nice to have games, puzzles and books to use while we were there.
The bedrooms gave us options for sleeping arrangements for all of us. The beds were comfortable. There were bathrooms on all three levels.
We enjoyed the hot tub and the pool table. And best of all was the short walk to the beach.
We would recommend more trash bags, paper towels, kleenex in the bathrooms
and dish towels.
We had a wonderful time and we would go back again.
We had a wonderful time at this property. It's a quick walk to the beach and the beach wasn't too crowded. The house has lots of room for our crew to stretch out. Pool and hot tub were fun too! The kitchen is a little limited in terms of supplies (only had salt and pepper) so make sure to bring all your pantry items if you plan to cook.
Alex, the host, was easily reached and quick to rectify any issues. The house was well appointed and spacious. The beach was a very short walk away and pristine! We would highly recommend this rental.
This house was great for us, we had three families and we were all really comfortable. It was extremely easy to get around and the beach was right across the street so very convenient.
This house was amazing! Just as pretty as the pictures! Alex was a great host. Gave us some sight seeing tips. Loves the horses! Definitely in our plans to come back.
Took a quick day trip to Corolla with some friends and stayed at the Whistling Clam - the location can’t be beat! We were on the beach faster than many oceanfront places we’ve stayed before.
Our stay at the Whistling Clam was great. Tons of space for two families with 5 children between 12 and 6 years of age. Could not ask more from the location -- quick walk across a quiet "street" to the boardwalk over the dune and then to a lovely beach. Great shelling and dolphin watching. Beautiful sunrises from the crow's nest in the morning.
The accommodations were quite nice with the top floor being a wonderful place for all of us to gather. Kitchen had plenty of dishes, cups, pots/pans. A little barebones in regards to food items (really one salt and pepper) but grocery stores were very close by and had everything you could need.
We came in the off-season, so many shops and restaurants were not open but we honestly rarely left the house/beach area and just cooked in the nice kitchen. Double dishwashers were great! Gas grill was huge and worked well. I needed to get a tank of propane but this will be reimbursed.
Owner very responsive to all inquiries. We noted some leaking from one of the older vanities in one of the older bathrooms (most of them have been very nicely renovated) and he had a repairman out to fix it the next day. Pool was not open when we were there, so I cannot comment on that, but the hot tub was on and clean.
Again, overall a great trip that was enjoyed by all!
We had a lovely stay at this great, HUGE home. There is plenty of space and bedrooms spread across three levels. Lots of decks - and a crow's nest from which you can see the ocean. We enjoyed the huge kitchen and comfy sitting areas. If you are looking for a big home next to the ocean, this is it. You walk out the door, down a boardwalk and your toes are in the sand.
This property worked out well for all ages. The common areas are just awesome. The living/dining/family room area was designed with big groups in mind. The kitchen updates were great and the entire extended family fit at the beautiful dining table. The beaches were perfection. We would definitely visit again.

About the host
Hosted by Alex
Alex & Ashley are college sweethearts who moved to Corolla for the summer after college, came back years later to buy the Whistling Clam, and got married in Corolla in 2021. They bought the house in 2019 when they were living in Los Angeles and had a property manager, but have now come back to the east coast and are managing it themselves. Please like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thewhistlingclam or search The Whistling Clam for Alex's cell!
Why they chose this property
Alex spent his summers at his grandparents' house in Corolla with all of his cousins, uncles and aunts each year. He then brought Ashley there to show her where he made his fondest memories as a child and she too fell in love with the area. They moved down there for a month after college before starting their careers and hoped to one day have a place of their own. Four years later, they bought the Whistling Clam and two years after that, they were married in Corolla with the rehearsal party at the Whistling Clam and wedding at the Currituck Club.
What makes this property unique
This house includes a private pool, hot tub, crows nest on the roof with wonderful 360 degree views and beach access right out the front door! On the second level, you'll find 4 bedrooms, a King master, Queen master, and two rooms sharing a Jack and Jill bathroom (each will have a master bathroom by 2023) with one room having 2 sets of bunk beds and the other having 2 twin beds with trundles under them. This level also has a mini-fridge and living area with a smaller sectional couch. The top level has the main living area, kitchen, dining area, and another King master bedroom. Off of this level is a screened-in porch with access upstairs to the crows nest.
