About this property

Heart of the Latin Quarter 2br Rooftop Duplex

With its original 350 yr old beams, hardwood floors and antique floor tiles, this feels like a country home in the heart of Paris. Quiet, open and airy, it is furnished for comfort and coziness in warm, rich hues.

**Note: This is a 5th floor walk-up, no elevator, all the better to work off those croissants!
**Please make sure you read through the description thoroughly before requesting to book--thank you!

Located on a quiet street giving right onto the Place de la Sorbonne with its world-famous university, this charming and calm 2 bedroom, 65 square meter (700 square foot) duplex apartment is located 5 flights up to the top floor of a beautiful 17th century building in the heart of the Latin Quarter. A very calm, quiet building with only one apartment per floor, you are virtually a stone's throw to the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens and the famous Saint Germain shopping quarter right behind, as well as a 5-minute walk to the Seine with Notre Dame cathedral just across the bridge on the Ile de la Cité, the heart of medieval Paris.
Also within 5-minute walks are the Pantheon and the Jardin du Luxembourg where the French Senate sits, and right down my street is the Musee Cluny where can be found some of the last vestiges of the Roman Walls of Paris, and where resides the famous Dame de la Licorne painting.

This rooftop duplex has its original beam-work throughout and is bright, open and airy. It is furnished for comfort and coziness in warm, rich hues, with many of its features such as stairwell, mantelpiece, sinks and cabinetry having been sourced from "brocantes," the French answer to antique markets.

Renovated and decorated by me, its Franco-Californian owner, the apartment is a mix of arty and old-worldly, with many decorative items lovingly chosen from my around-the-world travels. Every aspect has been thoughtfully chosen to create an atmosphere of warmth and serenity; the only danger is that once you arrive, you never want to leave!

The bathroom has antique stone travertine tiles throughout, along with rich wood flooring that makes it a pleasure to step out of the bathtub and on to. The petite yet functional kitchen has all new appliances including gas cooktop, electric oven, and Miele washer and dryer. Just past the antique ceramic sink and the separative oak bar, the kitchen opens onto the dining area of the long, rectangular living space with its country dining room table on one end next to the decorative fireplace, and the living area with its couch you just want to sink into, opposite. Flooded with light from the living room double windows and two skylights, one really does feel tucked up and away under Paris' rooftops; a lovely respite from the busy streets below.

The living area provides a flat-screen television, which comes with English-speaking channels including BBC, CNN, & ESPN Sports, a VCR and an all-zone DVD player with my own large selection of DVDs to pick from. Free international calls to landlines in 63 countries as well as to mobile phones in the US and Canada as well as free are Wifi provided.

The two bedrooms, one with queen-sized bed, the other with king — one upstairs, one downstairs — are perfect for retiring to after a long day spent sightseeing. Both have high-power fans provided for hot summer days. The downstairs bedroom, which faces the courtyard, provides absolute silence, while upstairs one drifts off surrounded by the stunning 350 year-old beams that are the apartment’s bones, but also its heart.

**There is a staircase & large wooden beams across the apartment and there should be no attempt to climb onto the beams. Renter agrees that the owner will not be liable for any injuries caused by or related to any of these.

My apartment is professionally cleaned, with hotel quality towels and linens provided.

Wonderful location
We had a great time staying at this property and I would most likely recommend it to friends. The location was outstanding and it really feels like a classic Parisian apartment. As others have mentioned, you should be aware of the steep and winding stairs going up to the 5th floor. It was quite warm during our stay and the apartment does get hot. However, with the fans provided, we had no problems sleeping and were rarely home during the day. The listing is mostly accurate, however, several additional items have been added to the already small space and it can feel chaotic once you add people and suitcases. Overall, we were pleased with the property and enjoyed our stay.

Wonderful apartment in great location
We had a fabulous stay here. As long as you read the description carefully and understand that its a walk-up with no elevator and narrow stairs, you'll love it! The apartment is beautifully decorated, with lots of light and everything you could need for your stay. Both Kelly and Vincent were super helpful and communicative, making sure we were comfortable and taken care of. The location is very convenient and close to lots of things. Our family had a wonderful stay and would definitely come again!

Bohemian Skylit Stay in Heart of Paris
This property met all of our expectations, and the host was gracious in every way and extremely responsive. We were within walking distance of really everything we needed, including a grocery store (Monoprix), an excellent bakery (Eric Kayser), and metro (Odeon / Cluny La Sorbonne). If you can manage some spiraling stairs at the beginning and ending of each journey, you won't be disappointed during your stay in this charming nook.

excellent location for a week stay
After a crazy ordeal arriving in Paris (not any fault of the owner here) we checked in five hours after we were supposed to arrive. No problems or complaining by the greeter. In fact, he was so apologetic and nice (again, it had nothing to do with him). Five hours is a long time to wait for an arrival, so his pleasant demeanor was above and beyond. The flat is super charming, rustic, perhaps a little bit Bohemian(?), very clean, fully functional, and comfortable. We loved it. Three of us had plenty of space to spread out. The master bedroom bed was very comfortable. The weather was super cold and wet while we were there, but the flat was cozy and warm. The five floors of stairs sounds harsh, but were surprisingly easy (and as other reviewers have mentioned, allows for a chance to work off some of the wine, pastries, and baguettes!). We got used to them in a day. For such an old building, it was surprisingly sturdy and quiet (not always the case in central Paris). We watched some of the World Cup football game there, so the cable works well. Good internet allowed for me to work while there. The building was getting some restoration work done outside (which is likely competed by this writing -- two weeks after we left) so we couldn't take advantage of any views of the neighboring buildings. It didn't matter really, we were hardly there during the day...when I was there I was working. The street is tiny and super quiet, and the place de la Sorbonne is charming and quaint. The square is pretty lively actually with locals, which was nice. The Latin Quarter rocks if you've never stayed there! (if you've stayed, you know). The owner was so helpful and courteous and checked in a couple of times as did the property manager just to see how things were going. We felt like we had someone to call on if we really needed something. Overall, this is a great place to stay in Paris. It fits with the Latin Quarter. The location is great. Due to Covid and being close to the holidays, we didn't ride the metro as much as we normally do, but taxis were numerous and helpful to have in the rain. We can't wait to return!

I am the Franco-Californian owner who would love to have you enjoy my place as much as I do!

Travelling is my favorite thing to do in the world, everything in my flat was brought back from one trip or another.

Why they chose this property

-In the heart of the old Paris, a 5-minute walk to the Seine.
-Farmer's market Tues, Thurs, Sat at Place Maubert-Mutualitee, a 5-minute walk.
-Surrounded by fab cafes, restaurants, shopping district, Luxembourg gardens, with bus, metro and RER stops just around the corner at every turn.
-Despite being in the heart of Paris, on a super calm, quiet street.
