Holyfield Cabin and Bunkhouse

Sitting above Sams Creek in the Appalachian mountains, we offer a rustic, wormy chestnut over 100 year old, updated cabin ( 548 sq. ft. ) with a screen front porch & covered and open side deck with outdoor wood burning fireplace ( we provide a reasonable amount of firewood and have more for purchase ), propane grill, living/queen bedroom, kitchen & full bathroom with standing shower. Steps away is a bunkhouse with queen bed, bunk beds with stairs, 2 chairs and full bathroom with standing shower. The cabin and bunkhouse have heat & air and will sleep 1-6 total. We have cards, Uno, checkers, Monopoly, poker chips, the Ring game, cornhole, and have a badminton court ! Bring your fishin’ pole - we have native brown and rainbow trout right here in Sams Creek - no license required on our private property. It’s like having your own personal park. We have FIBER INTERNET for your work or school needs. We have a DVR with a 31” tv screen and a nice selection of family movies. We have a Fire stick. Our tap water is from a well that is almost 700’ deep in the aquaphor - pure, clean and delicious !
We are centrally located between Asheville NC & Johnson City, Tn. - 30-35 minute drive to either city which are known for their exceptional restaurants, taprooms, arts, and music. We are only 15 minutes from skiing/tubing at Hatley Pointe Ski Resort and Zip N Slip, White water raft & zipline at French Broad Adventures. We are only 4 miles from Tennessee’s newest wilderness park - Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park, and 3 miles from the Sams Gap crossing of the Appalachian Trail. Lots to do and see in East Tennessee or just stay here, never leave and soak it all in... It’s HEAVEN to us ! We are a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat. We live on our beautiful property, across the creek and in the woods - so, if you need anything at all, just ask/text or come on over... we want our guests to be reassured that this is a very nice and safe area. PLUS, we are dog friendly. We do ask that you inform us on the number and type of dogs (limit of 2) that you are bringing and that you must crate them when you are gone. Sorry, no cats please. You will be held responsible for any damages. We offer fresh towels daily and will remove your trash bags. Last stop for gas or groceries- if you are approaching us from the Asheville area, Mars Hill, NC exit 11 has a very nice Ingles. If you are approaching us from the Johnson City area, Food City in Erwin, exit 37 is your place. Both grocery stores are just off I-26 and less than 20 minutes from us. Local laundromats are in Erwin, Tn and Weaverville, NC ( 20 minutes east or west ) for our longer-staying guests to take care of their personal items. Call or text as you take Flag Pond, exit 50 and we will greet you at the top of our paved driveway. Parking in front of the bunkhouse. Please follow our directions as your GPS may steer you wrong - for example, we are on the Right not the left :) If approaching from I-26W, GPS will tell you to take the Wolf Laurel exit 3 - it is best to drive one more exit into Tennessee to Flag Pond Rd. exit 50, especially after dark. It also might be helpful to view our video provided that will show you the way. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to your stay ! Escape, relax, and explore !

We had a great trip and our hosts definitely made the stay even better. We had everything we needed and the property was beautiful! If you want the cabin in the woods experience, this is it! You can leave your windows open and hear the running creek water. So peaceful! Plenty of places for our pups to enjoy around the property, including a great walking trail.
Outdoor area, great for walking the dogs and seeing butterflies.

My daughter had always wanted to travel to see the leaves change, so I started searching for a place to stay. Right away, I was drawn to Chuck and Valda’s place. The reviews were amazing! The more I read, the more I wanted to meet them. So, I booked the cabin and bunkhouse but then wanted to include more family. I asked Valda and she said she had another cabin on the same property called the Hideaway, but hurry! So I booked that one too and our trip was absolutely perfect!!! When I was little, we would travel several hours on a Friday night to see my grandparents. We couldn’t wait to get there and it was always late, but they were waiting for us with the lights on and the beds were freshly made. We would hug and talk and laugh for a while before we fell into our warm cozy beds. That’s what it was like for us when we drove on Friday from Florida to Flag Pond. Chuck and Valda had the lights on. They met us just as we were pulling in and welcomed us and gave us big hugs. We talked and laughed..they showed us around and shared a little history. After they left, we jumped into our warm cozy freshly made beds!! They warmed our hearts and made us feel safe and like family! All the great reviews are true. Valda made delicious treats and had them waiting for us! The water from the tap is 100%pure and delicious from a well. The cabins and the bunkhouse were all amazing! We really enjoyed the leaves, the creek, fireplace and most of all meeting our precious hosts. May God bless you!!!

Lovely cabin near creek

We had a great time staying here. It’s rustic and perfect for a relaxing vacation. Plenty of space on the comfortable patio where you can enjoy the sounds of the creek. Out hosts were very welcoming and stopped by every day to check that we had what we needed. The grounds are beautiful and so is the overall area.

A Trip Worth Taking

We had a really pleasant experience. It's like taking a step back in time. Valda and Chuck are outstanding hosts. We never left the property during our stay. We played badminton and checkers, relaxed on the porch, went for walks, built fires, and caught fish in the creek. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Perfect, serene family getaway

From the moment we walked in the door we felt at home. The main cabin is quaint and well stocked with everything you could possibly need, there was even eggs and condiments in the fridge. The bunk house was a short distance away and perfect for our kiddos. Both places were very clean and comfortable. The creek was the highlight of our trip! It was wonderful to listen to from the deck, and the kiddos (and my hubby haha) built a small rock dam to fish and was deep enough for the kids to sit and cool off. Chuck and Val walked us around to show us the place, and it is so obvious they love the property and meeting the people that rent it out. “Uncle” chuck even has a zip line that the kids really loved! I can’t say enough good things about this beautiful little slice of heaven…. Book it!! Thank y’all for sharing this place with us, we cannot wait to come back!

Idyllic retreat

We have stayed at many lovely VRBO properties, but this one scores off the charts for beauty, seclusion, hospitality, and accessibility. Photos do not do it justice. With the large screened porch and even larger covered deck, the cabin seemed spacious and cozy at the same time. Chuck and Valda have done a marvelous job restoring and furnishing the cabin so that it is comfortable and convenient while maintaining a sense of age and history appropriate to the structure. The bunkhouse made it easy for 2 couples to spend time together without giving up privacy. The surroundings are Appalachian woodlands at their best. This property is located between the marvelous Rocky Fork State Park and the Sam's Gap Crossing of the AT--perfect for outdoors adventure. It is also just a few minutes' drive off I-26. Chuck and Valda were so warm and welcoming! We plan to return in the future for a longer stay!

A Thanksgiving to be Thankful

Chuck and Valda are top-notch hosts. The property was awesome and exactly what we were looking for to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. As Floridians, we wanted to have an old-fashion, cold weather Thanksgiving. We got the cooler weather and had a fire in the outside fireplace every night (with S'mores). Cozy cabin and bunk house in a beautiful rural location. Amazing property with hiking opportunities, which we took full advantage. Chuck and Valda have so much enthusiasm for the century-old property. They tell the history of the property with such passion. They have invested so much energy and time in renovating this cabin. We enjoyed visiting Johnson City and Asheville, hiking in the Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park and ziplining at the Navitat Canopy Adventures. Lastly, the boys became proficient at the "Ring Game". What a great experience. Thank you, Chuck and Valda.

We had an outstanding stay!

We have stayed at several different properties in the area over the past few years, but this was our favorite and we cannot wait to come back again. Valda and Chuck have done an amazing job of creating a beautiful and relaxing retreat by the creek. The cabin we stayed in was well-updated and comfortable while maintaining the charm of this historic dwelling. The cabin had everything we needed for our stay, and they were thoughtful and generous with the amenities to make our time there easier and more comfortable. When we arrived, Valda and Chuck greeted us personally and gave us the tour of the property along with the history there which was fascinating to me and added to our enjoyment of the area. When we were outside, we would often see them around the property and we appreciated them checking in with us to make sure we had everything we needed. We enjoyed spending the evenings on the attached deck with the wood-burning stove while listening to the relaxing sounds of the adjacent creek. We often travel with our two dogs who were also welcomed and had a blast exploring the property. We own some land several miles away, and intend to build and eventually move nearby in the future. Chuck and Valda were happy to talk with us about their experiences building this beautiful homestead and offer advice to us as we embark on a similar endeavor. Their kindness and the beauty of the property were powerful reminders of why we want to eventually relocate to this area.

Quiet, Peaceful and Amazing!

Beautiful and exactly what we needed! I searched for weeks to find a quiet place for our Anniversary getaway. We wanted peace and quiet... and hopefully fishing! I happened across this listing on VRBO. I had never used the company before so I was wary. Communication before our stay was excellent! Chuck and Valda are truly amazing people. We were greeted when we arrived and Chuck explained the history of the cabin to my husband and I. It's an awesome story you will love to hear. Valda gave us a tour and made sure we had everything we needed. Chuck even picked us some fresh ramps to cook. So delicious! There was a huge assortment of staples and snacks in the kitchen along with canned goodies that Valda made herself. The decor of the cabin is a must see. We just loved it. Everything was so beautiful and unique... and so, so quiet! My husband and I spent our time fishing, playing games(there are several there), reading and having so much fun together. We fell in love with the area and sure didn't want to leave. We definitely will be back. With such gracious and kind hosts(thank you both!) and the awesome cabin, this is one stay you will not regret nor ever forget!

Close to Rocky Fork State Park, a gorgeous must-see! The details that Chuck & Valda put into their cabins for their guests & their stay here are numerous & thoughtful. My children and dog also enjoyed their time here. It was the perfect rest a couple of weary veterans needed…we can hardly wait to come back!! Thank you!

Holyfields Cabin and bunkhouse

Chuck and Valda were incredible. My father in law had an accident when he arrived and they took over stabilizing him and offering to take him to the hospital if we were not able to get their quickly. Communication between us was fantastic throughout the leadup to and through our stay. The location is great, secluded but easy to get to. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and relaxing. We definitely plan to return and stay. Chuck and Valda were available to help with anything but not hovering. They both went above and beyond to make sure our stay was wonderful. 5 Stars!

The best East Tn secret

This cabin, bunkhouse and adjacent cabin are perfect for a family and easily accommodates 10 people if renting both cabins. The view and sound of the creek is breath taking We were blown away. Chuck and Valda are the best hosts. Homemade cookies and ice cream were there when we arrived as were this precious couple who made sure check in went smoothly. We wanted to spend some time with them learning of the history of the property and area and they were willing to accommodate. This is such a special unique touch and made this trip so memorable. We will absolutely be back. Although you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere you are close to several small towns with delicious food and only 30 min from Johnson City. The hosts thought of everything you might need and provided plenty of info to make the trip perfect. So glad we ran across this listing. Fabulous !!
