About this property

Spacious and relaxing mountain chalet, perfect location! Many renovations!

Welcome to Ursa Major!! (aka The Great Bear, or The Big Dipper)

We are proud to invite you to enjoy our 3 bedroom, 3 bath home in the heart of Chalet Village, Gatlinburg. Larger than most homes in the area, we feature spacious living and game rooms, full size pool table and bar, hot tub and sauna, two wrap-around decks and seasonal views! Plus access to Chalet Village Owner's Club community pools, fitness center and tennis courts. Many renovations have been completed to modernize this classic chalet.

Located in the heart of Chalet Village, Ursa Major has easy access to downtown Gatlinburg, the main entrance to Smoky Mountain National Park, Ober Gatlinburg, Chalet Village community pools, and is a quick drive to Pigeon Forge. This is an amazing mountain retreat, and the property size ensures that you're not too close to your neighbors. If you've been in this area, you know that the roads can sometimes be exciting to say the least! The drive to our house does feature a couple of switchbacks and climbs, but is easily doable and the driveway can accommodate 3 cars.

Upon entering, you'll instantly relax when you step into the open concept living room with vaulted ceilings and wall of windows that let in tons of natural light from the wrap-around deck. Also, we have updated the kitchen with new stainless steel appliances and large dining area.

Downstairs, you'll be thrilled with all of the features you're looking for in a mountain vacation home: Extra large hot tub on the deck, classic full size Brunswick pool table (with enough room to play!), wet bar with a microwave and coffee maker, large screen TV, and bonus Sauna!!

Ursa Major comfortably sleeps 8 people with 2 bedrooms on the main floor and one downstairs. The Master King suite has a private bathroom with shower. The second upstairs bedroom features a Queen bed with an adjacent full bathroom. The third bedroom downstairs has a King bed and another adjacent full bathroom. Plus we have a day bed with trundle in the game room. All bedrooms have TVs and cable package.

Please enjoy your stay and share your best memories! We're committed to delivering the best Gatlinburg vacation experience, and look forward to hosting many repeat visitors.

SEASONAL GUIDE TO STAYING AT URSA MAJOR
Staying at Ursa Major or the Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge area is amazing all year round, but there are some things things that are better depending on the season. Here's a general guide:

Spring (March/April/May)
Temperatures are generally mild with highs mostly in the 60s-70s and lows in the mid 30s-50s. March is one of the busiest months in the area. Bears are starting to venture out of their dens and seeing them around the neighborhood is a regular occurrence (sometimes even with new cubs!). Wildflowers and lightning bugs also are stars of the National Park. Increasing spring rains bring new green foliage, full streams and waterfalls. Note that mountain views from Ursa Major begin to lessen as the leaves fill in. Also, this is a great time to check out Dollywood when it opens for the year.

Summer (June/July/August)
Average highs in the high 80s and lows in the 60s. Chalet Village pools and recreational facilities are open to Ursa Major guests, and usually are open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If you're looking for great hiking, the National Park is in full swing. On hotter days, keep in mind that the temperatures cool off by sometimes 10 degrees or more at the higher elevations. Views are obscured by dense trees at Ursa Major at this time and it feels like a cozy treehouse in the forest!

Fall (September/October/November)
Obviously the area is known for its amazing fall colors, and Ursa Major is right in the middle of the show! Though the timing of the peak colors vary from year to year, generally you will get to see some foliage between mid-September and early November. The timing also varies by elevation (Ursa Major is about 1100 feet above the town of Gatlinburg). There are many fall festivals happening including Octoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg, Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff, the Craftmen's Fair, Ripley's Fright Nights leading up to Halloween, and more.

Winter (December/January/February)
While this is the generally the slowest tourist time of year in the area, it's also a great opportunity to enjoy the area without the crowds! If shopping is your thing, that is definitely still on in downtown Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. If you like to ski, Ober Gatlinburg is usually open and they do have snow making capabilities (check their site for current conditions). With the leaves having fallen, mountain views from Ursa Major's window-filled living room and decks are at their best. Make sure to see an amazing sunset from the chalet! Also, keep an eye on the weather - snow and ice are possible, and conditions can even change from downtown on the way up the mountain. Four wheel drive vehicles and snow chains may be needed to get around Chalet Village in the winter months.

Gatlinburg vacation

The house was perfect! It was our first trip with kids and they loved it as well. Very cozy, and the hosts were terrific. They went above and beyond with the amenities. We did not utilize the hot tub and sauna but instructions were clear had we had time to use them. Highly recommend staying at this property!!

Family weekend

We stayed for a weekend with family. The house was as pictured and had everything we needed. Bring your own pillows though because the ones provided are flat. Definitely active bears (obviously) in the area because they scratched up my truck trying to open the doors.

BEARS!!!!!

The cabin was nice and up in the mountains. I will say do not discount the fact that it is up in the mountains. The roads are narrow and the turns are tight. Getting into the property is a little tricky but extremely doable. Also, don’t underestimate the disclaimer about locking your cars and taking any food items out due to bears. There are definitely bears. We had a set of cornhole bags in the bed of my truck. And apparently they actually had corn in them. The bears opened the truck topper and took the corn bags. There was no damage and no harm done, but they did get themselves a snack. We did watch the Bears break into a car at a cabin just below us and it looks like they took out a coffee mug. Beautiful views very nice place to stay.

Such a Wonderful Stay

My friends and I stayed for a few nights on this property and had an amazing time. The house was clean and in a quiet area. The roads leading up may be a bit unsettling for those who aren’t used to steep and twisty mountain roads. Other than that, my stay here was great and I would look into booking again if I were to find myself in the area.

Spring break

We stayed for a few days over spring break. It was such a nice getaway and different from beach spring break, especially with our young kids. The location was great! We also enjoyed all the amenities this property had to offer. Communication between the owners was so easy! We had zero issues with the property during our stay. Would definitely recommend to other!

Truly enjoyed our stay. The house is older but still very comfortable. Two levels so we had kids on the bottom and adults on top. Wifi and cable so I still got to watch ball games. Owners were very quick to respond to questions. Only wish we had time to stay a few more days.

Great visit

Loved the house. However, there was an odd smell like a musty or moldy smell. We sprayed some Scentsy air freshener and it was fine. If you are not Mountain driving people be aware. We were fine with it and saw several bears everything we went up or down. We would stay again.

Unforgettable Stay: Bears, Comfort, and a Great Location!

Our stay at Pete and Tara's home was wonderful! With a group of six, we had daily bear sightings—an exciting, unique experience. The bedrooms were cozy, and the double decks were perfect for relaxing among the trees. There wasn’t much of a mountain view due to tall trees, but the listing photos accurately show each season’s views. We visited in fall, and the scenery matched the winter photos with bare trees. The updated rec room sound system was great, and I loved the Bluetooth speakers! The sauna and hot tub were also perfect for unwinding after a day of hiking or exploring the city. There were plenty of games to keep us entertained indoors. If you’re not comfortable with steep, curvy roads, this spot might not be ideal. Have someone guide you into the driveway and watch for bears. While we had no issues, bears did open a nearby car door, so keep cars locked and food out. The house had ample space for all of us, and the kitchen was well-equipped. I’d recommend grabbing groceries at Walmart before heading up, especially if you want to avoid driving at night. The owners were fantastic and quickly shared our bear encounter video, which gave us all a good laugh! Just a short drive to town, the location is convenient for shopping, moonshine tasting, and dining. The house was thoughtfully stocked with essentials, and we felt safe with the bears nearby by following the owners’ advice. We would definitely stay here again!

Christmas Getaway

From the minute we arrived, I knew this cabin was going to be perfect for my family. I have stayed in several cabins in the Gatlinburg area and the interior of this one is my favorite so far. The main floor is so comfortable windows everywhere. The kitchen looks small on the pictures, but it is an open enough floor plan so you really don't think about it. The master bed room is huge. All bedrooms were very comfortable and met our needs. I have a 13 year old and she stayed on the bed in the game room and loved it. It gave her some space. Speaking of the game room, it has a very nice pool table with everything you need and a perfectly placed bar area. The hot tub was perfect and we used it every night. My favorite part of the cabin is that it has wood burning fireplaces on both levels. It was wonderful to have one upstairs while watching tv, but also be able to light one if you are going to be downstairs. Make sure to bring your own wood. I grilled burgers and the grill works great. I had a few questions for Pete during the week and he answered me very quickly every time. He even called once to explain something, so the hosts are great. All week we were looking for the bears. On the last day, after we had given up, I was about to go outside to put something in my truck and there they were walking down the road. We watched 4 of them for about 15 minutes. If I had to say anything negative, I have stayed in cabins with better views, but it is still good. Great place. 10/10!!!

Great cabin. The layout was great for our family to all have a bedroom but also have multiple common spaces to hang out and visit. Communication with the owners before the stay was quick and responsive. Check in was easy. We saw several bears on the drive to and from the cabin, and even had one right outside of the cabin one evening. Great visit.

We loved our stay here. The check in process was very easy. Communication with owners was immediate. We had to reach out regarding some lights that had burned out and Tara and Pete immediately helped us. The home is beautiful with plenty of space to spread out. We had 2 adults, 2-18 year olds, a 15 year old, a 13 year old and a 4 year old. They all spent so much time with the pool table and hot tub. The roads were tricky at first, but very doable after a few times driving them. If you have a large truck be prepared to do a few 3 point turns to get in and out of driveway and the road leading to house. A car manages just fine. Be prepared for BEARS. EVERYDAY! Listen to the instructions and lock your car. We had one of our door handles messed up even with following the rules, but nothing that can't be easily fixed. We had an issue with neighbors not latching trash that I am sure very much contributed to this issue. Tara and Pete assisted with getting the local authority to come contact the neighboring home and have the trash picked up and correct this issue. They were very apologetic even when it was nothing of their doing. The only issue that I found with the home as a mom that cooks majority of our meals is that the kitchen could use a few things. More spatulas, mixing bowls and pot holders (we could not find any). If you want a peacefully stay with some fun bear activity that is close to almost everything you want to do in Gatlinburg or the GSMNP this is the place.
