About the host
Hosted by Gill Cumming
Fifteen years ago when Gill and James first saw Panniers Farm they dreamt of planting a vineyard on the wonderful south facing slope and make English wine from this very special place. Now we have two parcels of vines and a small winery producing award winning still and sparkling wines as well as traditional Somerset cider.
Why they chose this property
This is a truly wonderful place to come and relax in peaceful Somerset countryside, being on the edge of the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels, with Wells and Glastonbury within a few miles.
The cottage is on a vineyard producing English sparkling and still wines, offering vineyard and winery tours and tastings. A range of Somerset craft ciders are also made here. Seasonal fresh produce such as salads are available, as well as eggs from our free range hens. Our small flock of friendly Suffolk sheep roam freely on the hillside.
Take a short walk through the lanes to the local goat farm in the village and sample their delicious range of goats cheeses and milk, and lots of friendly goats to pet!
On the edge of the Somerset Levels, this is a fantastic area for bird watching with three reserves close by: RSBP Shapwick Heath, Ham Wall and West Hay, where afternoons can be spent watching the starling formations. There are also many great walks, being at the foot of the Mendip Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Ebbor Gorge and Deer Leap are a few minutes away by car.
After a long day of walking, what could be better than visiting one of the many traditional local pubs before retiring in front of the open fire. There are three pubs within walking distance,The Pheasant Inn at Worth being at the bottom of the lane. The Sheppey Inn at Godney, just a fifteen minute drive away is well worth a visit, the quirky pub has been rated one of the best British pubs - "Its exterior gives no hint of the wonders within", serves up delicious gastropub food and puts on many gigs and monthly music nights.
This is also an area rich in heritage, located just outside the historic city of Wells, one of England's smallest cities, with its beautiful buildings, cobbled streets and an old market place, where there is a large farmer's market held on Wednesday morning. The Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace are well worth a visit.
Bath and Bristol are only a forty five minute drive away.
