Simon Carnachan is responsible for designing a number of New Zealand's landmark beach houses. Calianne is a grand fusion of Simon's creativity, construction expertise and a substantial budget. The voluminous roof draws on influences from the communal buildings of the Pacific Islands. A theme that extends to the flow through ventilation, multiple adjustable louvres of cedar and glass: Air-conditioning courtesy of sea breezes.
Fringed with a clipped hedge of Hibiscus and surrounded on 3 sides by flat lawns large enough to zip flick a Frisbee. Out front and centre: Doubtless Bay. The front garden ends with the sand of Coopers Beach. A stand of 6 mature Pohutukawa lean right out over the sand. They provide a degree of privacy and infinitely adjustable sunbathing shade.
The property is ideal for a multi-family holiday. Encompassing 335sqm the home features 2 master bedroom suites and 3 lounges in the core dwelling and accommodation for a further 12 people in the Southern wing. Upstairs, 2 fun bunk rooms, single beds for up to 8 guests, skylights that swing open to reveal the Milky Way. A central courtyard is completely private from the outside world and serves as the entertainment hub.
Appointments and chattels are of a quality that are befitting a home of this standard. Coffee machine, 2 large fridges, 2 dishwashers, monitored security system, unlimited speedy wi-fi, 2 TV lounges (no TV in the main lounge). Two new Viking Kayaks for guests' use were purchased in 2025. A single person Espri model and a 2 + 1 model suitable for 2 paddlers and a child. There are 2 beach trolleys, 3 adult and 1 child's buoyancy vests and 3 paddles provided.
There are a handful of properties of this calibre in Doubtless Bay. Only one is available for a few select groups of guests that seek a stay in a Kiwi Beach house designed by one of our most revered architects. A combination of design and location that delivers a perfect sub-tropical cocktail of casual cool class.

This place is stunning, easy access to the beach. Plenty of room for a large group staying, and David as always is there to ensure that it is an enjoyable time for all. Would highly recommend this place to stay at.
I cannot rate this property highly enough, everything about our stay was perfect. The house is amazing and David was great to deal with. The perfect spot for a family getaway.
This house is really very pleasant to live in. The location is exceptional and David, our host is very attentive to ensure that everything goes as well as possible. We had a great week of family vacation, I highly recommend if you are looking for a beautiful and large house in the far Northland

Liked: Cleanliness, location
Disliked: Check-in, listing accuracy
Lovely place. Poor service. Lack of welcome. Lack of information, a tatty blue folder with info on light switches.Oven didn't go, however an electrician came, luckily, as we were having a caterer in. We feel that this should have been checked before our arrival. The biggie was the Fire didn't go,This was known by the owners in advance. The owner told us there was a problem with the sensors and it was not working. This was something that attracted us to this bach. The big communal area sitting around the fire in the evening. Same with the outside fire. They said someone would be out to look at it. No one came to look at it. We spent 6 nights with 15 people in the middle of winter in this very expensive bach and the owner knew that the fire was not working. Dish Drawer didn't go. Phone calls to the owner were to no avail. He did not know how to use it. No Info on recycling, no bins, no liners, we bought our own. Couldn't get coffee machine to go, Coffee plungers broken. No extra toilet paper.Bed side lights not working in one of the bedrooms. Lounge lights not all working. We paid A LOT of money for this bach for the 6 nights and there were a number of issues which did not meet our expectations considering the price we paid. Although we completely appreciate we were delayed into Coopers Beach on Thursday night and did not expect anyone to wait up for us, we did not see anyone over the 6 nights we stayed. This would have been helpful to show us how to work some of the facilities.
Excellent beachside location, huge indoor/outdoor space, awesome layout, abundant parking space, exceptional facilities (high speed wifi, barbeque, outdoor/indoor furniture to cater to a large group, wide range of crockery/utensils/glassware, kayaks, at least half a dozen washrooms, sun-loungers, home-like comforts, to name a few).
The best part, though, was the pleasing & welcoming nature of the host, David, and his superb communication & ease of approachability. One of the best trips we've ever had! We're already planning our next trip here & for a longer duration! Perfect Ten!
The house was amazing plenty of space for our large group the weather was crap but relaxing in front of fire was enjoyed by all ages of the group we had brought some activities from home for the kids we also enjoyed the monopoly game that was available. We did most of our cooking on the BBQ cos there were many mouths to feed.. The views from all levels of the house were stunning despite the weather. Hope to stay again and have recommended this property to whanau and friends.
Our time spent here was absolutely amazing, our host was great!! The location is absolutely stunning and definitely will be returning. I would highly recommend this lovely home and host to anyone
Great location for easy reach to shops, beach, walks and sight seeing.
The house was wonderful that it accommodated our family of 14. Ages 17 months to 60s. Dew to the price I would have expected a few small things such as a washing basket, dishwasher tablets, rubbish bags, brush and shovel after sweeping the floor. And kitchen stools under the bench. Over all l, yes, we would come back. It is a lovely spot and the manager was helpful with our tricky arrival due to the Northland floods.
Our host David welcomed us and made sure our stay was comfortable. This place has ample space and everything you need for a relaxing holiday! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this spectacular place and will definitely visit again.
