"White Oak Hideaway" - Very Private, Huge Deck, and Lake View
White Oak Hideaway is nestled on the southern edge of 22,000 acres of pristine watershed, a protected sanctuary for diverse Appalachian flora and fauna. With the Burnett reservoir in front of you and the Blue Ridge Parkway in the distance, this property is aptly named; a hideaway indeed, yet only 3.5 miles to downtown Black Mountain and 17 miles to downtown Asheville. The home boasts many modern conveniences, including ample parking, a fully equipped kitchen, wifi, TV's, washer and dryer, a gas fireplace for cooler months, and a huge deck looking out over woods, lake, and mountains. (Please know the entire adjoining watershed is off-limits to the public since it is Asheville's drinking water supply). The home consists of a central living room with ceiling to floor windows. A sliding glass door opens on to a huge deck which surrounds one entire side of the house. The two bedrooms are in wings at opposite ends of the home. The kitchen and dining area are also centrally located. Included is also a pantry and laundry room. The home is located on a one lane gravel road that is easily accessible with passenger vehicles. There is ample parking. The reservoir is the city of Asheville's public drinking water supply, so it is inaccessible.

Mac was a wonderful and responsive host. The house is in a remote, wooded area of Bumcombe County, but a 10 minute drive to the center of Black Mountain. Instructions were clear and Mac would pop right over when something wasn’t working, mask and all. There are a lot of bugs and bears! - because you’re really in the deep woods. Also because of the remote location the internet is spotty at best - this is definitely a disconnected sort of a retreat. The location is wonderfully serene and the views of the woods and reservoir are to die for. The kitchen and pantry fully stocked - they really take good care of their guests.
The house is lovely and the views are beautiful. Would love to see it when all the mountain laurels are in bloom. Host is very responsive to questions. Lots of little extras. My Sister and I would stay again. Great location and Black Mountain is full of shops. Got to check out Cousins Cuban Cafe!
The house was beautiful, well appointed and very clean. The Kent's were so kind, caring and hospitable, it felt like we were staying with family. It was so appreciated how much they went out of their way to make us feel welcome-they left the lights on for us! ;-) Looking forward to staying with them again.

Lovely location
The property is pretty remote which is exactly what we wanted. We arrived and easily checked in no problem. The first thing my wife noticed was dirty handprints on the doors, antra and pantry, and wiped them off. the air intake to the AC filter was/is filthy. the whole place could use a deep cleaning. the fireplace was non operational and the pilot light went out we were instructed to turn off gas when we texted the host he said he would be up to fix it next day and never came. Host did supply some bottled water, a few beers and some stale cereals and condiments. The place has a cool layout, especially for two couples. Bedrooms are on separate ends with communal areas in between.
Overall it is a neat property with nice views and privacy. Comfortable furnishings and clean linens and towels. But as mentioned could use a deep cleaning. So if "rustic" is your thing and not a clean freak, we would recommend this place.
What a perfect getaway house this is! We loved using this house as a home base as we explored Asheville and Pisgah Forest. The back deck is huge, with ample comfy seating, and provides a wonderful view of the reservoir and surrounding forest. The inside was clean, with ample kitchen space and indoor seating. Comfy beds with plenty of room to spread out. The owners were very responsive, and provided several pantry staples and fridge items that most places do not. Not expected, and a nice surprise! We would absolutely stay here again. The town of Black Mountain has shopping and small restaurants.
We loved the layout of the house--perfect for 2 couples as the 2 bedrooms were on opposite sides of the living area. Both bedrooms and the family room opened onto the deck which was as wide as the house and had comfy furniture and a lovely woods and lake view. Lots of great windows in the family room. Kitchen and bathrooms very well stocked with everything expected and lots of unexpected items as well. Great communication with host. We hope to stay here again. Only thing that would make me like it more is king beds instead of queens.
Amazing time at this beautiful property with a wraparound deck overlooking a huge lake and mountains. The house was very clean, comfortable, secluded in the woods and the neighborhood was very quiet. We loved listening to music while hanging out by the fireplace . The owner was very nice and easy to work with. He quickly responded to all questions. We would definitely love to stay here again!!!!
Four days and three nights at this beautiful property were not enough! The large deck overlooking the reservoir is exceptionally private and well-furnished. From the comfortable beds, to most refreshing bath showers, to discovering thoughtful amenities and treats in the kitchen and pantry, this getaway was among the best we’ve experienced in our travels. Plus, this very private cabin is just minutes from some of the best restaurants and fine dining one can find North Carolina. Truly a wonderful getaway that we hope to enjoy again in the near future!
The property was very beautiful and in close proximity to Ashville and various hiking trails. We particularly enjoyed the 2 hiking trails the owners created on the property.
The house was perfect. The deck was great to enjoy your morning coffee. We made it home by 4:30 most days for the beautiful sunset. It was a quick drive to downtown Asheville and Black Mountain had a lot to offer itself. The house had everything you would need if you forgot something as well. The fireplace was perfect for when the sun went down. Thank you for a great stay!
I booked our stay at White Oak Hideaway for myself, my husband and our son who lives in Charlotte. This was our first visit to Black Mountain and the Asheville area. Easy check-in/check-out with a lockbox/key. The house is lovely, nicely furnished, and comfortable in every way. We even got to use the gas log fireplace on a couple of chilly mornings. Mac is a wonderful host and provided friendly and prompt responses to our questions. Morning coffee and evening cocktails on the deck were great with a view of the reservoir and the beautiful autumn leaves. We ate lunch out and cooked our evening meals at the house, using the well-equipped kitchen and the gas grill on the deck. Nicely stocked pantry and fridge. All in all a very nice and enjoyable stay. Thank you so much, Mac!
Mac was a great host and very communicative. He was quick to answer any questions I had and left great instructions for everything at the property, which made finding things that much easier. The property was clean and beautiful, and the view was amazing, especially this time of year with all of the fall colors! Definitely recommended

we had a lovely time staying in this beautiful home. the kitchen was well stocked, the living room was cozy, and the bedrooms were comfortable. the views from the living room and deck were so gorgeous! we spent a lot of time in the living room with the fireplace going, just enjoying the scenery. the house is close to downtown black mountain which we very much enjoyed. would definitely stay here again.
Everything was great. Nice, quiet house as advertised. Close to Black Mtn and its amenities. Perfect for our weekend change of scenery.

About the host
Hosted by Mac McElheny
Margie is a retired children's books author and Mac is a retired geologist who now buys and sells antiques. We moved to Black Mountain in 2015 from Florida and absolutely love the area.
Why they chose this property
We live about 1.5 miles from White Oak Hideaway. The property became available 2 years ago and we could not resist the house, the location, and the water/mountain view. We also have a vacation rental on the property where we live which has been very successful. We have worked hard getting this one ready to rent.
What makes this property unique
The main feature of this house is the huge wraparound deck with beautiful views which change dramatically with each season. During inclement weather, one can retreat to the living room with it's wraparound windows and enjoy the same views. We also invite you to explore the two trails on the property which wind through mountain laurels, rhododendrons, and tall hardwood trees.
