About this property
Estado Luna Azul: Tranquil, Elevated Pool Estate Breathtaking Ocean/Sunset Views
Estado Luna Azul is a State of Mind. An elevated Status, a psycho-physio State of Tranquility. Sure, there's a house on top of a ridge that is a magnet for tropical breezes ... and the views drown your eyes in beauty while the sounds of nature lull you to sleep and wake you up. The smell of ocean mixed with tropical dry forest is intoxicating. Sun on your shoulders, soak in the pool, cooling breeze on wet skin, a hot outdoor shower poolside - These are the enticements of Estado Luna Azul. This state of being is not on a tourist beach, nor in an air conditioned hotel with crowds ... just you, the sea, the air, the sun. An entanglement with Guanacaste's nature that is as comfortable as it is energizing.
More than half of our guests are returns booking through several other means and often staying for extended periods. While Vrbo now excludes these from posting a review, we let our looong history of positive reviews speak for itself. This multi-acre estate is optimal for groups of up to six guests. It can stretch to accommodate groups of up to 10 at an additional cost of $20/person/night for groups larger than 6. 10 guests is an absolute maximum - the entire deposit will be retained and all services withdrawn if exceeding 10 persons. This because we like to keep the place nice! Decor and furnishings are family friendly. Luna Azul comes complete with a separately housed caretaker. Ask them about fresh fruit from the property, beach/panga fishing, massage, horseback riding … all arranged with ease while maximizing your beach, pool, and sunset time!
Our location makes this an adventure property. If you are not familiar with the term “bad roads bring good people”, you may want to book elsewhere. This is nature meets rustic comfort. We’ve worked to put our spaces as close to nature as possible without the trap of gazing from an air conditioned room. Yes, we get fewer bookings because we decline to install AC, but our long-term, return business and vast majority of positive reviews speak to the comfort of our ridge-line, tropical-breeze-swept, shaded-pool oasis with an unparalleled view. The long gravel driveway up to this perch requires rudimentary driving skills and 4WD traction. It’s possible with 2WD in dry season … but only with skill … and the surrounding gravel roads are pretty tough on low clearance vehicles.
The environment creates an opportunity to indulge across a full spectrum - from solitude to elegance to local nightlife at several bars in the area. Rather than retreat to air conditioned isolation, the house is designed for life 'in the breeze' - soaking in the rich tropical sights, sounds and smells inaccessible to those that decline to adjust to equatorial climates. That's not to say comfort is secondary! Shade, pools, warm outdoor showers, hammocks and fans are strategically maintained to encourage guests to constantly seek interaction with the unique experiences this insulated, elevated refuge presents: monkeys howling at sunrise, tree frogs singing at night, Mr. BIGuana standing watch from the Almendra tree poolside, birds playing in the trees in the late afternoon shade, raptors, vultures and storks seeking thermals coming up and banking against the updraft right in front of your nose as you relax in the pool ... ya can't get that stuff in a hotel room! We call it watching "Tico TV"!
There's plenty of space for two families with kids to enjoy lounging by the pool, swinging in hammocks, cooking, swimming, floating and relaxing on top of this comfortable, breeze-swept ridgeline ... away from it all but with assistance at the ready should you need it. A 'jungle' trail has been gently maintained on the property below the house for morning walks, wildlife viewing, and touring the dozens of different fruit trees on property - guided by onsite staff if desired! A favorite routine is to pack up coolers full of goodies and sand chairs, head to one of the local beaches for a morning surf/swim then return to the pool, shade and breeze for the afternoon. Simple, adventurous, satisfying.
If surfing is what you're looking for, look no further. Read the swell over coffee in the morning from this perfect vantage point. Many breaks in the area are yours to explore - alone! Just a beginner? Soft top surfboards and our recommended beach are a sure recipe for success. There's a wide range of beaches and headlands within a 30 minute drive on easy going country roads. There are left points, San Onofre style breaks, beach breaks and rock reef breaks easily accessible year round from a comfortable center point. Fantastic family surf adventures waiting for those ready to venture out. Playa Coyote has a gentle sloping, sheltered beach that is great for whitewash adventures and the inexperienced. Grab one of the soft-top surfboards at the house and get pics of the kids on their first stand-up! Playa San Miguel has a more challenging wave and great beach play family-style. This is our go-to beach for surf, coolers of beer, fresh fruit and lazy mornings in the shade of coco palms while the tide gets just right for a paddle out. Smaller surf is beginner friendly, sizeable combo swells and big tide changes can challenge any surfing level. Playa Camaronal is a fantastic "Old Man's" style break that can hold pretty good size. Limited shade and a heavily sloped beach make this primarily a surfer's beach. Playa Camaronal access requires no river crossings so it's ready to go even during wet season ... 20 minutes from the house. There are shade opportunities and a turtle sanctuary for those not surfing. Playa Corozalito has some tide sensitive breaks, shade and gentle slope with tide pools that are fun to explore - our Info Packet will tell you how to dial up a memorable family day at any beach.
Food!: The convenience of breakfast at your own pace and time is invaluable. The morning light playing on the estuary below is a constant distraction. Local groceries in Pueblo Nuevo, Bejuco, Corozalito, San Francisco de Coyote mean fresh produce and provisions for any level of culinary activity desired. Very convenient to stop and grab a cool drink and any items you need on the way home from the beaches. Don't feel like cooking? A wide range of dining experiences are available within 15 minutes from the house - breakfast lunch or dinner. Cooking services at the house, food delivery, tamale orders are all possible to arrange - but not guaranteed - during your stay or prior to arrival if desired.
Come enjoy 'El Campo' - the countryside - where Ticos come to relax during their holidays. You'll leave feeling refreshed and amazed at how immersion in local environment and culture can invigorate the soul!

About the host

We wanted to find a place where the surf was warm year round ... and crowds don't exist! We've enjoyed the experience of developing this property from scratch and have been up and running for more than 20 years. It's always been important to integrate with the local community and we expect that travelers seeking the adventure of this remote Tico countryside would seek to engage with local business, culture and environment as a part of their travel experience - just as we did more than 25 years ago. It's great to be involved with such a piece of rural tropical paradise ... but even more fulfilling to share it!
Why they chose this property
After many years of trips to surf with Tico friends, we decided to explore properties in the areas we enjoyed the most ... away from crowded line ups and heavy tourism. This area's gentle ranching culture, fabulous beaches, predictable surf and beautiful weather lured us. The view and steady breezes of this ridgetop location sealed the deal. While the offshores can be very strong, they are typically less in strength, duration and frequency than North Guanacaste. This area is a near perfect balance of light offshore flow, drier weather, lower insect load, water availability, minimal development but reliable infrastructure. Roads are well maintained, navigation, networks, communications, supply chain are all reasonably balanced given the remote location.
However, the ultimate draw and lasting benefit is the people. Ranchers, caballeros, fishermen, market/restaurant/bar owners/workers in the area are simply fantastic human beings. The house and view are beautiful - but get out and enjoy this tight knit ranching community ... you'll be glad you did.

What makes this property unique
Many feel they want to stay 'on the beach' when seeking tropical relaxation. We've found that the local beaches are best enjoyed mornings and evenings (especially at lower tides for loooong walks) with the ability to escape to our unique ridgetop siesta nest in the afternoon and for sunset. A refreshing beverage, a dip in the pool, rich mid day breezes and a siesta with exclusive privacy can make that evening walk on the beach before dinner even more enjoyable!!!
Are you a Raw Water fan? Attention to hydration is a must in the tropics. Tourism centers and beach front areas often lack access to clean, natural water sources. Our well is deep in a volcanic auquifer, pumped directly to the house and frequently tested for purity. Wait till you taste it - hydration is no longer a chore when the water tastes this good!
Fishing in the area either by beach, panga or sportfishing outfit is still extraordinary. Our caretaker is a fishing fanatic and can guide you to beach and panga opportunities with fever!
Drone cam exploration is phenomenal from this roost. Clear site lines to beach, estuary within a 1.5 kilometer range. No nearby airports or notifications required! Watch out for those storks. Send us your best drone footage marketing the house and its unique perch and we'll have tamales delivered to the house in gratitude. They are a very tasty treat on the plane ride home.
There's ALWAYS a rideable swell with the 8-9 foot tide changes. A new beach to explore every day. Mangrove estuaries to meet, headlands to scramble and cocos to sip from.
We dare you ... get off the bus, out of the hotel and FEEL Costa Rica in immersive style!
