About this property

River’s Edge secluded cottage

With absolute river frontage and located just 100 km from Melbourne CBD, this unique cottage is a perfect escape for a relaxing break, or a great base for exploring the Murrindindi Shire. Autumnal colours of the area are particularly spectacular. It is suitable for couples and older families, with 4 guests being the maximum. You will have a memorable stay without even leaving the property. Have some time out, just relax or read a book on the back deck, or sit on the bridge and watch the river activity.

Rivers Edge has two bedrooms (one queen and one with 2 single beds), one bathroom and a separate toilet. A large open living area allows for easy cooking and dining (or dine-out, as there are numerous venues close by in Buxton or Marysville). The wood-burning fire keeps the cottage cosy, but there is reverse cycle air con for instant temperature control, so you can watch TV or listen to music in comfort (Netflix, DVD, CD, WiFi available). The large back deck allows for relaxation and al fresco BBQ cooking and dining, all the while enjoying the surrounds.

Your bridge allows access to a small island where the river splits. Only the water on the cottage side of the island is accessible to guests. The far side of the island and the far bridge belong to neighbours and we ask that guests stay away from that area.

The cottage is separated from the main house by a high rustic fence and double carport, and both are still very private. However, guests may access the bridge at the main house after dark to watch the river activity, and maybe even spy a platypus. There are outside light switches (next to main house door) for river observation. Please ensure you vacate the main bridge area no later than an hour after dark to respect the owners privacy, and turn off any lights you may have turned on.

You are welcome to feed the fish at night from the main bridge, and feed the parrots during the day on the table near the river rather than on the porch. Please do not feed the cockatoos though (white birds), as they are very destructive.

There are many places to explore - Lake Mountain (32Km), Marysville (11 km), Taggerty (12Km), Alexandra (30Km), Eildon (37Km) and many other spots in the surrounding area.

*Walk or bike from the cottage and follow the trail along the river to the Meeting of the Waters. This is where three trout streams merge into one (Acheron, Steavenson and the Little Steavenson). Its only 400m away, and you can picnic, swim and fish here.
*If you continue up Church Lane to the Maroondah Highway, a right turn will take you past the local Buxton pub for drinks, dine in or take-away. Return home via Mareeba Avenue to complete a 3.5Km walk.
*The walking/biking path along the river in the other direction (towards Dyes Lane) takes you to the bridge over the Acheron River to the Buxton Mountain Bike Park (only 500m from Rivers Edge), and into the Black Ranges. It has a range of rides for different abilities and some are highly technical. Please note, the bike park is closed during winter.
*The Buxton Trout Farm is only 1 km away, and offers fishing and food experiences. You can select your own fresh and cleaned fish, and could BBQ it for tea at Rivers Edge.
*Otherwise, fish at the many other spots on the Taggerty, Acheron, Rubicon, Steavenson rivers.
*There are beautiful walks, bike trails and lookouts in Marysville. Dont miss the Steavenson Falls or the Keppel lookout. Great places to eat in Marysville too.
* The volcanic Cathedral Mountain Range (20Km) is spectacular, and there are amazing walks there (some challenging), and some lovely drives.
*Lake Mountain is great for both summer activities (walking and biking), and winter family fun tobogganing in the snow.

Please note that the pricing is for 2 people only, and any extra people will incur an extra cost per person, per night. Minimum of 2 night stay. Breakfast is not supplied. Linen, firewood are supplied.

Unfortunately we cannot allow children under 8 years old to stay, due to the close proximity of the water.

We really enjoyed our stay at Rivers Edge. The cottage was beautifully clean. Having my morning coffee on the little bridge and feeding the King Parrots was very uplifting. As for hosts, Jill and Murray were fantastic. I would definitely love to spend some more time there.

About the host

Originally from UK and New Zealand, Murray and I have relocated from Albany in WA in a quest to not only explore the East coast, but also provide a great experience for others at Rivers Edge. It is so rewarding when guests enjoy the experiences both at the cottage and the local tourist spots, and especially when they engage with nature.

Why they chose this property

Buxton is such a pretty and friendly village. It has a small population who enjoy a peaceful country life in the Central Highlands of Victoria. We both enjoy the natural surrounds of the area, so pretty in all seasons, with a lot of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and scenic viewing. There are also notable pubs, wine bars, and cafes within 15 mins drive of the cottage, and monthly weekend markets during summer in Marysville and Alexandra.

What makes this property unique

The birdlife is so prolific, you often see a range of species like king parrots, crimson rosellas, kookaburras, magpies, bowerbirds, at most times of the year, But we have on occasions seen a platypus too, which is so awesome, and is a reflection of the pristine environment around us. The Little Steavenson flows through the property, and there is bridge access to an island in your backyard, and with comfortable cottage living and outdoor dining it is a great space to enjoy.
