About this property
1922 rustic log cabin compound on Waiska Bay w/200 ft beach + 30 acres of trails
A rustic 1922 log cabin compound on Waiska Bay of Lake Superior lovingly cared for and upgraded by the same family for over 100 years. The Wigwam was built by an electrical engineer who worked at the Sault Locks from 1917-1954. At first it was just the main room, but in subsequent years the bedroom, kitchen, and front porch were added. A second cabin, the Little Papoose, was built in 1939 for his son's honeymoon, but it was not until the property passed to his grandson that a full bathroom and laundry were added as well as a second sleeper cabin, the Rainbow Lodge. As the fourth generation to care for this place and the land on which it sits, we hope that you will enjoy your stay here as much as we have enjoyed it over the years. The space is ideal for large families or corporate clients looking to place individuals in separate sleeping accommodations. The property will accommodate up to 13 people across the sleeping areas which include the main cabin with a master bedroom, sleeping loft, well-appointed kitchen kitchen (new stove and refrigerator 2026) and full bath plus laundry facility (new washer dryer 2022) as well as two additional sleeper cabins with attached full baths. All bathrooms have walk-in showers for accessibility, and the Rainbow lodge is ramped for wheel-chair accessibility. The property includes 200 feet of sand beach on Lake Superior and 30 wooded acres with trails across the road from the cabin for private hiking as well as a creek that runs past the cabin to the lake. The beach has fantastic sunset views, and the shallow bay warms up to very comfortable temperatures on hot summer days. Enjoy the company of humming birds, a wild turkey family (8 babies this year!) sea gulls, eagles, and other natural visitors. The cabin is just down the road from the town of Brimley as well as the Bay Mills casino and Wild Bluff golf course, about 20 minutes from Sault Ste Marie, an hour from St. Ignace boat docks for Mackinaw Island and an hour from Tahquamenon Falls. Other points of interest near by include Iroquois point and Whitefish Bay lighthouses, Brimley State Park, and National Forest areas. This is a fantastic base for a host of natural and historic adventures in the area, or just to laze on the beach, watch the distant freighters heading to and from the Lake to the locks, and grill with family and friends before roasting marshmallows over a fire on the beach. Let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep on sunny summer nights. Come in the fall for stunning views of fall colours. Sunsets are a must see and have long been a family tradition! We are happy to share recommendations for local excursions upon request. Long term rentals are available at a corporate rate that includes weekly light cleaning, fresh linens, and restocking of paper products and bathroom essentials. Please contact the host for more information.

About the host
Hosted by Cary Miller
I grew up in Wisconsin, but my mother's family was rooted in Michigan. Her grandfather, an electrical engineer for the Sault Locks, first purchased this property in 1922. It has been used and loved by generations of our extended family, and we are very pleased to be welcoming you to a place that holds so many joyful memories for us. You will see photos of the cabin's past on some of the walls in the main room showing my grandfather's prowess as a fisherman and my mother and uncle as children playing on the beach. We hope that you will also form wonderful family memories here that you will hold close to your heart for many years to come.
Why they chose this property
This property has been in the family for over 100 years, but I think I would love coming here even if it were not the place where our family is rooted. There are so many things to do within an hour of the cabin, although you may find it hard to tear yourselves away from the beautiful beach. We highly recommend Superior Pizza - actually one of my favourite places to order pizza from anywhere - and also really love Tahquamenon Falls. In Sault Ste Marie, we recommend Penny's Kitchen, Zorba's Greek American Restaurant, and Jose's Mexican Restaurant. Sault Ste Marie is the third oldest city east of the Mississipi River and there is a great deal of local history attractions here. If you are a golfer, there is mini-golf for the kids in Sault Ste Marie as well as a standard golf course, but a must-see is the Wild Bluff golf course just down the road at Bay Mills. Its views are so scenic that it is on the WPGA circuit. If you come in the fall, you will find the property ablaze with stunning fall colours and will enjoy walking the trails behind the cabin. Ripe wild blueberries can often be found at Iroquois point in late July and early August. If you come the first week of July, you can enjoy fireworks displays celebrating the two nations of Canada and the United States, as Canada Day is July 1 and of course Independence Day for the US is July 4. Both sides of Sault Ste Marie hold their fireworks displays over the locks. From our cabin, you can see the Bay Mills fireworks display on July 4 across the bay. But most of all, I think our cabin has the best view of the spectacular sunsets that visit the area. We have a family tradition of going down to the beach after dinner to enjoy them. We hope you do too.
What makes this property unique
This property is unique because it is a compound of three cabins: a central cabin and two outbuildings each with a queen bedroom and full bath. All buildings are a few steps from one another, and feature direct access to 200 feet of private sand beach waterfront on Waiska Bay of Lake Superior, and has 30 acres of wooded property with walking trails across the road from the cabin. It is also unique because the main building is over 100 years old, built in 1922, and lovingly taken care of and updated by our family over the years. And have I mentioned how breathtaking the sunsets are? My phone is full of sunset photos taken from the beach in the evenings,
