It was a very spacious house. The kitchen was well stocked with any kind of utensil. Or PAN or pots that she might need. Love the screen in back porch. The neighborhood was beautiful, close to a lot of things. The house was very dog friendly, but neighbors have dogs. So please be sure and keep your dog on a leash and don't let them go in the back because there's a lot of the little huckleberry, things that get stuck in their Fur and our dogs came back with tons of them, the weather didn't really cooperate with us being out. On the canoe, in the canal or anything The owner kept the pool in very good condition. Although again, the weather did not make it to where we could use it. The owner was very accommodating and very responsive. To any need that we had would suggest this for a family with pets anytime.
Our family loved this property! It felt secluded enough that we felt like we had a decent amount of privacy yet was close enough to Duck and Kitty Hawk to shop and eat! We LOVED the pool - a perfect way to cool down on a hot day! The pool table/ping pong table and board games were a perfect way to spend evenings. I cannot recommend this property enough and I truly hope we can stay next summer!
Beautiful place. Great views from porch in back. House was fully stocked with stuff from baby gates to stuff for the beach. We had a wonderful time. Kids loved the pool. Only down fall was the ticks but u are in a wooded area so that is to be expected. Had a water issue mid week however host was super kind and fast at getting it taken care and paid for our dinner that night out. Would definitely stay here again.
Second Nature is a well located, very nice cottage. Our time there was relaxing. The pool is very private and everything about the home met all our needs for a great vacation. My wife and I highly recommend a stay at Second Nature!
Everything was great for our trip to the OBX. The house was laid out perfectly for our group. And the kids loved the pool. Thanks for letting us stay for the week. Cheers.
Great location and amenities. House could use a little TLC with some simple things like cracked toilet seats, and loose pool table felt. Host was wonderful-available and attentive with questions and concerns. We enjoyed seeing the local wildlife near the canal every morning. Check in and out were super convenient.

Perfect Rental
This house has everything one could want in a rental - we loved our stay!!! Enjoyed the walks to the beach and sound, loved having kayaks. The nature surrounding this house is very peaceful and relaxing. The only downside was having to leave...
The house is at a great location, close to the beach and halfway between Duck and Kitty Hawk, so with great access to restaurants, shopping, and activities. The screened-in porch is also great. We were comfortable in the house, which was very quiet and peaceful—a relaxing getaway for our whole family and our dog. The owner was very responsive. One tip: bring your own paper products.
We really enjoyed staying here. The porch swing was a hit. My grandson loves fishing in the canal. It's the best of both worlds. Shade and sound in back and beach in front. It was nice being at the beach in the daytime and having the pool in the shade in the evening. The only negative thing is that there was poison ivy/oak around the house and pool and we did come home with some :(
Other than that we had a blast.

Very dated property that needs a lot of TLC.
This is more of cabin than a house. The location was right, but the house fell far short of expectations. A heavy mildew smell persists in the lowest level and under the kitchen sink. Dishwasher didn't work, but I brought my own dishwasher ;-)
A lot of the decking and stairways outside are rotted and need replacing and a coat of paint would really help. Door to the screen porch was broken, I sent a picture to the property manager on the first day with no reply.
The property manager did pick up the phone when I called at midnight of the 2nd day with water pouring from a lower level light fixture and ceiling. He said he was 73 miles away and to have the neighbor help to get the water turned off. The neighbor happened to have a special tool and had to turn the water off at the street. My kids did a great job of mopping water and emptying buckets. It's a night we will remember.
It was the end of the season so there were a lot of broken items and insulation hanging from the ceiling of the carport. Water toys were full of water and in disrepair with questionable life jackets. It seems there was a lack of pride of ownership/management. Carpets were filthy.
1 family vacation a year should be special, but this property needs about $50k to make it feel special again.
Owner left the pool open for the week for an extra fee. We only saw one other pool in the OBX that had been drained for the winter in the first week of October.
The screen porch is the best feature. Great place to chill.
Second Nature is a nature lover's dream. We saw deer eating berries around the property on the daily, as well as Osprey and other sea birds flying over. The house itself is amazing and is stocked fully for your every convenience. We enjoyed playing pool in the gameroom, but our favorite spot was definitely on the screened porch. Day or night. It's high vantage point made for amazing views and an inconspicuous way to watch the wildlife. The swing was amazingly relaxing. Also, being pet-friendly was amazing. We always travel with our 2 furry friends. The beach access is easy to reach at the end of the road, and is very private. The tennis courts are even closer. As we toured lighthouses both north at Currituck and south at Cape Hatteras, Second Nature was in the perfect location for us, close to in the middle!!Highly recommend, and we will be back.
We had a great time staying at Second Nature! We loved the nature feel of the property while being a mile from the beach. The house had everything we needed for beach trips, fun things to do, and to accommodate a toddler and baby.
Beautiful property in a nice neighborhood. House was very nice- fully stocked kitchen, nice bedrooms. The swinging bed on the porch was wonderful. The pool was nice and relaxing. Nice neighbors. The private beach access that comes with the neighborhood is very nice as well.
First and foremost, 2 of us were sick all week with a sore throat and stuffed up. Our last day we found black mold on the basement ceiling and in the skylight upstairs. They advertise kayaks and a telescope. Neither of which we could use. The owner basically told us too bad.Told the owner all the batteries for thw remotes were dead, never heard a response on that. Paid a fee for linens and got an email after everyone was already en route that towels werent included. So we had to go out and buy all new towels for everyone. Not to mention dish towels. Weeds over ran the place, and you had to check for ticks daily. Having said that, the house itself was very nice and the pool was great. Everyone had a great time, but we got the house to use the kayaks, and ended up spending more money to rent them. Wouldnt go back.
Being that it was late October and pretty much the end of the vacation season some of the issues we encountered were understandable. The property was easy to find. located a short drive to Duck and Kittyhawk. The neighborhood was very quiet. When we first entered, we noted a mix of musty/bleach odor and a few dead palmetto bugs on the floor. The rooms were decorated nicely. The beds were a little too soft for my liking and a bit worn in. There were plenty of blankets for the colder nights. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and was organized. The living room/dining room was very comfortable. We enjoyed the screened-in back porch and the oversized porch swing was awesome. The game room had a ping pong table/pool table that was in decent shape. We saw lots of deer and birds from the balcony. The observation deck did not provide views of the ocean. Best we saw was the tree tops across the street. A few of the family took the kayaks out into the canal. There is a very steep hill with awkward steps to traverse. The pool was half drained below the filter intake and we couldn't get the hose turned on to fill it so we didn't use it at all. The water was kinda greenish anyways. The beach access was a 17 minute walk so we usually drove. The neighborhood beach was very clean and easily accessible from the parking lot. We thought about staying and extra day and the owner was very responsive to our messages. In the end we decided to head home as scheduled. Not terrible for the $

Property would benefit from a better management
The house is in great location and it looks like it was once was in superb shape. These days there are many little things that need to be addressed. The owner is probably not visiting property as the needed repairs would be apparent for anyone who lives in the property for more that a day.
Also be prepared that you need to bring all the necessities: bath towels, beach towels, kitchen towels, kitchen cloths, paper towels, bathroom tissue, kleenex, dishwasher soap, hands soap, dishwasher detergent, rinse aide, GARBAGE BAGS. The house has no leftovers from the previous visitors like you'd use to expect. Don't even think of finding teas, coffees, sugars, oils, etc. You'd need to buy everything yourself. It seems like the management takes everything away.
Also, please read the fine print in the instructions that you'll see 3 days prior your visit. You'd need to bring your own sheets among other things.
Other included amenities like beach chairs, or pool table are in rough shape. One of the two beach umbrellas is broken, the other one is almost there as well.
We didn't even think of looking at the kayaks as life jackets were all piled up outside and did not look attractive.

The house was great.
The grass definitely needed cut. We couldn’t use the kayaks because the water was so low and the bugs were bad. Also, the walk down that steep hill was difficult for us old people.
We have a great time staying at Second Nature. We loved the pool table and kayaking on the canal behind the house. The house was perfect for our family of 8. We also loved the swimming pool and proximity to the beach. We would love to stay here again in the future if we can make our way back to the OBX.
We enjoyed trips to Wright Bros Memorial, Jockey's Ridge, Fishing and activities on Roanoke Island, visiting and climbing the lighthouses and hanging out at the beach.
It's a great place in a natural setting at the beach with a wilderness feel. The best of both worlds! The beach is a short drive down the road, but you can come back to trees, and shade, and listen to the birds and squirrels on the screened-in porch while relaxing on the bed swing, after spending the day at the beach.
The owner was very responsive, and the place had everything we needed. In 15 years of going to the Outer Banks, this is the best-equipped rental we have ever rented....hands down.
And it was a welcome treat to have a gas stove to cook on, so much better than electric, and plus, we didn't have that same old issue of reflective plates on an electric stove that the rental companies can never seem to get the right size of.
The weather was a bit unseasonably chilly our week so we never got in the pool, but it was in such a nice setting as well.
If you are looking for a place near the beach that doesn't have that same old sandy feel, where you can go to the beach and come back and relax in a nature-type setting, this is your place. I highly recommend it.

Quiet location with plenty of space.
I will start with positives. The location of the house is nice being that it is tucked back in and is quiet. The canal is behind the house and that offered chances to see birds and deer. There was plenty of sleeping space with 5 bedrooms and room for 10 people. My favorite part was the crow's nest (highest deck) and the screened in porch. I kept the screened porch open to the house often for the dogs to run in and out and to hear nature. There is pool but not useable in early October. The way the house was set-up, it was great for entertaining. I enjoyed the artsy, eclectic decorations. Anything you could have needed for cooking was supplied.
To the negatives, the dishwasher was broken and even when trying to organize the repair with the owner, the repair was never completed. Also, the tv sound in the living room did not work and a solution could not be found after multiple messages and a phone conversation with the owner. The same repairman who was supposed to do the dishwasher was also going to look at the tv, but he never showed. The house could definitely have been cleaner, and it is really could use some love with paint and other repairs such as rotting wood. The coffee pot was toast and should not be used. Also, the expensive linens fees DOES NOT include towels. The owner was kind enough to have towels delivered after I messaged him. Overall, it was a nice place to stay but I was disappointed by things not working as they should and as paid for.
Our stay was absolutely wonderful and relaxing! The community of Duck offers so much as far as shopping and dining. Second Nature was the best part! We spent so much time cooking and enjoying the homes other amenities: pool table, porch swings, grill, and swimming pool! The location to the beach access and parking was also a great addition; we took daily trips to the beach with our dog! We are excited to come back in the future!

About the host
Hosted by Dennis O'Brien
Myself, and my wife Carol have been visiting the Outer Banks since the late 1970s. We purchased Second Nature in 2003 and over the years have made many improvements. We fell in love with the setting as it gave us the best of 2 worlds with the beach on the east side and the marine forest, canal, and the Currituck Sound on the Westside. Its quiet, and at certain times feels like we are in a very remote location far from almost everything. Despite the remote feel we are only 5 to 10 minutes away from everything we need. There is something for everyone at Second Nature, making it an ideal rental cottage for families.
