The city of Durango and Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) in southwest Colorado is an area devoted to an active outdoor lifestyle. Nestled in the San Juan National Forest, this western town is where the high desert meets the high alpine.

Blackjack Lodge sits atop sloping cliffs overlooking Lake Purgatory, with sweeping views of the Hermosa Cliffs, Spud, Engineer and Needles Mountains from its large picture windows. Surrounded by groves of pine and aspen trees, it affords complete privacy, though conveniently located just one mile south of Durango Mountain Resort.

The large, open-plan family room has stunning views, a massive wood burning, sandstone fireplace and state-of-the-art entertainment complete with Sony 51' Surround Sound TV, DVD/CD, VCR and Stereo. A second family room (or the 'Bear Den') with 2-Twin Trundle Bed, TV, DVD, a regulation-size billiard table and also a ping-pong table is located in the basement, adjacent to the fourth bedroom which is outfitted with two sets of bunk beds and the location makes it an ideal room for the kids. All king and queen beds have Modal linens and goose down comforters to ensure a cozy and comfortable night's rest!

A wonderful bonus after a day of outdoor activities is the Hot Springs Spa 6 person hot tub on the covered deck. Luxuriate in its soothing warmth while taking in the stunning lake and mountain views and cool, clean mountain air. At night, the stars seem almost touchable.

Our home is that wonderful combination of rusticity and luxury. The bedrooms are comfortable and private and the family areas are well appointed with fine leather couches. Ceiling fans in every room and radiant-heated floors make it comfortable throughout the year. Our location offers you a choice between the dozens of activities available in the area, or complete seclusion - whichever kind of vacation you seek.

Beautiful home. Very private and peaceful! We really enjoyed our stay and will be staying here again! Plenty of room, fully stocked. Owners thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. Best part was sitting on the large back deck in the early morning hours, drinking hot tea and watching the humming birds.

Home with a view

Welcoming home with beautiful views of the lake, hot tub was great. Although there is access to the lake not all of our party could enjoy because it was a steep hike down. We all enjoyed the game room and there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out. Thank you for sharing your home.

Magnificent View

Place is in a beautiful spot to see the wonderful snow. Overlooking the mountains is spectacular. Lots of big bay windows to see everything. House was just the spot for our family. It is very close to the resort for skiing. There is a trailhead not for too. It is right in the middle between Durango and Silverton. I advise you if the roads permit to make a trip to Silverton and see the abundance of snow in the passes.

Such a beautiful and special property. Enjoyed spending our family trip here. It had plenty of space for our family of 10. Spacious & comfortable. Being from Denver, our family got to enjoy a different part, of our wonderful state.

Healing Journey

This home is just what my husband and I needed. We have just lost our son and didn’t have a plan but knew we needed to find somewhere to begin healing. The owner was extremely supportive and accommodating. House is perfect for families and friends. Would highly recommend.

A week in Colorado

Fantastic location for a relaxing week away. The home had everything we needed. Beds were great, couch was comfy and there was plenty to do indoors and out. Loved using the canoe on the lake, taking walks and relaxing in the hottub. Thanks for sharing your home!

Incredible week!

Pictures don’t do it justice, the views from the porch, living room, kitchen and master area are just magnificent. The living areas are oversized, and the open floor plan allowed plenty of room for us and the pups. We lucked out with our timing, the aspen leaves just started to turn yellow during our stay and with the close proximity to Purgatory and Silverton it allowed us fast access to the local mountains and trails compared to staying in Durango. I would definitely stay here again.

Snowy Wonderland

This was an amazing trip!! There was so much snow, but for this texas girl, it was like a winter wonderland. The house had everything. So spacious!! We could have had more family join us! Went skiiing one day and snowshoeing another. Rented from a shop just across the highway. We will definitely be back!!

Just Wow

This property was absolutely beautiful, big, and well stocked. Every window we looked out of had a stunning view. This was the last location we were visiting for our two week trip to celebrate our 5-year anniversary, and it could not have ended any better. We had the opportunity to hike San Juan National Forest with its beautiful colors and snow capped mountains. In this one visit we experienced fall one day and winter the next, where we had a good amount of snowfall that gave this place a different perspective of how gorgeous it gets. Our dogs absolutely loved it and we hope to come back with a longer stay. I cannot recommend this place enough!!

We Dreamt of a White Christmas in the Mountains

McGregor’s house was everything the listing portrays and more. We were snowed in part of the week so we really appreciated the very well stocked kitchen since all meals were prepared at home. Everyone took advantage of the hot tub after playing in the snow. The views from the main bedroom and bath are truly amazing. Waking up to the snow covered trees was magical. McGregor quickly responded over the holiday when we had a couple of inquiries. We highly recommend this house to anyone wanting to enjoy the Durango/ Purgatory area. We hope to be back in the summer.

Perfect property for 2 family mountain vacation!

This property had the most amazing view! Coffee on the deck in the morning over looking the mountains & lake was delightful. We stayed with our BFF’s family at this home. 5 teen boys who loved the downstairs to play pool & ping pong and big open upstairs to play games after long days outside mountain biking at Purgatory (5 min away), rafting in Durango and hiking also close by! This property had everything we needed! Extra bedding, towels, full kitchen and all the little extras like detergent, tin foil, etc….. the stuff you forget you’ll need when at the grocery store! The Nugget Bar across the highway looks like a dive, but it’s got great drinks & food truck food is great too! Pizza down the road at Old School house and country store for necessities. We loved the privacy of this home and would stay here again!

Beautiful home!

I spent New Years with my blended family of teens and young adults. This home was just perfect. We had a MASSIVE amount of snow during our stay. The owner checked in frequently by phone to make sure we weren’t having issues due to the weather. Great customer service! The road up to the house has one final turn that is could be a challenge for those uncomfortable on snow/ice. You definitely need a 4WD. The homeowner had a snowplow come through frequently which was helpful. The beds were super comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked and the views were just amazing. Highly recommend!

Thanksgiving Weekend

The location is very nice, but there are some serious draw backs. The water heater is way too small for a house that size and since it is heated by the floor heat you have to turn the temp in the house up to uncomfortable to get the water hot and then only one shower at a time (very poor set up). Two of the bedrooms are very small, beds are small and it's not clean. Over all it was a disappointment.

Our family stayed at BlackJack this summer (four adults, four children). The home was nicely furnished and very clean. A great place to hang out, with plenty of room and beautiful views. We enjoyed the lake view, and the boys enjoyed paddling the canoe. BlackJack is conveniently located to many activities. Tabegache Hiking trails are within walking distance of the home and Hermosa Creek trail is wonderful. The hot tub was in high demand after hiking and mountain biking. Also recommend visiting nearby Mesa Verde, and riding the Durango/Silverton train, and if you are really adventurous, drive the white knuckle Alpine Loop from Ouray to Lake City and back. Only about an hour drive from BlackJack to the trailhead. Really recommend the Dalton Ranch golf course about twenty minutes down the road. BlackJack lodge is a unique combination of a remote mountain retreat and a host of readily accessible activities to please about everyone. You'll love the beautiful views and the clean and well furnished BlackJack lodge.

Beautiful, Snowy escape to Purgatory Lake

As always, we had an amazing stay. This is our third year coming here and hope to continue coming back each year. The views are stunning. This year, we came in during a snow storm so we saw much more snow than in previous years. We had previously driven my CX-9 and put snow chains on to get up the mountain but there’s no way we would have made it up this year if we were in my car. Thankfully my husband bought a truck so it was much, much easier getting up the roads to the house in his 4WD. If you have kids, the whole bottom level of the house is pretty much theirs so that’s a huge plus for them. They have a TV to play games on, ping pong table, bunk beds and bathroom with a shower. They had a blast going down some hills around the house with the snow sleds provided. We had some questions for the owner regarding the house and he was very helpful and quick to respond. We would love to continue coming back each year!

Needs some deep cleaning & updated description.

First off, the property has a stunning view and location. However, beds don't match description. We planned on two queen beds for our party, however, they were full size beds. Also, it is NOT an 11 min walk to Purgatory and you must have 4WD in winter, which is not mentioned in description.This home did not feel clean. One of the beds (upstairs full) did not smell like the blankets were clean. The floor of that room also had debris and had not been vacuumed. All pillows were mismatched, old and stained. Same w/bathroom rugs. There were very large cobwebs that no one cleaned up in the living room w/dead spider. There were little kid hand prints on the large window, kitchen cabinets dirty. The hot tub smelled like mildew, unsure if chemicals had been added prior to our stay, or if this is from the cover.Overall, we were very disappointed and uncomfortable with the cleanliness. We all also felt this home is in much need of updating and deep cleaning. Owner was receptive to notification of these issues.

To indicate either a POSITIVE or negative comment/category, does NOT do this home justice. This mountain property truely rates a WOW! From the hot tub on the back deck, overlooking the lake, to the mkountain views and exceptional comfort of the furnishings, you will be bathed in comfort. Your secluded retreat offers you extreme privacy, yet is located within minutes of ANY activity you desire. We loved being within a mile of the ski resort, and the quaint towns along 550. The drive north along 550 is nothing but breahtaking. We strongly encourage you take the train from Rockwood to Silverton. Also try the glider rides and jewerly shopping. The humming birds on the back deck lends to the overall atmosphere and your relaxation. Summer was a great time to visit, we went for a week, and still needed more time to explore. We are going back this winter to experience the snow views of the mountains and scenary! Lastly, your hosts, the CONVERSE's are unparrelled, who truely care that you have a superior experience, and should you need ANYTHING, they are only a phone call away. Great for local dining and travel recommendations. Enjoy!!!!!!!

Sleepless at Purgatory Lake

There were 10 of us staying for 5 nights. Upon our arrival we found mouse droppings on 3 beds, (pillowcases, bedspreads, around mattresses). Mice droppings on carpet on stairs and throughout house. Dead mouse in trap under the stove. The residence is old and needs to be freshened up. Pool table great, ping pong table uneven and paddles were useless. Stove, dishwasher, cabinets. flooring all old. Walk to lake is a trek, not an easy walk. Lake is beautiful and we had a great time around the fire pit. We contacted owner about mice and housekeeping came and vacuumed and brought one mouse trap. She did nothing about the beds with mice droppings. Four out of the 10 slept on the couches. We were disappointed in the residence and the property is just so-so.

Heaven on Earth

The pictures do not do this properly justice! We had the most fantastic week here! The house comes very well equipped with all the little things you’d typically forget to take on vacation. Your heart will ache when it’s time to leave this piece of heaven on earth!

Skiing Nirvana

Purgatory was great for skiing and this place was optimal for access and recovery after a long day at the slopes. My buddies and I were able to stay in each night and hang out like the old days. Property is big and spacious. Hot tub was awesome!
