About this property
Secluded beachfront home on Harstine Island
You'll love our recently renovated beach house on Harstine Island's southern tip. Take in stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, Squaxin Island and Peale Passage from the huge deck and the rock, gravel and sand beach. Wander and explore the expansive tidelands. Comb the endless beach for sand dollars, sea shells, driftwood and other treasures while enjoying the solitude of one of Puget Sound's undiscovered gems. Bring your boat or use one of ours. Swim, fish and crab in the clean waters of Puget Sound.
Most of the beaches on Harstine Island are privately owned, including all of the beaches you can access by walking from the house. All of the owners allow people to walk along their beaches, but gathering shellfish (clams, oysters and geoduck) by our guests is prohibited on these private beaches. Property owners are very concerned about people taking shellfish from their beaches, so I ask that you please respect their property.
The beach in front of my property has been over-harvested of its shellfish, so to allow nature to recover we are asking guests to only gather shellfish on the public beaches on the island. There is more information below on the public beaches and in the guidebooks at the house.
My bulkhead, made of large concrete blocks, is 100 feet long, and covers the width of my property. My beach goes all the way out to the lowest low tide point. You are free to walk on any part of my beach and neighboring beaches, north or south, but please DO NOT gather shellfish from the beach directly in front of the house or from neighboring beaches.
If you are planning to gather shellfish, you can drive to several public beaches on the island. One is Harstine Island State Park, which requires a short hike to the beach (DNR-24 beach) and is open to the public for clams and oysters all year. You can walk south on this beach for about a mile and you'll reach McMicken Island State Park, where there is also great shell fishing. Plan to be there at low tide for the best shell fishing. Here is the web address for more information about these beaches: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish/beaches/280820/
The gravel driveway leading to the house is steep in places and can be a challenge for some vehicles. If you own an all-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive vehicle, drive that if possible. On the way down the driveway be sure to turn right at the white arrow and park where the driveway becomes level. On the way up the driveway use your vehicle’s lowest gear (or 4WD). Stay to the right for better traction. Maintain a constant speed and avoid stopping and starting. Do not spin your tires. If you lose traction, back down and start again.

Beautiful views. Very comfortable, well-appointed rental. Pet friendly. We'll be back - THANK YOU for allowing us to make memories at the beach. Easter 2026
This setting is the perfect spot to watch Eagles swoop down from the forest to pluck lunch from the water. The cloud watching opportunities do not disappoint, and the sun breaks and clear skies are equally as promising! If you need good sleep, this place is for you - the location is so quiet and peaceful. The kitchen is well stocked with spices, pots/pans and any cooking utensils you need, so you will feel right at home making a favorite meal. It's a lovely clean place to stay!
Another great stay at a beautiful property. It is perfect accommodation for all of our family members aged 8-65 and especially the dog! No one gets board, enough room for everyone to have their own space and it has conveniences of home for all to enjoy inside and outside. Looking forward to coming back next year.
We love all the special touches the owners have made. It's very clean and organized with all the amenities you could need. The cast iron is even well seasoned! We loved our time here and hope to return.
We stayed to celebrate my mom's birthday, and are SO glad we chose this property! The details are so thoughtful, and every need was taken care of. Just like our own home but in a stunning location. We loved kayaking, the sauna, everything! We will definitely be back!
The house was lovely and very clean, and the view was spectacular! We cooked and found everything in the kitchen needed to prepare our meals. The sauna was very relaxing at the end of busy day. Great vacation rental!
Was great staying here. Love this place. The kids always enjoy it here. I wish we were able to get some oysters but I totally understand why we couldn’t. No complaints, another year a success!
The cabin was very private, extremely comfortable and had the most beautiful views from almost any vantage point. I highly recommend this location to anyone who is interested, it will provide you with some fantastic experiences and memories if you do.
I can not say enough about our stay! It was amazing. The location was secluded and allowed our family to enjoy a piece of nature. The kitchen was the best stocked i have seen. The whole house was clean and just as advertised.
Everything about the property was great–including the weather! We were able to enjoy most of the amenities, from sauna and kayaking, to fire pit and horseshoes. Beautiful scenery, views changing with the tide. The description is accurate–we had all we needed and more. This is a lovely place to get away!
We loved the sound of the waves and the barks of the sea lions. This place has everything you need to explore the sound and recharge in comfort. We'll be back.
Great stay, we liked the new remodel on the cabin.
Some replacement action needed; replace the BBQ, it does not heat up proper. The Sauna does not work proper.
Overall it was a great place to stay.

About the host
Hosted by Steven Johnson
I live in Seattle with my wife, Kristin and have for over 30 years. I grew up not far from the beach house in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1983. I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington in 1983 but found that I missed the water, mountains and forests of Mason County. Having a small house on salt water had been my dream for many years, a place to bring my kids, my friends and extended family to get away from the city. My dream came true in 2008 while living overseas with my family in Italy.
With the help of my father who had a career in the local real estate industry he located this property and called me in Italy to tell me he found a property that met all of our criteria: clean beach, view of the mountains and at least an acre of property with big trees. My dad sent me photos of the property via email and after a few frantic late night phone calls I gave him my permission to make an offer on the property. The next day I received a phone call that the offer had been accepted! It would be 8 months until I would set foot on the property with my family after moving back to the USA.
It was a nerve-wracking drive from Seattle, wondering what we had just invested our life savings on, but when we turned into the driveway for the first time, words could not describe the joy and surprise we all felt. The house immediately felt like home.
Why they chose this property
The property has a perfect blend of amazing water and mountain views, surrounded by large Douglas fir, cedar and Madrona trees, animals of the forest, sea and air, all in a very rural setting with occasional waves from neighbors while walking on the quiet rural roads.
The beach is just steps away from the house and is very inviting for long walks, beach combing or just listening to the sounds of nature. You have a front row seat in the cozy living room for storms rolling in from the southwest and on sunny days, the west facing deck is great for relaxing with friends and family and watching stunning sunsets.
What makes this property unique
You will hear no traffic noise other than the occasional fishing boat, and the lack of city lights make the stars pop on clear nights.
