About this property

Spacious room in ca. 1830 home

The Pembroke Room is in the oldest portion of the Holladay House, built around 1830. With its location in downtown Orange, wineries, historic homes, battlefield parks, Charlottesville, and much more are all short drives from the house.

The Pembroke is one of four guest rooms on the second floor and one of only two in the original, 1830's portion of the house. Because of its location in the pre-plumbing part of the house, the Pembroke's bathroom is located in the hall outside the bedroom door; two bathrobes are provided to Pembroke guests for that three-step trip :-).

On the first floor are the common-use parlor, study, and dining room (as well as the hosts' quarters); two guest rooms are located on the basement/parking entrance level.

Members of different First Families of Virginia have lived in or visited the Holladay House during its ~200-year existence, including Madisons, Pages, and Taliafferos. JEB Stuart attended a wedding reception here when Lee's army spent the winter of 1863-64 in Orange.

Convenient Orange location
I have previously stayed at this location when it was operated as a bed and breakfast, this time it is only a lodging spot with complimentary drinks which was conveyed in the listing. The home is lovely and easily located in Orange, with quick access to many historical areas. While the Fenton is listed as having a bathroom, which it does, it is a tiny water closet at best. There is no standard size mirror or sink, the shower is also quite small. Overall, our stay was fine, but I did not like the ridiculously small bathroom.

Wonderful Stay in the Fenton Room
Pat & Monica made the check in process seamless. The room was so charming with everything we needed to enjoy our time in Orange. The Thornhill home was marvelous as a whole, as well.

About the host

Hosted by Patrick McAloon

Host profile image
Monica and Pat aren't crazy about flying but love to travel: we visit Europe whenever we can and enjoy eating our way through work trips to China and Vietnam. We grew up in China and Fairfax County, Virginia, respectively, lived in Columbus, Ohio for 20 years, and are now happy to call Orange, Virginia home.

Why they chose this property

We moved to the Holladay House because we were looking for a home close to the universities of Virginia - we provide educational experiences in the US for Asian students - and close to Pat's family in Northern Virginia. Living in a house this old is a new experience for both of us, but we find it to be very rewarding.

What makes this property unique

Things that make this house special include:
* The home's fascinating history and the cast of characters that have come through it
* Being right on Main St. in Orange, walking distance to cool shops and good food
* The convenience of town living (city water!) while being minutes from the beautiful countryside.
