Hill East is a great residential neighborhood adjacent to Capitol Hill. It is primarily residential, but just far enough from downtown that there is space for plenty of services, including full-sized supermarkets, parks, and playgrounds. It is very walkable and sufficiently close to everything that you won’t feel too far out in the suburbs. Eastern Market and Lincoln Park are conveniently located for your children to play, or to get some people-watching in.
While there are some friendly neighborhood bars and restaurants in Hill East, you’ll find many more options right in Capitol Hill on 8th Street, or the nearby lively H Street Corridor. You can quickly get to those parts of town if you want; it is a longish walk, or you can simply take the Metro that is only two blocks away. Parking is usually easy to come by. If you're looking for my personal recommendations of places to go or things to see, please ask me!
Perhaps the biggest advantage of Hill East (sometimes also called Barney Circle) is the strong sense of community. It is the sort of place where residents know each other by name, and help one another with yard work.

2 blocks from the metro, which was awesome. Would be great for a family with toddlers. The full kitchen and laundry were perfect for our stay.

We're delighted you enjoyed the convenient location and found the kitchen and laundry helpful for your stay. We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you and your family back soon!
We're thrilled you enjoyed the perfect location and found the house great. Your feedback means a lot to us, and we can't wait to welcome you back for another wonderful stay!
This was such a wonderful place to stay! The owner was very friendly and easy to communicate with and the home was comfortable with everything we needed! The metro station being within walking distance was such a plus. We loved it and will be staying here again next time we visit DC!
Our family of 5 ranging from 2 to 42 stayed here and it was perfect for us. Close to Metro and bike share station, walking distance to grocery, lots of windows with it being at the end! A dedicated parking spot, big yard, kids toys and books...it really was a perfect spot!
Enjoyed the comfort of home. Only issue was the infant gate at top of stairs, however I understand if there are toddlers. Love the area- close to Meteo.
My husband and I loved the location, and the home. It is safe, very welcoming and my favorite part was the back yard with the covered back porch.
The location is an 8 minute walk to the metro and the hosts are so easy to work with.
The next time we are in DC we will stay here again.
This was a lovely home to come back to after a long day of sightseeing! It was pretty easy to get to all the monuments, Capital, etc. We rented a car and having the space to park was awesome! The treads on stairs were pretty high but it really worked our thighs! Very clean and everything you need is there! Would definately recommend!
This is the second time we have stayed in this property and it's just perfect for us. It's very convenient to the metro as well as restaurants and parks. Also very well set up up for families with toys and books for the kids and plenty of space for everyone. We have family in DC and plan to stay here every time we come to visit. It fits our needs perfectly.
Great place to stay in Capitol Hill with kids. Lots of toys and a sizable backyard. About a 10 minute walk to the Metro. Easy check in and check out. Also easy parking once you find the alley off of A Street. If you come at night, look for the fence/gate for the parking space has the address on there.
What a wonderful HOMEbase from which to explore DC. I emphasize home because it is truly a home with a private backyard, comfortable sleeping for 3 friends or a family with kids, walking distance(2-4 blocks) to restaurants and shops and the metro, and only 15-20 mins to the mall! What more could you ask for?
our only complaints with the house were in the kitchen- there was only one dish towel and very small roll of paper towels- needed more towels for the kitchen in order to do dishes, clean up etc. The other issue was coffee maker needed replacement. We had to mess with it to get it to brew correctly due to the spring old and worn out. Otherwise, wonderful home! Great host
This property was great for us. Communication with the owner is very professional and quick to respond. The home was very clean and had everything we needed for our stay and more. There’s a secure parking spot for one car behind the house and it’s off the street, we really appreciated that. There’s also a small porch seating area and we enjoyed sitting there in the evening to relax and plan our next day. Getting to the US Capital and Mall area was about a 35 minute walk for us, and we always felt safe walking there and back. There’s a bus called the Circulator that makes and stop at 19th St and East Capital St that will only cost you $1 to ride. If your comfortable navigating the Metro, that’s only a few blocks away too. This property was perfect for us.
My husband and I along with our two teenagers stayed here for 4 nights at the end of a two week East Coast vacation and it was a fantastic way to end our trip. It was so nice to stay in a place with three bedrooms and I particularly loved having a king bed again. It was also nice having one and a half baths to use too!
The kitchen has all the dishes and utensils to cook with but there wasn't much communal food there, such as spray oil or anything. Just a heads up that you will need to buy all your ingredients. Trader Joe's is super close and has an underground garage that validates.
Speaking of close, the Metro was super convenient and I loved being able to hop on any of the trains to get to the downtown. Going to all the different Smithsonian Museums, the various monuments and the three branches of our government was super interesting.
A little warning about this place. The stairs to the second floor are steep so if you have limited mobility or stairs are an issue you should take that under consideration. It wasn't an issue for us but I do know some people these stairs would be difficult.
I would absolutely stay here again!
We stayed with four of our kids, ages ranging from 12-21. We had plenty of room for six of us and the place was exactly as described. We did a lot of walking and we felt safe in the neighborhood. The place was clean and the paper products were there as described. Shower was nice, good pressure, everything was great. We had no complaints at all, but just few things to note: As mentioned in the other reviews, the steps to the upstairs area are really steep, just be advised for young children, and older or disabled individuals. We were a little confused as to how it sleeps six with what we saw in the pictures. Our kids didn't want to sleep together, so we put one on the couch downstairs, two were in separate bedrooms upstairs (the room with the crib also has a twin size bed not shown in their pic). And our youngest slept on an inflatable mattress that was provided for us. Hubby and I slept in the main bedroom, which was big enough to place the inflatable at the foot of the bed after we rearranged the furniture a little. Also, the parking space accommodated our 2020 Pathfinder juuuuuuuuust barely, but it worked perfectly for us. If your vehicle is big it may not fit. All in all it was a wonderful stay, we would definitely stay here again and highly recommend the property!
The location was very well described, about a block and half to the Metro station, which was very convenient. The parking area inside the backyard was very helpful, as the street in front of the house was always full. The drying racks for clothing were greatly appreciated, as we have several pieces of clothing that can't be dried! We were disappointed in the quality of the furniture and linens. The master bed was very soft and uncomfortable with a big dip in the middle, and the "bed spread" looked to be about 20 years old. The living room furniture wasn't very comfortable either, which was a bummer for us. After spending the days walking around DC, it was disappointing to not have a comfy couch to lounge on in the evenings. There were no extra towels, just the bare minimum for what we needed. It would have been nice to have an extra bath towel and a couple kitchen towels. Lastly, there were only 4 adult forks. There were 5 of us, so we couldn't even eat one meal with everyone using forks. There were no dish washer tablets or detergent, so we had to hand wash all of our dishes. Overall, the house was good, it was just the comforts that were missing to make it a great place.
