About this property
For Beach Connoisseurs: Classic Beachfront Cottage!
Our classic (newly renovated - please see pics) beachfront cottage features a private path to the beach and a private dune deck right at the beach and is a block away from any public walks so the beach seems a little more private. My grandmother convinced my father to buy the house in 1964 from an old girlfriend who was trying to raise money to get her manuscripts published. The "ex"? She wrote the NY Times bestseller "Charleston" and went on to be selected by Margaret Mitchell's heirs to write the sequel to "Gone With the Wind"! We have pictures of the house and beach at different periods of our family's involvement. Everyone who enters breathes a sigh of relaxation because of the beautiful views and open layout that invites the constant breeze and sea air. We have retained all of the charming and necessary features for full beach enjoyment such as a large screened-in porch looking out over the ocean and the Charleston shipping channel with a comfortable sofa and chairs, a porch dining table with six chairs and room for more, and a hard to resist hammock. In addition, we have provided modern amenities such as Keurig coffee/cocoa/tea maker, wireless internet, Dish Satellite and Flat screen TVs. There is an additional television with DVD player in the downstairs teen hangout room. Of course there is central heating and air if there is not enough sea breeze to open up the two sets of new French doors and keep the house cool.
Our favorite spots are the Pawley's Island Hammock on the full-house, screened-in porch (which we call the "front") facing the beach, the lounge chairs on the deck that face the beach, and the dune deck that allows you to perch above the rest of the beach goers and watch the surfers and ships. The full kitchen with new gas stove and powerful hood, and dining room make it so you never have to leave this great spot to eat. However, there are fabulous restaurants on the Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island in addition to the many in Charleston. It is a five-minute drive to Target and Towne Center, where there are boutiques, a movie theater, a Lowes, and a department store. There are dozens of highly rated golf courses within a 20-mile radius. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans, blinds, functioning windows and screens to allow for the refreshing sea breeze. The HVAC system is new. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, charming tile bathroom with shower, two closets, and TV (w/ Roku). The other two bedrooms on the main floor, twin and queen, have built-in dressers and full closets, and share a newly-renovated bathroom with shower and tub and brand new dual sinks and vanities and a back-lit 48 in. frameless fashion mirror. The first floor bedroom has twin beds, its own bathroom, and two showers adjacent to it. Downstairs is another den with TV and a futon/bunk bed perfect hang out for teens!

About the host
Hosted by Devon Hanahan

This is a family house. We enjoy it with children and cousins of multiple ages, and there is something for everyone. We live in Charleston and use the house when we can, so it is kept in prime condition and we have rented the house for more than 30 years, so we know what needs to be done to create a positive, comfortable experience for renters. We are in the process of passing the house to our sons for estate planning purposes to continue the tradition, thereby preserving the house for the family for a third generation, and more, we hope! No pets allowed. We love ours, too, but don't allow them in that house.
Why they chose this property
Central location, private path and dune deck (sunrise and sunset!), classic family front beach cottage, location on the beach - great beach for children and all ages, close proximity to Charleston. The Isle of Palms is a safe, welcoming, and supportive community. You can walk to the grocery store, post office, restaurants, ice cream, fresh seafood store and - the Windjammer complete with beach volleyball courts and beach stage! The playground is in walking distance and has tennis courts, a basketball court, gym, soccer, football, and baseball fields and coming soon - pickleball courts! The public park with lifeguards is within sight of our house.
What makes this property unique
We are located in between two of the public access paths, so we are away from the crowds! This is the best surfing area on the beach- the best break is just the to the left of our dune path, which you can see from our porch. We have a full beach and do not experience erosion problems and seldom have any real current since we are in the middle of the island. We love to look for loggerhead turtle nests and have witnessed both the laying and hatching of eggs and do a lot of running and biking on the beach and on the bike path on the marsh side of the island. All of our friends (even the ones who live here on the Island!) love to come to this house to go to the beach!
